Since he was lounging back, Adrian had just taken off his coat.
He was in a crisp white shirt, the perfect tailoring showing off the sculpted lines of his body, especially around his trim waist and abs. With every little movement, the definition of his abs stood out clearly.
Elara's hand froze on his abs. With the couch-bed still swaying beneath them, there was no way she could sit up straight.
She didn't dare look up at Adrian, so her gaze stayed level, right at the open collar of his shirt, where a few buttons were undone. His pronounced Adam's apple was practically right in front of her face.
A faint woody cologne mixed with a hint of tobacco hit Elara's nose. In the shifting light, she couldn't help but swallow.
Adrian looked down at the flustered Elara. "Sweetheart, if you want to touch, just do it. Don't play coy."
Elara frowned, her glasses hiding the glare she shot him. "How was I supposed to know this sofa would move with the plot?"
"Don't tell me this is your first time in 4D," he teased.
Elara actually had, but that was a couple of years ago overseas. She figured they hadn't caught on here yet. She knew there was no way to explain, so she just shrugged. "Nope, never."
As the scene on the big screen shifted, the couch finally stopped shaking.
Elara straightened up to keep watching the movie, with Adrian leaning a little closer beside her.
Their arms were pressed together, and as Elara was focused on the movie, Adrian suddenly took her hand and pulled it over to him.
He tugged the hem of his white shirt out of his slacks, slipping Elara's hand right under the fabric.
Elara turned to look at him, only to see that Adrian had already taken off his glasses and was pressing her palm directly against his burning hot abs. He pulled the blanket up a bit, covering up what was going on underneath.
Elara's thoughts went wild for a few seconds, and she instinctively tried to pull her hand back. "What are you up to?"
Adrian slowly guided her fingertips upward, his touch going from feather-light to something deeper, more intense.
The solid, heated feel of his abs sent a jolt straight through her. Elara tried to yank her hand away, but Adrian just tightened his grip on her wrist.
With a wicked glint in his eyes and a devilish smile, he leaned a little closer, his voice so hoarse it was almost sinful. "Don't like it?"
The movie's soundtrack throbbed with passionate music, the kind that sent a rush of dopamine through one's veins.
With Adrian's raw masculinity practically flooding the air, Elara's mind went hazy for a second, and before she knew it, she was letting herself sink right into him.
His abs rose and fell with every breath, and her soft fingers tentatively explored the ridges and valleys. Elara curled her fingertips, letting her nails graze lightly over his skin. A tingling, electric sensation shot through Adrian's whole body.
Adrian swallowed down the heat burning inside him. "Sweetheart, don't go lighting fires you can't put out. I'm not sure I'll be able to stop."
Adrian gently took off her glasses, and the rationality in Elara's eyes started to melt away. One, two, three, four... All eight abs, perfectly lined up, the real deal, no doubt about it.
She'd only dared to sneak glances before, never brave enough to actually touch. At that moment, even if she couldn't see them, her hands were getting the full experience. Seeing was nothing compared to actually touching.
Elara kept exploring, her fingers tracing the dangerously suggestive lines of his V-cut. Her heart skipped a beat, and her quick, shallow breaths fanned hotly over his Adam's apple as it bobbed beneath her.
Adrian let out a low, hungry chuckle from above, his voice growing even rougher. "Guess you like it, sweetheart?"
The couch started shaking again in sync with the movie, and Adrian took the opportunity to roll over, his body gently pressing Elara down. His burning kiss found her lips, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
When his tongue slipped past her lips, Elara completely forgot to resist.
Elara knew she'd fallen for him, but she slowly opened her eyes and looked him over.
To her surprise, Adrian's eyes had been open the whole time, his deep, intense gaze watching her just as closely. Their eyes met, and as the screen dimmed, they both faded from each other's sight.
In the dimness, every brush of lips and tangle of tongues felt magnified, their mingled breaths stealing the air from the room until it was almost impossible to breathe.
The couch kept rocking beneath them, the movie on screen hitting its peak. Sensing Elara's mind was getting hazy, Adrian wasted no time. He pressed his advantage, determined to claim her even more deeply.
His strong arm slipped under the blanket and draped over her long legs in black stockings. His hand was burning hot, wherever he touched, Elara just went weak, turning to jelly under his palm.
Elara's fingers slid down along his V-cut, almost without thinking, until her fingertips brushed against the cool metal of his belt buckle. Just when it seemed like things would go even further, Elara suddenly stopped.
