Leon felt her suddenly squeeze his hand tight. He glanced over and saw Caitlyn's lips pressed together, her face gone pale—she looked like she was trying to tough out some serious pain.
His heart skipped a beat, and panic flashed across his face. "Does it hurt? I'm sorry... I won't tease you anymore... It's my fault. If you're upset, I'll let go, okay? Please don't be mad, Caitlyn..."
Caitlyn almost burst out laughing from sheer frustration when she heard that. 'What an idiot... Does he really think the pain will just stop if I'm not mad?'
But the stabbing pain in her stomach only made Caitlyn grip Leon's hand even tighter, and suddenly, a huge wave of helplessness washed over her.
She was already feeling awful, and Leon just had to make her even more upset. Things had just started to calm down, and now she was all worked up again, and the pain flared right back up.
The more she thought about it, the more wronged she felt. Tears welled up in Caitlyn's eyes, making them shimmer as she stared straight ahead, refusing to look at Leon. Slowly, she let go of his hand, wanting nothing more than to curl up by herself.
Seeing her like this—angry, sad, stubborn, and hurting—Leon's heart just about shattered, and a vein throbbed on his forehead.
Watching Caitlyn completely ignore him, not holding his hand anymore, hugging a pillow and curling up in the corner of the sofa, quietly wiping away tears as she tried to endure the pain and cold sweat, Leon finally couldn't take it anymore.
The image of Caitlyn all alone at home flashed through his mind again, and he remembered how stupidly he'd just made her angry.
Heat rushed to Leon's head, and he was instantly mad at himself.
He took a deep breath, gritted his teeth, and suddenly stood up from the bucket. Ignoring Caitlyn's shocked look, he plopped down right next to her, wrapped his arms around her curled-up body, and before she could even react, pulled her completely into his embrace.
Leon pulled the pillow aside, rubbed his hands together to warm them up, and quickly but gently started massaging Caitlyn's aching lower belly.
"L-Leon!" Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, echoing through her whole mind in an instant.
Pressed close against his warm body, surrounded by that faint, familiar scent that was uniquely Leon, Caitlyn froze up, her eyes wide in shock. Yet it was like all her strength had melted away—she went completely limp in his arms, unable to move at all.
Her heart was like a sledgehammer, pounding away at her chest. Leon's sudden move shattered her thoughts, leaving her mind in total chaos.
"Don't move... Let me warm you up, it'll help," Leon murmured softly, his breath now filled with her scent.
He looked calm on the outside, but inside, his heart had shot up into his throat, beating so hard it felt like it might jump right out. He was a nervous wreck.
He couldn't help but wonder, 'What if she... absolutely hates this, and pushes me away...'
Leon didn't dare think about it, didn't want to. He just held Caitlyn tightly, gently massaging her belly, trying to distract her from the pain of her period.
The living room went quiet in an instant. Caitlyn felt boneless in his arms, so soft that her half-hearted struggles made him wonder if she was actually resisting or just being a little playful.
However, this peaceful, warm feeling—being held so close, as if she could just melt into his arms and stay there forever, undisturbed—slowly made her settle down.
Her head felt hot and fuzzy; she couldn't think straight anymore.
The cramps kept coming in waves, but Leon's embrace seemed to have some kind of magic, slowly easing the pain.
Honestly, it didn't really take away the pain, but the double comfort, both in her body and her heart, finally let Caitlyn relax and feel safe.
"You perv..." Caitlyn slumped in Leon's arms, her lips barely moving as she whispered the insult.
The only sounds in the quiet living room were her soft voice and the steady breathing by her ear. The peaceful atmosphere and the warm, golden light made her feel even sleepier.
But she couldn't deny that it felt so cozy, snuggled up in such a warm embrace.
Caitlyn's mind grew fuzzier and fuzzier, her whole body feeling tipsy—cheeks flushed pink, eyes drifting out of focus.
Leon held back the urge to kiss her, just gently hugging her and softly massaging her belly, trying to distract her. "Feeling any better?"
"You perv..." Caitlyn kept mumbling under her breath.
Time seemed to slow to a crawl, everything blurring around the edges.
The TV in front of them was playing some weird, pointless movie, flickering with a strange yellowish light.
Caitlyn quietly leaned against him, her eyelids growing heavier and heavier as she felt so sleepy.
The pendulum swung back and forth, marking the slow passage of time.
Little by little, Caitlyn's breathing evened out, her whole body finally relaxing.
Leon took a deep breath, then let it out slowly.
He glanced at the clock—almost two hours had gone by.
Leon shifted Caitlyn gently, letting her rest in the crook of his arm.
Her golden hair spilled over him like scattered sunlight. Even asleep, her delicate brows were slightly furrowed and her lips pressed together, as if she was still enduring something, or maybe lost in a bad dream. That faint trace of grievance and exhaustion made her look even more fragile and endearing.
Fast asleep, Caitlyn unconsciously turned her face, nestling it softly against Leon. At some point, her hand had reached out, clutching his shirt tightly, like she was finally letting go of all the loneliness and discomfort she'd bottled up while home alone, and could finally lean on someone and quietly let it all out.
Right now, there was none of the resistance she usually showed when awake.
Leon looked down at the golden-haired girl in his arms, beautiful as a fairy, and for a moment, he just spaced out.
He stared at Caitlyn for a long time, watching her curl up a little, the discomfort still lingering between her brows, and a wave of heartache washed over him.
Leon took a deep breath, carefully scooping up Caitlyn's soft, springy thighs. He forced himself not to let his mind wander, gently lifting her into his arms.
Caitlyn's brow furrowed, her lips moving as she mumbled something unintelligible, then she drifted right back into a deep sleep.
Leon stood frozen, not daring to move until he was sure Caitlyn was sound asleep again. Only then did he let out a sigh of relief and slowly carry her toward her room.
Caitlyn's bedroom was as girly as ever. Even though she liked to act all mature and big-sisterly, this room totally gave away her true self.
Leon glanced at the little clothes scattered across the bed and couldn't help but feel a headache coming on, wondering, 'So she's actually kind of messy when no one's looking, huh? She doesn't even bother to make the bed...'
Leon shook his head with a smile. "Lady Caitlyn, you really are a little lazy sometimes..."
