It was a beautiful, sunny morning in Veritasiton. Elara, however, didn't get a good sleep last night.
Ruby was still asleep, but Elara dragged herself out of bed to get ready for work.
With a 150-thousand-dollar salary, Elara had no free time, not even on National Day.
She hadn't replied to the messages Adrian sent last night.
At 23:58, Adrian: [Are you asleep?]
And then at 0:10, Adrian: [Are you coming to work tomorrow?]
After seeing that photo of Adrian and Josie last night, Elara was depressed, and she ignored his messages. Adrian only sent two before giving up. It made her even more annoyed.
She knew she was being a little dramatic, but she thought, 'Isn't it normal when you're in love?'
Her phone buzzed with a new message.
Adrian: [Want me to pick you up?]
Elara replied: [No.]
Adrian responded instantly: [Okay.]
Elara was a little disappointed when she saw the text Adrian sent.
She thought, 'So he will not come? Seriously?
'Damn it! Sure enough, you can't believe a single sweet word the guy says. Trust him and you're setting yourself up for disappointment.'
Elara had been touched that Adrian worked hard yesterday with her recognizance release. But apparently, he still had time to go to the Heaton family's birthday party for his future grandfather and chat with Josie.
Seething, Elara washed her face, brushed her teeth, and had some makeup on before heading out the door.
Elara arrived at the office just in time. When she pushed open the door, she saw that Adrian was already there. Without saying hi to him, she marched over to the coffee machine.
Adrian had heard the sound of high heels clicking outside. When he glanced up at the woman who had just walked in, all he saw was her slender back.
'Did she not see me?' he wondered.
Adrian put his phone down, got up, and walked over. Putting his arms around her waist from behind, he pressed a kiss to the side of her neck. "Morning," he said softly.
Elara tilted her head to dodge him and said flatly, "Good morning, Adrian."
Adrian smiled and said, "So, we are complete strangers after just a few hours apart?"
Elara scoffed inwardly, 'Do you realize what you've done?'
She continued to say indifferently, "No."
Adrian figured she was probably upset about something he didn't know about. Without hesitation, he turned her around and forced her to face him.
But Elara struggled and pushed him away. "Adrian, we're at the office," said Elara fiercely.
Adrian didn't give her a chance to escape. He picked her up quickly and set her down on the table.
Elara sat on the table, face-to-face with him. His eyes were dark, and his features were good. Every time he got serious, it only made him more attractive in Elara's eyes.
But no matter how good-looking he was, it still didn't change the fact that he went to the Heaton family's birthday party for his future grandfather.
Elara thought, 'He promised he'd call off the engagement. Why was he still showing up at their family events?'
"Elara, I've told you I don't like fighting. If something's bugging you, just tell me. If there's a misunderstanding, I'll explain. If I messed up, I'll fix it. Okay?"
Elara wasn't about to let him off the hook that easily. Without another word, she looked at him, face blank and lips sealed.
Adrian's body temperature was higher than Elara's. Elara felt a sudden warmth in her waist when Adrian put his hands around her.
Adrian gently rubbed her soft waist and said, "Trust takes time, you know. We have to build it.
"Life's too short for fighting.
"So, baby, just tell me, what's on your mind?"
Elara wasn't easily swayed, but his sweet words chipped away at her defenses. Elara frowned.
"Did you go to the Heaton family's party yesterday?" she asked.
Adrian answered without hesitation, "Yeah."
"Did you see Josie?"
"Yeah."
"And then you..." Elara started, but before she could finish, there was a knock at the door.
Adrian didn't look away as he called out, "Come in."
Elara was still perched on the table, Adrian's arms around her. To outsiders, they were so close to each other.
She hurriedly shoved him away, hopped down, and smoothed down her skirt that had ridden up when she climbed up there.
The receptionist pushed the door open. "Mr. Hartley, Mr. Wilson from EnjoyTech is here to see you. He doesn't have an appointment, but he said he made a temporary one with you at the Heaton family's party."
Elara's face darkened.
Elara thought, 'So it's Mr. Wilson Julian talked about?'
"Have him wait for me in the conference room," Adrian said.
"Got it," the receptionist replied.
The receptionist closed the door and left. Elara was about to get back to making her coffee when Adrian pulled her back into his arms.
Annoyed, Elara said, "Adrian, I'm making coffee here."
Adrian asked, "Is this about me going to the Heaton family's party? Why don't you ask me directly?"
"I don't want to," Elara muttered.
Adrian couldn't help but laugh. He asked, "Why not?"
"Because I'm afraid I'll hear something I don't want to know," Elara said quietly.
Adrian didn't know what to do. He thought, 'She gets angry easily. What am I gonna do then?
"Josie's father went to school with the police chief downtown. He's the one who helped you out. I had no idea it was Matthew's birthday when I went over there yesterday. Since I was already there and he'd agreed to help, it would've been pretty rude to ignore him, so I stayed at the party for a while," Adrian explained.
"Really? Looked like you and Josie were really hitting it off last night," Elara said, her voice laced with sarcasm.
Adrian had no idea how she knew about this, but he knew she wouldn't say it for no reason, so he decided to clear things up right away.
"The Heatons don't know I called off the engagement yet. Josie hasn't told them either. I just went to remind her about it. That's all," Adrian said.
Elara thought, 'I see.
'He had not made himself clear.
'So the Heatons don't know yet that he called off the engagement.
'At this rate, it will take forever to end this.
'But I can't urge him to do it.
'After all, to outsiders, I'm apathetic about it.
'If I urge him to do it, it would hurt my reputation.
'So I'd better keep it to myself.'
Adrian noticed she still wasn't happy and said softly, "By October, I'll cancel the engagement, I swear."
Elara felt better now. She was happy to know what he would do.
Elara thought, 'How could I resist the sweet words a good-looking guy said.'
Elara felt her heart lift, but she said with her habitual tranquillity, "Suit yourself."
Adrian knew she was just being stubborn, and he said with a smile, "Alright, alright, I'm the one who wants to call off the engagement, the one who can't wait to be your boyfriend."
Elara's lips curled up in a satisfied smile. "Good, as long as you know that," said Elara.
"So, Elara, can you make me a coffee now?" he asked playfully.
Elara grumbled, "I was making it, but you interrupted me."
"Well, I had to. You're mad at me, and I have to cheer you up," he teased.
Elara shot him an annoyed look and said, "Are you trying to say something, Adrian?"
Adrian grinned and said, "Just kidding, Elara."
Elara rolled her eyes and thought, 'As soon as I forgave him, he put on airs again. Call me like this?
'Seriously, when is this game of push-and-pull ever going to end?
'Can't I just be his girlfriend, without any conditions?
'Adrian, just wait to suffer.'
Suddenly, Elara remembered Mr. Wilson was waiting in the conference room. "Aren't you supposed to be heading to the conference room?" she said.
Adrian pressed a kiss to the corner of her lips and said, "Yeah. Once the coffee's ready, bring it to the conference room. And if you're still mad, I'll make it up to you tonight."
Elara thought, 'This man... What am I supposed to do with him?
'Lust brings trouble. Be careful.'
After Adrian left the office, Elara could finally make coffee in peace.
A better mood boosted her motivation.
She had barely poured the coffee beans into the machine when the door was pushed open.
Elara turned her head and saw Justin coming in with some files. She said, "Morning."
But to her surprise, Justin didn't answer. He dropped the files and dashed out of the room in a flash.
Elara frowned, muttering to herself, "Is he blind? Does he not see me standing here?"