A faint smile flickered in her eyes, just barely visible to Adrian. He lifted his head slightly, breaking off the kiss. Elara, still unsatisfied, ran her tongue over her damp lips.
Teasing, bewitching, she was absolutely driving him crazy. What a dangerous little minx she was. A smirk tugged at Adrian's lips. "Like what you feel?"
'So good,' she thought, but Elara kept that little secret to herself.
Seeing that Elara wasn't in any hurry to pull her hand away, Adrian nuzzled even closer, his body pressing up against hers.
The couch rocked in a teasing rhythm, stoking the heat between them. Under the blanket, it was all warmth and intimacy, and Elara suddenly noticed the growing tension between his legs.
Elara's eyes curved into a smile as she teased, "Adrian, seriously? Just touch your abs and you're already losing control?"
Adrian wasn't the least bit embarrassed. "Yeah, I can't help myself when it comes to you."
Once she figured she'd had enough, Elara pulled her hand out from under his shirt, the smile on her face fading a little. "Done touching. Can we watch the movie now?"
She might have stopped teasing, but Adrian's heart was still burning up, the heat inside him refusing to die down. "You really think I'm not better looking than a movie?" Adrian quipped, his tone half-joking, half-serious.
Elara rolled her eyes at him, as if that tender moment had never happened. "The movie's still better than you."
Elara pushed herself up, putting some distance between them, and calmly fixed her slightly wrinkled shirt.
Adrian had no choice but to tuck his shirt back into his slacks. He stepped out for a quick smoke before coming back.
Elara caught the faint scent of tobacco on him and knew he'd gone to cool off. She took a casual sip of her cappuccino and settled back to watch the rest of the movie, acting like nothing had happened.
By the time the movie ended, Elara just felt kind of indifferent. She couldn't tell if it was the movie that had changed, or if it was her. Maybe it was just that the passion she had in her younger days wasn't there anymore.
As the movie reached the post-credits scene, Elara pulled her phone out of her bag and glanced at the screen.
She saw a few new messages and some missed calls on WhatsApp. She opened the chat, frowning as she zoned out for a moment, just staring at the screen.
Alex: [Did my dad give you something?]
Alex: [Where are you? I'll come get it from you.]
Elara was really struggling with what to do about that. She remembered what Adrian told her last time. That wasn't something she could just take on herself.
After all, it was about the Hartley family and the Heaton family. Other than Adrian, no one else could handle that.
It was already a big deal that Adrian was willing to take this on. If she handed it back to Alex...
She hesitated for a moment, typing out a long message in the chat, but before she could hit send, Adrian grabbed her phone right out of her hand.
Elara looked up, meeting Adrian's eyes. There was a hint of coldness in his gaze. "Hey, what are you doing?" she asked.
"I told you, stay out of this," he said, his tone firm.
Elara didn't really want to get involved either. "I'm not planning to, but the thing is, we really do have it. He has a right to know, doesn't he?"
"I'll have someone get in touch with him tomorrow. Just pretend you don't know anything," he said.
Elara looked thoughtful, considering his words.
"I'm doing this to protect you. The less you know, the better," he added.
Elara chose to trust him, nodded, and turned off her screen.
But then Elara hesitated. She thought, 'What if Adrian is doing this for the Heaton family, for Josie, and trying to get his hands on the evidence?'
She asked, a little uncertain, "You're not just using me and Alex to help Josie, are you?"
Adrian wasn't surprised she'd think that. After all, he did have some history with Josie.
"If that was what I wanted, I would've just handed everything over to the Heaton family last night and scored some brownie points. The evidence is already in my hands. Why would I bother playing the good guy in front of you?"
Elara shot him a playful glare. "You better not be up to anything, got it?"
Elara just let it go. After all, the materials were already with Adrian anyway.
The post-credits scene ended, and the lights in the theater snapped all at once, flooding the place with brightness like it was broad daylight.
Elara stood up, tugged her skirt back down, and pretended like nothing had happened, as if that whole abs-touching scene had never even happened. Ruby finished getting ready and called over to Elara.
Elara didn't even say anything to Adrian. She just headed down to meet up with Ruby. The two guys trailed silently behind them as they left the theater, both feeling like something was missing.
When they got to the parking garage, Elara suddenly remembered something. She spun around to face the two tagalongs. "Wait a second, you two. Did you seriously forget why we even came out tonight?"
Victor stepped up and absentmindedly brushed a strand of hair out from under Ruby's coat, blurting out, "Weren't we here to watch a movie?"
Adrian's eyes lit up as he remembered. "Logan."
Victor's face fell. "Crap, we totally left him in the theater!"
