On deck, the evening breeze stirred gently as the cruise ship began its leisurely journey. Sophie's phone buzzed and a video call from Damon appeared on the screen.
"Mommy!" Damon's voice echoed through.
Hey, baby, what's up?"
I'm at Jake and Anabel's," Damon replied.
The ambient noise from the deck of the ship made it difficult for Sophie to hear her children clearly.
"Baby, wait a minute. Mommy will find a quieter place to chat."
Sophie remembered that there was a lounge on the upper deck. Deciding to go there to continue the conversation, she called for a waiter to take her up.
Being Hurley's date had its advantages; the lounges were on the exclusive top floor. With only a handful of rooms and a quiet adjacent garden, it was the perfect quiet retreat.
"Thank you," Sophie said as the waiter escorted her to the lounge. He left quickly to attend to his other duties.
Sophie was about to continue her conversation with her son, but before she could, she heard a loud "thud" in the nearby garden, as if something had fallen.
Alarmed, she rushed over to find a woman lying on the ground, clutching her chest.
The woman appeared to be in her forties or fifties, elegantly dressed with impeccable makeup. She exuded an air of sophistication and a sense of prominence.
But the situation now demands urgency. Regardless of the woman's status, Sophie knew she couldn't stand by and do nothing.
"Hello, are you still awake, ma'am? Can you hear me?" Sophie tried to wake her.
The woman didn't answer and seemed to have slipped into a deep unconsciousness. Sophie began to check her temperature, which seemed normal. She then quickly checked her pulse and found that she had none. It was obvious that her heart had stopped.
Sophie quickly placed his hands under her sternum, then overlapped his hands and began compressions to perform CPR on her.
"Madam, Madam! Stay with me!" Sophie begged Sophie, her hands moving rapidly.
Sophie's hand movements did not stop and the frequency of her compressions was very fast. She would have to be able to do this at least a hundred times a minute in order to generate enough artificial circulation to supply blood to the various organs and tissues throughout the body.
Kneeling beside the woman, Sophie continued her efforts, but there was still no sign of recovery.
In general, if a cardiac arrest lasts more than five minutes, it is difficult to rescue, but now it is almost five minutes.
But Sophie did not give up. Time was of the essence. She continued to perform CPR on the unconscious woman.
Finally, after what seemed like an agonizingly long time, the woman's heartbeat began to flicker back to life, albeit a faint one.
A wave of relief washed over Sophie. Thankfully, the woman's life was no longer hanging by a thread.
"Madam, can you hear my voice?" Sophie continued to call, her voice steady as she whispered into the woman's ear.
The situation was critical. They needed to get the woman to a hospital, but with the cruise ship already underway, Sophie's legs felt numb, almost buckling from the pain.
But she didn't care at the moment. Sophie helped the woman to a nearby chair and quickly called for help.
As soon as Sophie left, another person came up the stairs.
"Ms. Michaels, please come this way. Madam is in the room."
"Thank you," Maya replied with a slight smile and waited as the servant opened the door.
"Why isn't madam here? She was just in the room. She said she wasn't feeling well and was resting," the servant remarked, growing increasingly anxious as she scanned the empty room.
"It's okay, I'll call my aunt." Maya hastily dialed the number but noticed that the ringing seemed to be coming from the adjacent garden.
Hurrying over, Maya found Mrs. Harrington sitting in the chair.
"Aunt! Auntie!" Maya's voice quivered with urgency. "Someone, come quickly!"
Hearing the commotion, the servant hurried over. "Madam!"
"In this situation, help me get Auntie back into the room and have her lie down. I have some medical training; let me administer first aid," Maya instructed, taking charge of the critical situation.
