Adrian leaned back on the sofa, his long fingers twirling a strand of Elara's hair around his fingertips. "What kind of dare is that? I've got one already," he said.
Elara felt the tug at the end of her hair and turned to glare at him.
Victor grinned, "Elara says she's your secretary. If you want to make a move on Elara, shouldn't you ask her what she thinks first?"
"I don't want to," Elara cut in before Adrian could even open his mouth.
One of the girls couldn't help but sneer, "What's a secretary doing acting all high and mighty here? Acting like Adrian actually cares about you or something."
A few other girls, who'd never liked Elara to begin with, jumped in. "Yeah, if you're so great, why are you still clinging to Adrian? Stop pretending you're above it all when you're not fooling anyone."
Elara was just about to fire back when an impatient, cutting voice came from beside her. "I do what I want. Mind your own damn business."
The girls were stunned into silence, all of them staring at the floor, not daring to say another word.
Josie, seeing her friends get put in their place, gave Elara a cold look. "Elara, why don't you just spend the night with Adrian? Name your price, I'll pay. He's never even dated anyone because of me.
"I don't want him to get married and still have no idea what it's like to be with a woman." Her words didn't just make Elara sound like she was for sale; they also made Adrian look pathetic.
Josie had dropped hints more than once that Adrian stayed single for her sake, but Elara knew the real reason was his aversion to physical contact. Turned out it was Josie herself spreading those rumors.
On the surface, Josie sounded like she was being generous, offering to pay for her own fiancé to have some fun, but Elara could tell she was really just trying to provoke her.
Elara felt a rebellious itch. "Since Ms. Heaton doesn't care, why should I?" She glanced at the time. "Alright, let's do it then. It's ten o'clock now, Adrian, so we'll be in a relationship for two hours."
Adrian could see Elara was only agreeing to go against Josie, but he didn't mind at all. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close. He raised an eyebrow. "Only two hours?"
Elara shrugged. "Well, you can blame Victor for only bringing it up today. There are just two hours left, that's all."
The game went on, and the bottle landed on Noah.
"Dare," he said.
It was Elara's turn to give the dare.
Noah glanced up at her, their eyes meeting.
"Noah," Elara said calmly, "I want you to hold me and sing a song."
Adrian and Josie both looked instantly pissed.
Ruby and Victor exchanged a look.
Elara was never one to let a grudge go. She just wanted to get under Josie's skin. She figured Noah wouldn't turn her down, especially since Josie had just made him lose face in front of everyone.
Noah might look quiet on the surface, but deep down, he was wild and showy. Otherwise, he wouldn't be into racing. He wasn't the type to just take things lying down.
Noah's eyes lifted slightly as he studied Elara for a few seconds, and then his lips curled into a faint smile. "Don't I get to pick who I hug?"
Elara's smile deepened. "If you get to pick and you choose Josie, how's that even a dare?"
Noah didn't dwell on it. He just said lightly, "I'm not a good singer."
Elara shot him a meaningful grin. "That's fine. I mostly just wanted an excuse to snag a hug from you."
Noah was caught off guard by how straightforward Elara was. There was a hint of surprise in his eyes. "Wait, you know me?"
"Of course. I'm a fan of yours," Elara replied with a grin.
Noah stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. "Come on, then."
Just as Elara was about to stand up, Adrian's hand clamped down on her shoulder.
Elara rolled her eyes. "Come on, let your girlfriend fangirl a little. Don't be such a jealous boyfriend."
"Are you sure it's just fangirling?" Adrian asked, his voice low.
"What else would it be? Noah's girlfriend is right here. Ms. Heaton isn't as petty as you. Right, Ms. Heaton?" Elara said, turning to Josie.
Josie lit a cigarette, her gaze cold. "Wherever Noah goes, girls flock to him. I'm used to it."
Elara brushed Adrian's hand away. "Did you hear that?"
Adrian didn't try to stop her again. Elara walked up to the table and locked eyes with Noah at close range.
Noah saw she was wearing a short dress and, without a word, shrugged off his jacket and handed it to her. "Here, use this to cover up," he said.
