Hurley got off work at the usual time today, and as soon as he got off, he went straight to his grandmother's house.
He knew that Sophie would be there as well.
After saying goodbye to Sophie last night, Hurley was so excited that he almost didn't sleep all night. After lying down for an hour, he just got up at five-thirty and went to work.
He caught up on the previous day's unfinished business, attended a morning meeting, and managed to finish the day's work before leaving.
"You see? I was right about you, you workaholic! How long has it been since you visited Grandma?" the old lady scolded lovingly.
"I'm sorry, Grandma. I've been a bit under the weather lately, but I promise I'll bring the kids to visit more often," Hurley replied.
"All right, all right. Since you're off early today, come over and talk to Sophie first. I'll go check on our dinner." Grandma Walton said, and in a subtle way, she created an opportunity for Hurley to spend time with Sophie.
However, Hurley is now able to create opportunities on his own, so he doesn't need his grandmother's help anymore. "Sit down, Grandma. I'll take care of the kitchen," he said.
The chef, who was personally chosen by Hurley, was a five-star culinary expert, ensuring exquisite taste in every dish.
"You!" The old lady was angry and didn't know what to say. Her eldest grandson did not seem to be aware of the situation at all. She had been trying to set the stage for them, but Hurley seemed to have completely missed the point as he made his way to the kitchen.
When he entered the kitchen and saw that the cook was absorbed in his duties, Hurley rolled up his sleeves and approached him.
In his previous attempts at cooking, Hurley had struggled with certain aspects such as heat control and seasoning. Hurley asked directly about his doubts.
He also had two specific dishes that he wanted to prepare, but he had run into difficulties and was not sure what he was doing wrong.
When the chef realized that Mr. Walton was inquiring himself, he was almost overcome with nervousness. "Mr. Walton, w... what would you like to eat?" he stammered.
Hurley clarified, "What kind of dishes are you going to make?"
The chef said the menu and Hurley nodded after listening to it. Then he asked, "Could I try making this dish?"
The chef's eyes immediately widened in horror. "Mr. Walton, if my cooking is not to your liking, I'm sure I can prepare something else for you."
When he heard that, he thought that he was going to be fired from his job.
Hurley quickly reassured him, "No need. In fact, I'd like you to be my guide in the preparation of these two dishes myself."
It had all been Hurley's own blind research before, and he hadn't even been able to eat what he had made.
Now that there happens to be a cook here, Hurley wants to be guided by a professional.
When the chef realized that Hurley had no intention of replacing him and that he really only wanted to cook two dishes on his own, he began teaching Hurley, even though he was nervous about teaching his employer.
With the chef's guidance, Hurley discovered that cooking wasn't as intimidating as he had thought.
Outside the kitchen, in the main hall, Grandma Walton noticed that Hurley hadn't returned. "Where has Hurley gone off to now?" she wondered aloud.
Could it really be that Hurley had run away?
She remembered that when she had told Hurley about this marriage for the first time, he had been against it.
Today, she had also called Hurley and called him back, the purpose of which was also to let the two people get along better. However, she hadn't told Hurley that Sophie was going to be there.
Could it be that Hurley doesn't like Sophie right now, so when he saw Sophie there, he had to make a run for it?
How else could he see that someone was late and didn't say hello, and he didn't want to have a conversation with Sophie, so he went straight to the kitchen.
But the old lady didn't know that Hurley and Sophie had become closer to each other, she was still in the phase where they didn't like each other. And the more she thought about it, the more her suspicions seemed to make sense to her.
Soon it was time for dinner. Hurley unbuttoned his apron and came out of the kitchen while the maid brought the two dishes he had cooked to the table.
Seeing this, the old lady hurried over, "What the hell are you doing in the kitchen? What took you so long to come out?"
Hurley replied, "I just wanted to help out a little."
"The smell of oil smoke is all over you. Hurry up and change; we have guests tonight," she advised, glancing at Sophie who was sitting on the sofa.
Hurley also glanced at Sophie, who was still sitting on the sofa, and realized that he had to look good in front of Sophie. It was a good thing that his grandmother also had his clothes here, along with his children's clothes when he brought them here from time to time.
Hurley also took a quick shower before he came down, and the two children came down from the top floor as well.
The old lady made sure that Hurley sat next to Sophie.
The old lady looked at the two dishes. "Why do these two dishes feel a little black and mushy? Let's take them down."
After all, they were supposed to entertain the guests with the best food.
The old lady was about to call the maid when Hurley quickly interjected, "Grandma, maybe they taste better than they look?"
The old lady looked at him, not understanding why Hurley was so strange today.
"Then I'll try them." As she spoke, the old lady took a little and tasted it, frowning when she finished.
"Let's replace it," she said.
The taste is ordinary, but it's definitely not delicious.
She usually eats it, but today she is running late, so she is asking the cook to change two more dishes for her.
Sophie then offered, "I'll try it too.
That taste...
Upon tasting, Sophie immediately recognized the dishes as Hurley's creations. It was no wonder that he had spent so much time in the kitchen; the dishes had been noticeably improved from the previous ones.
Hurley waited expectantly for Sophie's verdict and was nervous that he hadn't even noticed.
If she found them unpalatable, he should let them be thrown away.
"It's a little plain compared to the other dishes," Sophie remarked.
"Compared to the other dishes, it's really a bit ordinary. Sophie commented.
When Hurley heard Sophie say this, he didn't get angry at all but felt that he had to continue to practice again.
One day, he will be able to make delicious meals and eat them at a later time.
Just as he was about to call for a servant to take away the two dishes that he had made, Sophie spoke up. "It may not be outstanding, but it's definitely edible. It's just an ordinary dish, so let's not waste it." She said.
When he heard Sophie's words, Hurley's emotions went on a roller coaster ride.
Sophie's willingness to eat his cooking, even if it wasn't perfect, indicated that she had a high opinion of him. Why else would she put up with his less-than-perfect attempts at cooking?
Sophie said so, and these two dishes remained.
Grateful for her understanding, Hurley also served a small portion to both of his children, so that they could taste what their father used to cook. He had in mind that Jake had once expressed a desire to have a taste of his cooking, and even though that attempt was only moderately successful, it was an improvement.
The dinner turned out to be quite pleasant. In Grandma Walton's eyes, Sophie was her granddaughter-in-law in her heart, which made the meal even more enjoyable.
"Sophie, you have to try this. It's our chef's specialty," Grandma Walton said, offering Sophie a bite with her chopsticks. She had skillfully wrapped a piece of lamb with green onions, allowing the flavors to meld, making the meat tender and aromatic.
"Grandma!" Hurley interrupted, "Sophie is allergic to mutton."
