That afternoon, with Caitlyn looking at him all pitiful, Leon almost gave in and decided to stay home.
But Caitlyn quickly pulled herself together. After she promised she wouldn't act all mopey like yesterday when he got back, Leon finally let himself get nudged out the door.
Caitlyn looked at him. After hesitating a bit, she said, "You'll be back for dinner... right?"
Leon nodded. "Even if I have to cross fire and blades, I'll make it back!"
"Show-off..." Caitlyn let out a little huff, leaning against the doorframe, but her eyes still lingered on him, not quite ready to let go.
But it came to her that they were still just friends, so she thought if she got too possessive, it'd just get awkward.
Caitlyn gently reminded him, "Drive safe, okay? Don't speed. It's still drizzling and the roads are slippery."
Leon smirked. "Relax! I won't let my Dark Destroyer get even a single scratch."
Caitlyn was honestly speechless for a second. That "Dark Destroyer" was just the ridiculous name he'd given his little scooter.
She really couldn't figure out why a guy who used to be a Hero would name his ride something like that.
As expected, among all those Human Alliance Heroes, finding one even a little bit kinder than her was basically impossible.
She could only say, "I'm going back to sleep."
Leon nodded before turning around. "Go ahead, get some rest. I'll be back by the time you wake up."
Leon really did want to stay home and keep Caitlyn company, but with her birthday coming up, if he wanted to cook a decent meal, he had to take every chance to practice.
Besides, after taking advantage of her being all soft and clingy that morning, by the afternoon, Caitlyn flat-out refused to let him massage her belly.
Letting out a long sigh, Leon made his way to Ekavine Academy, took a detour to the principal's office to explain that Caitlyn wasn't feeling well, and then, under Arwen's knowing, almost doting smile, wandered off to the kitchen to find his temporary, bargain-bin mentor.
Even though, out of pride, Andre absolutely refused to admit to that title.
When Leon saw him again, Andre was already in full command, directing the kitchen staff as they prepped for dinner.
He greeted Leon with a smile, showing no hint of awkwardness about yesterday's embarrassing episode coming to light.
"I thought you'd skip today," Andre joked.
Leon shrugged. "Honestly, I wasn't planning to come. She's not feeling well and needed someone to look after her... But my good intentions just got me kicked out."
He spread his hands, looking completely helpless.
A little trash talk about Caitlyn behind her back—just to get back at her for not letting him snuggle or even pat her head during their nap earlier.
Andre burst out laughing, easily picking up on the smugness in Leon's words and the look on his face.
He knew that look all too well.
Back in the day, when he was wooing Elsie, he'd get just as cocky whenever he made any progress.
But those days were long gone now.
Andre got back to business. "Alright, Lord Radford, you can stick with me today and watch how things are done. Once the kitchen rush is over, I'll put you through some training myself."
Leon looked a bit troubled. "Well... I can only stay for two hours, though. I promised Caitlyn."
Andre paused for a moment, then couldn't help but sound a little bitter. "Men shouldn't be so clingy... Especially a big Hero like you, Lord Radford. You'd look way cooler if you acted a bit tougher, you know!"
"Caitlyn's the clingy one, not me. I'm always the cool, aloof type!" Leon crossed his arms and lied with a straight face.
Leon strongly believed that every night, it was Caitlyn who wanted to cuddle so she could sleep well, and he was just being a good guy, letting her do it—reluctantly, of course.
Andre shook his head. These two lovebirds hadn't even been at Ekavine Academy for two months, but their unique dynamic had already made them campus celebrities.
Especially that guy who couldn't wait to show off his girlfriend to the world, but was so possessive he'd glare at anyone who so much as glanced at her.
It was total campus mafia vibes.
There were even rumors going around that a few students who ended up at the police station might have had something to do with the two of them, and Andre just found it wild.
Andre could only say, "Alright, I'll trust you, Lord Radford."
Leon shrugged. "Hey, we're all friends here. Just call me Leon."
The next day, Caitlyn was as stubborn as ever. Even with Leon doing everything he could to talk her out of it, she insisted on going to class.
Leon was at his wits' end—why was she suddenly so hung up on this?
He couldn't help but ask, "Caitlyn, didn't you retire so you could finally relax? If you're not feeling well, just stay home and rest, okay? Why push yourself to go to class?"
"I'm not pushing myself!" Caitlyn shot him a glare and let out a little huff.
She was already feeling a lot better than the last couple of days—at least she wasn't so pale and breaking out in cold sweats anymore.
Leon had been fussing over her nonstop these past two days, treating her like a baby. Caitlyn's pride just couldn't stand it—she needed to prove she wasn't about to be taken down by a little period.
Leon didn't get it, but there was no stopping her.
He thought about just scooping her up and tucking her back into bed, but with her color back and her stubborn streak showing, he'd probably just get smacked if he tried.
He suggested, "Let's just take a cab. No need to ride the Dark Destroyer today."
"No way. We're taking it. It's not even raining," Caitlyn said, arms crossed and tone unshakeable.
Leon lowered his gaze, giving her a long look. "You sure you'll be comfortable on the scooter like this?"
"And what's it to you? I said I want to ride it!" She was acting like a sulky kid, and Leon could only sigh, feeling like a helpless dad with a stubborn daughter who just wouldn't listen.
He gave up arguing with Caitlyn and quietly messaged Germaine for advice.
Germaine: [If it's not too bad, commuting is fine. Lady Caitlyn's pretty healthy, but she gets cold easily. Make sure she keeps warm, especially her legs. Tell her to wear something warmer.]
Leon stared into Caitlyn's eyes. "Go put on some cotton trousers."
Caitlyn stared him down for a moment, then finally gave in—a little compromise from both sides.
Leon stood in the living room, staring up at the ceiling.
He wondered, 'Why does it feel like her period's turned her into a little kid again...
'It's like all her brains just leaked out or something.
'Is this buff really that intense?
'Still, the one good thing is, Caitlyn seems less distant now—she has started to let her guard down and rely on me, even if she tries to hide it.
'Guess that's progress? Yeah, gotta keep at it!'
Once she got on the back seat, Leon said, "If you don't hold on tight, I'm not going anywhere." Caitlyn grumbled but wrapped her arms around his waist, hugging him tight.
Under her golden hair, her fair cheeks were tinged with a faint blush.
She was obviously embarrassed, but she wasn't really resisting.
As the cold wind brushed past, Caitlyn hugged him even tighter from behind.
He felt so warm that she felt she could just stay like this forever.
