Adrian had been in a coma for over two weeks after the accident, spending most of that time in the ICU. When he woke up, he realized the entire racing world had been turned upside down by Joseph.
Joseph had sent people to check the surveillance footage, but ironically, the section of the track where Adrian's accident happened wasn't captured at all.
The race officials explained that due to the bad weather, the monitoring and recording teams had been pulled back, and the over eighty drones sent out couldn't fly properly in the heavy rain, so they were recalled.
The reason for Adrian's accident was that a drone suddenly appeared in his sight. With the bike moving at high speed, he had to swerve to avoid it. The slippery road from the rain caused the bike to lose control and crash down the mountain.
Afterwards, the race officials explained that the thunderstorm had interfered with the drone signals, and a few drones couldn't be recalled in time. They ended up on the track, causing the crash.
Joseph wasn't someone you could mess with. He didn't buy the story for a second, and even without proof, he made sure to deal with everyone who might have been involved in his own way.
The races were shut down. Everyone was let go, and the clubs went under. In the end, the whole racing world came crashing down.
After Adrian was discharged from the hospital, he went back to the scene of the accident. He walked the entire stretch leading up to the finish line, and about a mile from the finish line, he spotted a few surveillance cameras.
He requested the footage, and in the pouring rain, he saw a girl in a green raincoat, covered in mud, desperately running. She fell again and again, but each time she got back up.
The car behind honked impatiently, but the black Bugatti just sat there at the green light, not moving an inch.
"Mr. Hartley, Mr. Hartley," Elara called out to Adrian, seeing he was lost in thought.
He snapped out of it and turned to glance at Elara, who had just called his name.
"Mr. Hartley, the light's green," she reminded him.
He snapped his attention back to the road and hit the gas.
When they got to the office, it was exactly 8:50. Elara set down her bag and went straight to Adrian's office to make him some coffee. She had just placed the cup on his desk when there was a knock at the door.
Adrian shrugged off his coat, settled into his chair, and took a sip of coffee. "Come in."
The receptionist stepped in. "Mr. Hartley, Mrs. Johnson is here."
Paige was a regular at Anchor Law Firm. She didn't come alone. Two women in tailored business suits followed behind her, each with a metallic name tag pinned to their chest, looking every bit like brand sales consultants.
Paige walked in, and when she spotted Elara, her face broke into a wide smile. "Elara."
Elara hadn't expected to see Justin's mother here, especially so early in the morning. She felt a little dazed. She forced an awkward smile and managed to greet her, "Paige."
"What brings you here?" Adrian asked coolly.
Paige ignored him. "Elara, I'm going shopping later and wanted to get you something, but I don't know your size, so I brought the sales consultants to measure you."
Elara quickly waved her hands. "No, no, Paige, that's way too much, really. You don't have to go to all that trouble."
Adrian put on his glasses and flipped through a thick stack of documents. "I'm slammed this morning. Don't come in here making a fuss."
Paige's smile faded as she shot back at him. "I'm not here for you anyway. Go do your own thing."
Adrian just shook his head and said nothing.
Paige turned back to Elara with a smile. "Elara, that rascal Adrian only ever thinks about cars and buying more of them. He has no idea what girls actually want. I bet he's never even taken you shopping for clothes or bags, right?
"Don't worry, even though I'm a lot older than you, my sense of style is still on point. If I spot something cute later, I'll just buy it for you."
"Really, Paige, you don't have to," Elara stammered, then added awkwardly, "I'm not actually dating Adrian."
Paige knew they weren't together. That was exactly why she was here. She wanted to play matchmaker for Adrian.
Paige made a show of checking the time and then turned to the sales consultants behind her. "Oh, it's already 9:30? Isn't the CLAHUR new collection runway show about to start?"
The SA nodded with a polite smile. "Yes, that's right."
"With all this traffic in the city, we're going to be late. Let's hurry up," Paige urged, glancing at her watch.
Hearing how pressed they were for time, Elara realized she was being put on the spot. It wouldn't be right to keep refusing, so she reluctantly agreed, "Alright, go ahead and measure me."
She could always return everything to Adrian later. She wouldn't give in to wealth.
The sales consultant pulled a measuring tape from her bag and stepped up to take Elara's measurements. She called out each number as another consultant quickly wrote them down.
Adrian kept his head down, eyes on the case files, his face unreadable as he listened to the numbers being recited.
Elara felt a little self-conscious. After all, these measurements were pretty personal.
Paige noticed Elara's discomfort, and that was exactly the effect she was going for. She knew Adrian wouldn't know how to win a girl's heart. So she decided to help him.
Before long, the measurements were done, down to the smallest details. Even her wrists and fingers were measured. "And your shoe size, Ms. Langton?" the consultant asked.
Elara hesitated for a moment but then replied, "6."
"Great. Could you please write down your home address here? We'll need it to deliver the items to you," the consultant said.
Elara thought it wouldn't be right to have the stuff sent to her place, so she wrote down Adrian's address instead. That way, she could just hand everything right back.
Once everything was done, Paige smiled and took Elara's hand. "Elara, I won't keep you from work any longer. When you have time, let Adrian bring you over to my place for a visit."
Elara kept up her polite smile as she walked Paige to the elevator. But the moment the doors slid shut, her smile vanished. She let out a long sigh and turned back.
Right then, she caught sight of Justin leaning against the wall, watching the whole thing like it was his personal entertainment. He was holding two cups of coffee and offered one to her. "Here, peace offering."
Elara gave him a frosty look. "No, thanks." She walked right past him and headed back to work.
When she got back to the office, she found Adrian just sitting there, buried in paperwork, like nothing ever happened. "Mr. Hartley, why didn't you say anything? Did Paige get the wrong idea and think we're together or something?"
Adrian's elegant fingers flipped to the next page. "She knows exactly what she's doing. She just wants to tie you down before you get a chance to run off."
Elara topped off his coffee. "If someone wants to leave, even a cooked duck can fly away. Even marriage isn't a guarantee these days."
Adrian paused, then looked up at Elara. "Maybe money can work wonders."
Elara fell silent. And then she said, "Mr. Hartley, you know you can't force me."
Adrian let out a soft laugh. "Well, actually, I can."
Elara fell silent and returned to her small office.
Adrian didn't have anything special scheduled today. He just stayed at the firm, reviewed some files, signed off on a few finance forms, and caught up with the team leads about recent progress.
So, Elara actually had a chance to slack off for once. She opened WhatsApp and sent a quick message to Julian. [Hey, you good?]
Julian responded, [Still alive.]
[That sounds kinda spooky.]
[Just took a few hits. It's my old man. He's not gonna kill me.]
[So, are your brothers and sisters trying to trip you up?]
[Yeah, they tried, but I'm holding my own for now.]
[Alright, take care.]
[By the way, Insight Investment Bank is looking for a long-term legal counsel. We're thinking about signing with Anchor Law Firm. You got any opinions?]
[Sure, they're the top law firm in all of Veritasiton. You can't go wrong with them. Need Adrian's assistant's contact info? He's super professional.]
[Cool. By the way, do you remember FIGHT, that racing club from back in the day?]
[Of course. Wasn't that the club Noah ran? It was super popular back then. What's up?]
[I bought it.]
Elara was rather surprised. [Wait, WHAT?]
