After giving coffee to Adrian in the conference room, Elara bumped into Justin again.
He was discussing a case with another lawyer. When he finished, he turned and almost ran into Elara.
With a smile, Elara asked, "Are you feeling better? Still dizzy?"
Elara was still feeling a bit off today. She felt dizzy and weak. So she asked Justin if he had the same symptoms.
But when Justin saw her, he didn't dare look at her. He hurriedly moved around her and bolted off in another direction.
"Hey, Justin! Did you hear me talking to you?" Elara called after him.
Justin sped up and ran away even faster.
Elara wondered, 'What's wrong with him? Has the poison messed with his brain?'
Elara returned to her office and found dozens of messages Ruby had sent earlier.
Elara slowly scrolled up to read the messages.
Today was National Day. Julian didn't work, so he was still asleep at home.
Ruby was complaining about how crowded the supermarket was. With the National Day discounts, she had to wait in a long line to buy some fruit.
Elara sent a message: [You're better than me. I have to work in the office on National Day.]
Ruby sent a meme to comfort Elara.
Elara then saw Justin's info on the phone and texted him.
Elara: [You acted like you'd seen a ghost when you saw me today. Did the mushroom toxins mess you up again?]
But she didn't hear from him.
'What's wrong with this guy?' Elara thought.
As it was almost noon, Adrian came out of the conference room.
He stopped by Elara's desk and looked down at her. "Have lunch together?" asked Adrian.
Elara stopped what she was doing and said, "Okay. What do you want to eat?"
Adrian hesitated for a moment. "Pretzels?"
Elara looked vague.
Seeing her puzzled look, Adrian asked, "You don't like it?"
"I like it, but Adrian, aren't you the one who never touches high-calorie food?" Elara said.
Pretzels were pure grease and salt. They tasted delicious, but they were basically sugar bombs.
Adrian worked hard to get his body in shape and was very particular about food, so Elara was surprised he'd want to eat something like pretzels.
"I can order something else. Elara, find us a restaurant with good pretzels," Adrian said.
"Fine," Elara said.
Elara felt a bit puzzled. She wondered, 'Why does he want to eat pretzels out of nowhere?
'Since he's not going to eat pretzels, why does he want to go to a place that serves them?'
Elara was curious about it, but she just went along with it.
She knew a restaurant with amazing pretzels, but the place was tiny and the atmosphere was nothing special. Someone like Adrian would never set foot in a place like that. So she had to search for an upscale restaurant instead.
After picking one, she called to make a reservation.
She had barely hung up the phone when Justin showed up again. He pushed open the door and entered Adrian's office. After talking for a bit, he was gone in a flash.
Elara shook her head and thought, 'What is with him? Makes no sense.'
It was almost one o'clock when Adrian called Elara. Elara was sorting through emails outside.
"Elara, come in for a bit," Adrian called.
Elara got up and pushed the door open.
Adrian was looking down at some documents. He waved her over.
Elara walked over to him and said, "What's up, Adrian?"
He took off his glasses and looked up at her. "Did you book the restaurant?" asked Adrian.
Elara nodded. "Yeah, I picked one and made a reservation. It's at 003 Jaffe Road."
Adrian frowned and asked, "The Pavilion of Elegance?"
Elara was surprised. "You've been there before?"
Adrian shook his head. "No, never. I'm done here, let's go."
"Oh, okay," said Elara.
They got to the Pavilion of Elegance around 1:30. The private room was very entertaining, and the soundproofing was good. It was perfect for them to have a quiet meal.
Elara ordered something Adrian liked. When she was about to hand the menu back to the waiter, Adrian signaled for her to pass the menu to him.
Adrian took the menu and added some dishes that he usually avoided, like grilled fish, grilled chicken, and fried chicken.
Hearing what he ordered, Elara thought, 'Is anyone else coming to dine?'
After ordering seven more dishes, Adrian handed the menu back to the waiter.
"Adrian, is anyone else coming to dine with us?" Elara asked.
"Nope, just the two of us," Adrian replied.
"Seriously? All this for us? And it's something you don't have on a regular basis," Elara asked in shock.
"Just want to try something different. You don't like it?" Adrian said.
Actually, Elara liked all these dishes, especially the pretzels and fried chicken. Her dad was good at cooking, but it was quite rare that he made them for her.
"These are all my favorites. Do you order them specially for me?" Elara teased.
Adrian smiled and said, "You like them. That's all that matters."
Just as all the dishes were served, Adrian's phone rang.
"Go ahead, I'll take this call outside the room," he said.
"Oh, okay," said Elara.
Adrian's frown deepened when he saw the one who called. Elara thought, 'It must be something important.'
The call went on for so long that Elara was getting full.
She had another pretzel and then checked the time. Adrian had been on the phone for over twenty minutes.
She couldn't urge him to hurry up, so all she could do was wait.
Suddenly, the door swung open. Elara thought Adrian was back, but she heard the sound of high heels clicking instead.
"Adrian, I heard you were here. How come—" Josie stopped when she saw Elara.
Elara looked up and saw Josie, who stopped mid-sentence. Her smile faded instantly.
"Elara?" Josie asked in surprise.
Elara gave her a cold smile and said, "What a coincidence, Ms. Heaton."
Josie hadn't expected to see Elara here, but instead of leaving, she sat right down in the seat Adrian had been using.
Seeing that Josie wasn't planning to leave, Elara slowly put down the fork and wiped her mouth and hands with a napkin. "So, Ms. Heaton, is there something you want to say?" said Elara.
"I'm gonna come to you in a few days. I heard you and Adrian went to Namukitts, and you had an accident?" Josie said.
"You already know about it, don't you? So why bother asking me again?" Elara replied coolly.
"You're a smart woman, Elara. You should know who tried to hurt Adrian," Josie said.
Elara took a sip of water and said casually, "I don't know. Adrian didn't want me to worry, so he told me it was an accident."
"Do you really buy that?" Josie shot back.
"It doesn't matter whether I buy it. What matters is Adrian doesn't want me to worry, so I'll just take it as an accident. As for everything else, he can handle it himself. I don't want to give him trouble," Elara replied.
Josie laughed, "Are you? But you've already made things harder for him."
Elara lowered her gaze and stayed silent. She knew Josie wanted to say something more.
"Sadie dared to go after Adrian without any concern because she knew our engagement was getting cancelled, and the Heaton family wouldn't be on his side anymore.
"Elara, you almost got him killed, you know?" Josie said, her tone sharp.
