The four of them returned to the screening room and found Logan fast asleep in the back corner.
A pang of sympathy welled up in Victor's heart as he walked over and called out, "Logan."
Logan woke up groggily, frowning as he slowly opened his eyes and met the gazes of the four standing before him. He glanced around the room, still a bit dazed. He sat up listlessly, his voice a little hoarse. "Done with your date?"
"Bro, that's on me. Come on, let's hit up Aurora Club. I'll set you up with a girl," Victor said.
Logan clearly wasn't feeling it. He grabbed his jacket and put it on. "You guys go ahead. I came all this way just to be your third wheel? You think I have nothing better to do?"
There was a trace of bitterness in his words, and it even made Elara feel a bit embarrassed for him. "You three go have fun. Ruby and I are heading home," Elara said.
Elara never planned on joining them for another round anyway. She could finally go home and get some sleep.
Victor wasn't having it. "Come on, it's no fun if you two bail. Logan's just acting all cool. Trust me, this guy never turns down a drink."
Logan just stayed silent.
Elara waved her hand. "I'll pass. Ruby, why don't you go have some fun? I've been pretty tired these past couple of days and just want to go home and get some sleep."
Adrian figured she really was worn out.
She'd pulled an all-nighter at his place a few days ago, then went to Marisiton the next day. After that, she took an overnight trip to Hachester, spending the afternoon there.
And then she flew back to Veritasiton for the engagement party, and was at Adrian's place until after two in the morning last night. That morning, she headed straight to the law firm for work.
Adrian had trouble sleeping for years and had gotten used to it, but there was no way Elara could handle that kind of pace.
Adrian suggested they call it a night. "Let's do it tomorrow instead. Logan looks pretty tired, too." Then he turned to Elara on his right. "I'll take you home."
Elara knew that only Adrian could end things quickly and smoothly, so she nodded and agreed to let him take her home.
With the afterparty plans scrapped, Victor had no choice but to take Ruby home as well.
Left alone, Logan grumbled, "So, who's taking me home now?"
Adrian knew Elara had her own car, so he tossed his keys to Logan. "Drive my car back."
Logan caught the keys, looking like he'd rather do anything else. "Come on, I just landed today, the welcome dinner's already canceled, and now I have to drive myself home, too?"
Victor chimed in, "Be glad we're not making you call a cab."
Logan was left speechless. Honestly, if he'd known it'd turn out like that, he might as well have just grabbed a cab at the airport and gone home to crash. His poor, innocent heart just kept taking hit after hit.
Elara's car was parked on the first basement level, while Victor and Adrian's cars were on the second. When the elevator reached the first basement, Elara said goodbye to Ruby and stepped out first.
Adrian came out after her, not knowing where her car was parked, so he walked behind her. They were neither too close nor too far, just two steps apart.
The parking garage was buzzing with people leaving the event. When that ridiculously attractive pair walked by, one in front, one behind, everyone couldn't help but steal a few extra glances.
Adrian, standing a solid 6'2" and devastatingly handsome, had one hand casually in his pocket and the other holding a slim cigarette. He strolled with a laid-back, almost reckless swagger, his gaze never leaving Elara ahead of him.
Elara was beautiful, dressed in a body-hugging white top and black skirt that showed off every curve. Her stiletto heels with red soles made her legs look impossibly long and straight.
Elara fiddled with her car keys, clicked her fob to flash the headlights, and then turned to Adrian. "Should I drive, or do you want to take the wheel?"
Seeing how tired Elara was, he just took the keys from her hand. "I'll drive."
Elara slid into the passenger seat and reached for her seatbelt. But before she could grab it, Adrian leaned over, and his long arm stretched across her to snag the belt first.
He gave the belt a gentle tug, dipped his head to fasten it for her, then straightened up and buckled his own.
Elara turned her head, her eyes fixed on Adrian in the driver's seat.
Adrian sensed her gaze and turned his head, locking eyes with Elara. "Yeah?"
She frowned. "Adrian, you're acting strange."
Adrian, looking like he knew exactly how handsome he was, stared right back at her with those deep, captivating eyes, his tone smooth and a little bit seductive. "What's so weird about that?" he replied.
"When did you turn into such a softie? Buying coffee for me, buckling my seatbelt, and all that?" she teased.
A flicker of emotion flashed in Adrian's dark eyes. "Isn't this exactly your type?"
Elara honestly had no idea what her type was, so she just laughed and teased, "What type is that?"
"Mr. Nice Guy," he replied.
Her eyes curved with a playful glint, her soft red lips parting slightly. "And how do you know I like Mr. Nice Guys?"
Adrian knew she'd only ever had a thing for Alex, and Alex was the very definition of the "Mr. Nice Guy" vibe. "You like Alex," he said.
At that, Elara's eyelashes fluttered slightly, and she lowered her gaze. "It's not because of that."
Adrian's expression shifted a bit, but he didn't press the topic about Alex. He just said lightly, "Well, so you're not into Mr. Nice Guys?"
Elara looked up at him. "So, are you just going to become whatever type I like?"
"If it's something I can do, then yeah," he replied. "So, what's your ideal type?"
Elara didn't even know the answer herself. Seeing his curious look, she couldn't help but tease him. "My ideal type? A guy who's attractive and sexy."
Adrian immediately thought of Noah, the guy she'd mentioned earlier that day. "So, someone like Noah?" he asked.
Elara nodded with a smile. "Yeah."
Even Adrian couldn't keep his cool anymore. "Seriously? You actually think that guy looks good?"
Maybe guys just didn't get that whole gentle vibe. As far as Adrian was concerned, Noah was nowhere near his league.
"Come on, Mr. Hartley, you gotta let all kinds of guys shine," she teased. After all, there are tons of good-looking guys out there, all sorts of styles.
That rare hint of softness on his face disappeared without a trace. Adrian adjusted his seat and stepped on the gas.
At eleven at night, Veritasiton Avenue was nearly empty. Adrian drove the whole way with a face like a block of ice, not saying a single word.
When they got outside Flowery Apartments, Adrian pulled up by the curb.
Elara didn't get out right away. "Honestly, back then, I was just impressed by Noah's driving skills. It was more hero worship than anything else. If we're talking about what kind of guy I'd actually want as a boyfriend..."
Elara took a moment to think it over. 'To be real, that super steady, reliable vibe Alex has? Not really my thing,' she thought. "I think I'm more into guys who are powerful and a little dangerous," she admitted.
"Isn't that me?" Adrian said, sounding pretty confident. And honestly, he had every right to be.
In all of Veritasiton, if one were talking about the one at the very top, it had to be Adrian. No one was stronger than him.
Elara just smiled. "Mr. Hartley, no one can question your strength. But it's a shame you've already got a fiancée, so you don't even count."
Adrian lit a cigarette and held it between his fingers. "If I didn't have a fiancée, would you say yes?"
Elara paused for a moment, thinking, 'If he didn't have a fiancée. She'd never really thought about it before, and honestly, she didn't need to.
"Even if you didn't have a fiancée, you still wouldn't be on my list. After all, you and I live in completely different worlds," Elara said.
