"I've never had this kind of talk with anyone, Sophie. What kind of person do you think I am that I can marry anyone I want?"
Sophie found herself looking into Hurley's fierce eyes, his gaze seemed to scorch her very soul.
Sophie turned her head to the side. "I have no idea, and I have no idea who you are."
"Then would you like to get to know me better if you had the chance?"
Hurley's words were already very obvious, but Sophie had no idea what her reaction should be.
Sophie was taken aback. "Is it just me, or could it be anyone at all?"
"Just you," Hurley assured her. Only Sophie has such a chance.
His sincerity was palpable, more intense than anything Sophie had ever seen from him before. It was almost as if he really cared about her.
Sophie had wanted to get back at Hurley before, but she had never thought about it. If she had the chance to make Hurley fall in love with her, she would hurt him badly and make him feel the heartbreaking pain.
But Sophie didn't have the guts to do that for fear that she would be the one who was hurt instead.
Sophie didn't know whether to believe what Hurley was trying to say. She opened her mouth to speak and found that her voice was caught in her throat.
Hurley was in no hurry and waited for her answer.
At that moment, a knock on the door of the room broke the suffocating atmosphere.
Relieved to be out of the situation, Sophie opened the door. A waiter from the cruise ship was standing on the other side of the door.
"Mr. Walton, Ms. Hades, the banquet is about to begin. Mr. Harrington asked me to invite you down," the waiter said.
"Let's go," Sophie followed the waiter without hesitation.
Hurley also followed and did not mention the matter again.
The banquet dragged on with boring speeches. To relieve her boredom, Sophie sipped her wine. Unexpectedly, Maya approached her.
"It's been a long time, Sophie." Maya greeted.
Sophie looked at her calmly, not believing that Maya had actually dared to come over.
"Isn't this the night? I didn't expect the 'wonder doctor' to recognize me."
Maya's expression changed. "What are you getting at?"
"It's not interesting, but I'm just curious. When did you become Night? And why wasn't I informed?"
"Since when do you care so much about me that you even want to know about me? I just like to keep a low profile and I don't want the others to know about my identity." Maya replied, her smile suggesting otherwise.
Though she didn't confirm it outright, Maya's smile hinted at a truth that she didn't deny.
She wasn't capable of a happy smile because she had never been better than Sophie as a child.
And now, relying on Night's name, she could definitely compare with Sophie.
Sophie just smiled. Unexpectedly, after so many years, Maya had not only not progressed, but had also become thicker-skinned.
She has no patience for people who use other people's names.
Sophie smiled back. "You should know best whether you're Night or not."
"Why do you insist that I'm not? If I'm not, then why are you?" Maya's frustration was obvious.
Because Sophie really is Night!
But Sophie has no intention of revealing her identity to anyone just yet. "Of course, I'm not. But I don't think you are, either."
"Oh, there's no need for me to prove it to you, I just don't see why I should do that. Sophie, you clearly know that my sister likes Adrian, and you still dared to go out with him, so Adrian was cheating on her. Then you hooked up with Mr. Walton and you looked down on him and you ruined his family and you left my sister in a devastated state. Do you really have a conscience, Sophie?"
"Do you have any proof that it was me? Or are you spreading unfounded rumors again? I see that you're very, very close to the Harrington family. With your flawless relationship with them, one might even wonder if you ever got into Mr. Harrington's bed!"
"You!" Maya's eyes flashed with a mixture of anger and guilt.
