Yann was speechless, and he thought, 'So it turns out I was just imagining things after all.'
Adrian claimed to be busy, but he still ended up chatting with Yann for over an hour.
When Yann was about to leave, Adrian even let him walk off with two cartons of cigarettes and a few cans of coffee beans.
Elara was tidying up the coffee cups on the coffee table. "Mr. Hartley, you and Mr. Yann Kalmien seem to have a really close relationship."
"Yeah, there were a few years when I went to Marisiton a lot, so we started hanging out more," Adrian replied.
Elara nodded. "Rich guys make friends with each other. It's only natural, isn't it?"
Adrian caught the tone in her voice. "Got something against rich people?"
"Of course not," Elara replied, carefully scrubbing the coffee cups. "I'm just saying, when you're all in the same circle, it's easy to see eye to eye."
Once the cups were clean, Elara placed them in the sterilizer and dried her hands with a paper towel.
"Come here," Adrian said, still sitting on the sofa, his gaze lingering on Elara's legs.
Elara walked over and sat down beside him, turning to face him. Her eyes met Adrian's scrutinizing gaze. "What do you want?" she asked.
His eyes dropped, lingering on her black stockings. "Why not wear long dresses from now on?"
Elara's skirt wasn't actually short. It was just a bit above her knees. But with her long legs and perky hips, the fitted skirt just made her look way too sexy.
Elara blinked, a little confused. "Why?"
"Long dresses look nice," Adrian said.
"Long dresses don't really go with my style, and they're not businesslike enough. This skirt's already almost at my knees, it's not even short," Elara replied.
Elara hadn't missed Howard's sleazy look earlier, but that wasn't her fault. She was dressed properly, not trying to show off or anything. She wasn't about to wrap herself up like a mummy just because some guys couldn't control themselves.
Elara's eyes lifted, and she said offhandedly, "Mr. Hartley, honestly, I'm good-looking. It's not the first time I've gotten looks like that."
Adrian was surprised by her response. His gaze turned sterner as he stared at her.
"Mr. Hartley, why don't you try lobbying for a law that gives life sentences to guys who can't keep their eyes on themselves?" Elara joked, cracking herself up.
But Adrian's face stayed icy cold, showing no sign of amusement. "Mr. Hartley, do you remember the first time we met?" Elara asked.
Adrian couldn't help but recall the pouring rain that day, and then those steamy moments in the presidential suite.
"Remember how you bullied me that day? You said peeking at someone while they were naked wasn't even illegal," Elara teased.
Adrian fell silent.
"If Howard gets life, then what about you, Mr. Hartley? Shouldn't you get the death sentence or something..." Elara's words were cut off by a kiss.
Adrian kissed her, just to keep her quiet. He realized that even with all his lawyer skills, he was no match for Elara in a war of words. 'What a little minx,' he thought.
The kiss ended quickly, and Adrian let her go. "Were you mad that day?"
Elara frowned. "What do you think? You saw me naked and then blamed me for it, using that nasty lawyer mouth of yours to leave me completely speechless."
"Sorry." Adrian's sudden apology cut Elara off mid-rant.
Elara shot him a glare. "Just saying sorry isn't enough, you know."
"Of course. I'll make it up to you," Adrian replied.
Elara wasn't really after compensation, but since it already happened, an apology plus a little payback didn't sound so bad.
Suddenly, a question popped into her head. Elara asked, "That day, you saw me naked, so why on earth did you refuse to leave? And why did you just keep staring at me like that?"
Adrian had indeed stood there, frozen, for a long time.
Maybe it was because he never expected that the woman he'd been searching for all those years would suddenly show up in front of him, stark naked, doing something so unexpected.
At that moment, Adrian cursed inwardly. Elara, who used to shine with kindness, was actually pleasuring herself. The gap was just too much for him to take in all at once.
Back then, she was so young, innocent, and pure, her voice bright and clear. However, years later, she even knew how to get herself off. He was really pissed off. She was the one who shattered her own angelic image in his mind.
Adrian steadied himself, glanced at the curious Elara, and couldn't help but let out an exasperated, amused laugh. He decided to tease her a bit.
Adrian curved his lips into a wicked smile. "Because that day, I was thinking."
"Thinking?" Elara looked baffled. "Seriously, what could you possibly be thinking about at a time like that?"
"I was actually debating whether I should just have my way with you right there on the spot," Adrian teased.
Elara fell silent.
At six in the evening, Elara was working on tomorrow's schedule in the outer office when Adrian came out and tapped on her desk.
Elara looked up and saw that he'd changed into a different suit, his tie gone, and he was probably getting ready for a dinner party.
"Victor's here to pick me up. You can head home now," Adrian said.
Elara nodded happily. "Have fun tonight, Mr. Hartley."
Adrian's gaze fixed on Elara's smiling eyes. "Why are you so happy?"
