The next morning, Elara woke up with a frown, feeling like she had just barely closed her eyes before the alarm went off. She was exhausted. She forced herself to sit up, letting out a long, resentful sigh.
When she got to the office, Elara was half-asleep, her eyelids drooping as she spotted a bag on her desk. It was from Justin, who had thoughtfully bought her breakfast, complete with a sticky note. "Hey, Elara, don't forget to eat breakfast."
Elara ripped off the note, crumpled it up, and tossed it in the trash. She opened the paper bag and saw a sandwich and coffee. No reason to let free food go to waste.
She took a sip of coffee to jolt herself awake, but her brain still wasn't online yet. She just stared blankly at her computer screen, spacing out for a while.
When she figured it was about time, she dragged her exhausted body into the office to make coffee for Adrian. The more she thought about last night, the more she regretted it.
The coffee was ready right at nine, but Adrian still hadn't shown up. Elara frowned, wondering if Adrian overslept. She went back to her office and sat down, her fingers weakly tapping the keyboard as she checked her emails.
She zoned out for a bit, and before she knew it, it was already ten o'clock. She wanted to curse him out. She was almost sure that Adrian overslept.
Her long fingers clacked away on the keyboard as she ranted to Ruby about Adrian's terrible behavior. She was so caught up in her complaints that she didn't even notice Adrian hurrying in from outside. He tapped on her desk. "Two cups of coffee."
Elara lifted her head slowly, just in time to see Adrian pushing open the door to his office, with a woman in a black coat and sunglasses trailing behind him.
Elara got up and walked in, her gaze drawn to the mysterious woman. The woman was bundled up so well that it was hard to see her face, but the bit of her neck that was showing indicated that she was a beauty.
With her back to Elara, the woman took off her sunglasses and lowered her hood as she sat down on the couch. "I'm exhausted. Thank goodness you came to get me, or I'd still be stuck at the airport," she said.
Adrian took off his coat, hung it on the rack, and sat down across from her. "Weren't you supposed to become famous? Why are you back so soon?"
"Don't even mention it. I ran into more pitfalls in that one month than I have in my whole life," the woman replied. From the way she talked, it was obvious they knew each other really well.
Elara poured the coffee beans into the grinder, and the machine buzzed to life. She shot another glance at the woman's back, then quickly looked away. She knew now that Adrian was late because he had gone to pick up that woman.
The mysterious woman glanced curiously around the luxurious office. "Wow, this place is pretty fancy. You sure don't look like some runaway young master down on his luck."
Adrian shot back, "So in your eyes, I'm just a spoiled rich kid who can't do anything without his family's money?"
The woman laughed cheerfully. "No way, I totally believe in you. Back in school, you and Noah were the only ones who ever got good grades."
Elara took out two cups and filled them with the freshly brewed coffee, her face growing colder by the second. Turned out the woman was Adrian's classmate. Hearing their conversation, Elara wondered if the woman was some celebrity.
To think Adrian was all sweet and romantic last night, Elara felt relieved that she didn't give in.
"Did Josie post on Instagram yesterday that she's back in Veritasiton?" the woman asked.
Adrian leaned back lazily on the couch, his gaze shifting away from the frowning Elara. "Yeah, she's back. She went to the welcome party for Logan yesterday."
"Oh, so she's still with Noah?" the woman asked.
Adrian lit a cigarette. "Yeah, they keep breaking up and getting back together."
"How long has it been now? What are they even playing at?" the woman asked.
Adrian gave a wry smile. "It's nothing special, but too much of a waste to just toss aside."
"Miss, your coffee," Elara said as she bent down to set the cup on the coffee table. She stole a glance at the woman's face and was instantly stunned when she found that the woman was actually a famous star, Yvette.
Elara froze on the spot, completely stunned for several seconds. Suddenly realizing how rude she must look, she quickly straightened up and went to fetch Adrian's coffee.
Her heart was pounding. She didn't expect the superstar to be Adrian's classmate. She wondered why Yvette was here. She handed the coffee to Adrian. "Mr. Hartley, if there's nothing else, I'll head out now."
Adrian didn't respond to Elara. He slowly straightened up, took the coffee, and turned to Yvette. "Elara makes great coffee. You should try it."
Yvette's red lips curved into a radiant, graceful smile, so dazzling that Elara found herself a little dazed just watching her. "Well then, I definitely have to give it a try. If you think it's good, it must be pretty amazing."
She took a sip of the coffee, her face lighting up with surprise. "This is Golden Mandheling, right? But it's even richer than the ones I've had before. Is this from the batch from two years ago?"
Adrian's lips curved into a smile. "You really do have a sharp palate."
"Good beans and a good barista. What a combo. This coffee might look simple, but there's a lot of skill behind it. Did you study this, Elara?" Yvette asked.
Yvette really knew how to say the right things, and Elara's gloomy mood eased up a bit. "You're too kind, Ms. Wright. I got certified as a barista while I was studying abroad, so I know a little."
"You're pretty impressive, young lady," Yvette said.
Yvette took a couple more sips before setting down her coffee cup. She turned to Adrian and said, "Last time you said you wanted me to help promote a coffee shop for you. I've got some free time in the next few days.
"Where's the shop? Did you open it yourself, or are you just an investor?"
Adrian's thin lips curved into a slight smile. "It's on Glory Street. It's called Tiffany Café."
Elara's eyelashes fluttered at that.
Yvette nodded. "Just have someone get in touch with my assistant in the next couple of days."
Adrian glanced over at Elara, who was still a bit spaced out on the side. "How about it? Elara, can you be the one to work with superstar Yvette's assistant for the next few days?"
Elara looked totally lost. She pointed at herself. "Me?"
"It's your own coffee shop. Do you really expect me to handle it for you?" Adrian shot back.
At that, Yvette looked up at Elara, a curious look on her face.
Elara finally started to get it, but she still couldn't believe her ears. "Mr. Hartley, you want Yvette to promote my coffee shop?"
Adrian drawled, "What else? If you don't figure out a way to turn things around for that coffee shop, are you just waiting for it to go bankrupt so you can run off with the 150 thousand dollars I loaded onto my membership card?"
Elara fell silent.