Elara took the jacket and used it to shield her legs, and the next second, Noah swept her up into his arms. There was a subtle scent of flowers on him, mixed with just a trace of tobacco.
Beeman handed the mic to Elara, and she held it up to Noah's lips. The music kicked in, and Noah started to sing.
Elara finally figured out what Noah's fatal flaw was. His singing was truly atrocious. Honestly, listening to him was pure torture. The melody was completely off. He had a perfectly good voice, but still managed to crack every other line.
Elara thought it was hilarious. She tried to hold back her laughter, but in the end, she just couldn't help herself. She looked up at him and caught sight of that faint red beauty mark by his nose. It was actually mesmerizing.
That wickedly handsome face, those soft reddish lips, and a singing voice that could make anyone surrender.
When the first half of the song ended, Noah glanced down at Elara in his arms during the instrumental break, teasing, "Is it really that funny?"
Elara turned her head away, trying to hide her grin. "It's not that it's funny, it's just a little off-key."
"Regretting it now? Too late," Noah said with a smirk. He kept singing, clearly not planning to stop until he'd finished the entire song.
As the song was wrapping up, Elara heard someone call out, "Hey, Adrian, where are you going?" She looked over just in time to catch a shadow slipping out, the door slamming shut with a loud bang.
Elara glanced at where Adrian had been sitting. He was already gone.
"Hey, Josie, you're leaving too?" someone called after her.
Noah glanced over and just caught a glimpse of Josie's blue dress slipping out the door. When the music finally faded out, he set Elara back down on her feet. She smoothed out her dress and then handed his jacket back to Noah.
"Your boss doesn't look too happy. Is he going to dock your pay?" Noah asked, raising an eyebrow.
Elara blinked, taking a second to realize he was talking about Adrian. "Oh, it's fine. He wanted to play, but he can't handle it when things don't go his way."
"So, are you two really together?" Noah asked, his tone casual but his eyes sharp.
Elara suddenly felt on edge. No matter what, Noah was still on Josie's side. "Take a guess," Elara said, flashing him a playful grin.
That flirty, enchanting smile on her face made Noah blank out for a split second.
Elara made her way back over but didn't bother sitting down. She turned to Ruby and said, "I'm heading out. You should get home early, too." She grabbed her bag and left the private room.
Everyone thought she was hurrying out to patch things up with Adrian. But that wasn't the case at all. Elara and Adrian had come together tonight. They only brought one car, and the keys were in her bag.
They'd both had a few drinks, so driving was out of the question. She planned to track Adrian down, hand over the keys, call a driver for him, and then just grab a cab home herself. After all, it was her duty as his secretary.
As Elara walked out of the Aurora Club, she caught sight of Adrian ahead by the curb. She called out, "Adrian!"
Adrian turned his head slightly. He must have heard her, but he didn't answer.
A red convertible pulled up in front of him, and Josie smiled at him from the driver's seat. "Get in."
Adrian paused for a moment. Hearing the sound of high heels getting closer behind him, he stepped forward and opened the car door.
Elara stopped in her tracks as she watched Adrian get into Josie's car.
Josie shot Elara a smug, meaningful smile from a few steps away before the red convertible sped off.
Elara shook her head. 'Guess they're off to reminisce or whatever. And just now, they were putting on a whole act. Pathetic,' she thought, sarcasm dripping from her inner voice.
"How are you getting home?" Noah's voice came from behind her. Elara turned around and met his handsome face. He held a cigarette between his fingers, looking rather indifferent. "I'll get a driver. What about you?"
"I came with Josie, but it looks like she ditched me," Noah said with a shrug.
Elara nodded. "Why not call a cab, then?"
Noah's eyes stayed on her. "My phone's dead. How about I drive you home? I can charge it in your car on the way."
"Where do you live?" Elara asked, hoping she could use the excuse that it wasn't on her way.
"Glory Street," Noah replied.
"Huh? Where on Glory Street exactly?" Elara pressed, sounding a bit reluctant.
"Flowery Apartments," Noah answered casually.
Elara fell silent.

Elara felt the tug at the end of her hair and turned to glare at him.