Elara thought, 'Who wouldn't be happy to get off work?' She tried to hide her excitement. "It's nothing special."
Adrian didn't say anything else and just turned to leave.
As soon as Adrian was gone, Elara shut down her computer, grabbed her bag, and made a quick exit.
The movie was set for eight, so Elara drove over to Tiffany Café on Maple Street. She and Ruby had agreed to have a simple meal at the café before heading straight to the movies together.
By the time Elara arrived, Ruby already had the food laid out on the table. There was nothing better than being able to sit down and dig right away.
For once, Ruby wasn't busy with her usual flirty chats on WhatsApp. She was just having a good time with Elara, laughing and chatting away.
"Victor was such a pain last night. I finally managed to kick him out, but just over an hour later, he was back knocking on my door," Ruby complained.
Elara grinned knowingly. "Do you know what he was doing during that hour?"
"Wait, you know?" Ruby blinked in surprise.
Elara covered her mouth, trying not to laugh. "Adrian sent him to deliver some late-night snacks, but when Victor saw I was there, too, he got so annoyed he totally gave Adrian attitude."
"Why would he get mad at Adrian for that?" Ruby asked, baffled.
"I was in a bathrobe last night, so Victor probably thought Adrian and I had sex. He still hasn't managed to win you over, so of course he was all jealous and sulky about it," Elara explained.
Ruby cracked up. "No wonder he looked all pouty and wronged when he showed up later."
"See? I told you he was all..." Elara started, grinning.
"Wait a sec, why were you even at Adrian's place that late? And in a bathrobe?" Ruby suddenly interrupted, eyes wide with curiosity.
Elara fell silent.
After dinner, the two of them drove over to the Century Cinema. With a bunch of blockbusters premiering, the place was already packed to the brim.
Hand in hand, they squeezed through the crowd, one leading, one following, just barely making it from the entrance to the ticket machine. At least, they managed to get their tickets without a hitch.
They'd wanted to grab some coffee and popcorn, but the lines were so long that if they waited, the movie would've already started. So, they just went in with nothing at all, not even a bottle of water.
Elara had booked the most luxurious, top-tier screening room in the theater. The soft, comfy double sofa bed came with pillows and blankets, and there were partitions on either side for extra privacy.
Elara and Ruby snagged the prime spot right in the middle. They kicked off their shoes and settled onto the sofa, lounging back in total comfort.
Ruby let out a sigh of contentment. "This is the first time I've ever watched a movie like this. This sofa is so cozy. I might just fall asleep."
Elara laughed at her. "Honestly, you'd probably fall asleep even if you were standing up."
Only Elara and Julian actually liked this kind of movie. Every year, Ruby just came along for the ride, and she always ended up dozing off halfway through, falling asleep on Elara's shoulder.
Ruby pouted. "Why didn't you invite Julian today?"
Elara glanced at the time. "He just got chewed out yesterday. Let him stay at the office and work overtime to redeem himself."
It was already 7:48, and Elara was starting to wonder. The movie was about to start, but besides the two of them, there wasn't a single other person in the whole theater.
"Elara, didn't it say the theater was sold out when we grabbed the tickets? It's almost showtime, and there's no one here. Did we go to the wrong theater or something?" Ruby asked.
Elara frowned and looked at her ticket. It was A1, sofa bed hall, definitely right. She got up and went outside to ask a staff member, "Excuse me, is this the right theater for this ticket?"
The staff member took the ticket, nodded, and said, "Yes, the movie's about to start. Please head in and find your seats."
"It's almost showtime. How come no one else is here yet?" Elara asked, puzzled.
The staff member scratched his head. "I'm not sure."
Elara went back to the sofa and pulled the blanket over her legs.
"So, what did he say?" Ruby asked.
"He said we're in the right place and the movie's playing as scheduled, but he has no idea why it's just us here," Elara replied.
"Well, that's fine. It's like we booked the whole theater for ourselves," Ruby said.
Elara smiled. "Same here."
With just two minutes left before the movie started, Elara put her phone on silent, picked up her glasses, and put them on, then got comfy, ready for the movie.
Just then, they heard footsteps coming down the aisle. "Dammit, Logan, did you really have to finish that last bite of spaghetti? We almost missed the movie," a voice said.
Ruby paused mid-scroll on her novel, her hand freezing. That voice was so familiar.
"How is that my fault? If Adrian hadn't insisted on getting popcorn, we wouldn't have been late," another voice replied.
A deep, magnetic voice cut in, "You didn't buy any?"
Three guys walked in, each carrying a bucket of popcorn and two cups of cappuccino, looking a little lost.
The movie was about to start, but the lights were still on. Ruby and Elara both turned their heads toward the aisle at the same time and spotted the three guys who had just come in.
Elara took off her glasses and blinked. "Victor? Adrian?"
