Rachel clicked into the room on her high heels, perfectly made up with a radiant complexion that stood in stark contrast to my bandage-wrapped body.
"I heard you got hurt pretty badly," her sweet voice dripped with undisguised malice. "Derek's been taking care of me around the clock these past few days, personally feeding me, coaxing me to sleep..."
She tilted her head with fake innocence. "And here you are, lying here with not a single soul coming to visit you. How pathetic."
I turned my face away, unable to look at her.
"Need me to help you out?" Rachel suddenly reached over and pressed down hard on my fractured leg.
"Ahh!" The excruciating pain made me shove her away instinctively.
Rachel stumbled backward and crashed to the floor. "You actually dare to push me?"
She got up, brushed the dust off her skirt, and snarled, "Derek treats me like his most precious treasure—afraid I'll break if he holds me too tight, afraid I'll melt if he keeps me too close... And you dare treat me like this?!"
"Fine. Just you wait."
She shot me a vicious glare and stormed out, slamming the door behind her. My heart clenched with a sinking feeling.
Sure enough, Derek burst through the door in less than ten minutes.
"Sienna!" His eyes blazed red as he grabbed my throat. "Rachel came to visit you out of the kindness of her heart, and you sent thugs to assault her?!"
My pupils contracted. "I didn't..."
"Still lying! If I hadn't gotten there in time, she would've been..."
He took a deep breath, his gaze turning arctic cold. "I know you like me, but I've told you countless times—I don't like you. If you destroy Rachel, I won't just continue not liking you. I'll hate you to my very core."
I coughed violently, tears blurring my vision. "I really... didn't..."
"Fine." Derek suddenly smiled, but it was a smile that could freeze hell over. "Since you won't admit it, I'll give you a taste of your own medicine."
He clapped his hands. Five burly men filed into the room.
My pupils dilated in shock. "Derek! What are you doing?!"
"What do you think?" Derek stared at me coldly. "You hurt Rachel. Now you pay the price."
I struggled to get out of bed but couldn't move with fractures throughout my body. "Are you insane? If you touch me, it'll destroy our families' partnership!"
"For Rachel's sake, so what?" Derek turned to leave. "Enjoy yourself."
I screamed in desperation, "Derek! Are you really going to be this heartless?!"
Derek paused and looked back. "Since you're scared, I'll give you one chance. Promise me you won't choose me as your fiancé on your birthday, and I'll let you off today."
"I was never going to choose you!" My voice cracked. "I'd choose anyone before I'd choose you!"
Derek's expression darkened. "Not choose me? You think I'd believe that?"
He let out a cold laugh. "You've followed me around since we were kids, liked me for all these years. Since you're so stubborn, don't blame me for being ruthless."
The moment the door slammed shut, the five men closed in on me.
I shut my eyes in despair as the sound of tearing fabric filled my ears...
