"What are you doing here?" Adrian said as he walked in and saw Josie sitting where he had hitherto sat.
Josie got up slowly, a smile spreading across her face. "I heard you were here, so I came to say hi," said Josie.
"I see," said Adrian.
"I've asked you to come try my food several times, but you always turned me down. How come you're here today?" Josie teased.
Adrian glanced at Elara and said, "Elara chose it. She didn't know it was yours."
"Oh, I see," Josie said.
Adrian looked across the table at Elara and said, "Elara, do you like it?"
A faint smile tugged at Elara's lips. "It tasted sour, but I like it," said Elara.
Elara thought, 'It may have something to do with the boss.'
Josie knew exactly what she wanted to say and gave her a meaningful smile. "Elara, you're young, so you don't know how things work yet. It's not your fault. But if you don't take my advice, you'll regret it sooner or later."
Josie tried to persuade Elara to leave Adrian and told her that if she stayed, she'd end up hurting him.
Elara lowered her gaze, ignoring Josie.
After Josie left, Adrian didn't go back to the same seat as before. Instead, he pulled out a chair and sat right next to Elara.
"What were you talking about?" he asked.
Elara took a sip of her water and said, "She said I'd get you killed."
As she said this, Elara watched Adrian closely.
Adrian picked up a fried chicken calmly and ate it slowly. He looked elegant as always.
"Is what Josie said true? Will I really get you killed?" Elara asked.
Adrian paused for a few seconds. He didn't know how to answer her.
Adrian thought, 'Now that the engagement was off, I have to be more careful. Otherwise, I might end up dying. Last time, I nearly drowned when I went diving.
'Since Sadie knew I called off the engagement, she'd been getting me into trouble. Her tricks were just as ruthless as before. She wanted me to die.
'But it was not Elara's fault.
'She had nothing to do with it. She was completely innocent.
'In fact, if it weren't for Elara, I'd be dead ages ago.
'And I did call off the engagement for her.'
"Of course not. You're an angel. You're supposed to protect me. How could you hurt me?" Adrian teased.
Elara couldn't help but laugh. "Exactly. I'm an angel. I fly around and protect you. I won't hurt you," said Elara.
But for some reason, Elara's heart felt heavier.
Elara thought, 'I knew Adrian well. If Josie was exaggerating or lying, he would have told me the truth. But instead, he downplayed it. That meant the problem of calling off the engagement was huge. Maybe I would really get him killed.
'Last time Adrian went diving, Sadie tampered with his oxygen tank. It almost killed him.
'Sadie didn't accomplish her purpose, and she would definitely find ways to get it done.'
Adrian knew exactly what was going through her mind. He put down his fork and pulled her into his arms.
"Don't worry. Trust me, I'll outdo her," said Adrian.
His breath brushed against Elara's ear, making her feel a little uneasy. Elara said with concern, "Sadie is out to kill you. But what about you?"
Elara thought, 'No matter how strong Adrian was, he would never kill anyone. How could he possibly outdo someone as cold-blooded as Sadie?
'Unless he was willing to risk everything, even his own life.'
"I'm a lawyer. I'm not risking my life fighting her. I'll play tricks with her," Adrian said.
Elara grinned and teased, "You mean magic tricks?"
Adrian replied with a straight face, "No, I mean the law."
"But the Heaton family holds all the real power in politics. Now that you've called off the engagement, how are you supposed to fight back against her?" Elara asked.
Elara thought, 'What if the Heaton family decides to side with Sadie because of the breakup?
'That would do Adrian no favor.'
The more Elara thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. Elara said quickly, "No, this is way too risky. Besides, it all comes down to evidence in court, and Sadie probably knows there's nothing that can be traced back to her.
"Even if you try to take legal action against her, it takes a long time, and what if something happens to you before..."
"If I died, would you be sad?" Adrian interrupted her.
Elara was caught off guard by his question.
She thought, 'Of course I would.
'I don't want you to die.'
Elara gave a little smile and said, "Well, if you want me to be sad, I guess I will."
"But I don't want you to be sad. That's why I won't die," Adrian replied, his tone reassuring.
But even with his promise, Elara couldn't help but worry about him.
"So, Elara, just do whatever you want, okay? Don't worry about me. I want to make you happy instead of giving you trouble," Adrian said softly.
Elara nodded. "Okay."
Elara thought, 'Maybe I don't make him worry or give him any trouble. That's what I can do now.
'As for the rest, I can't be of any help.'
When they finished the dinner, it was already past three in the afternoon. They made their way to the parking lot. Adrian said, "I'll drive."
Elara handed him the car keys.
Adrian didn't take her back to the office. Instead, he drove straight to the Housing Authority.
He knew Elara always kept her ID in the hidden pocket of her bag when she went out.
After filling the belly, Elara dozed off in the car, and Adrian woke her up.
She blinked awake, glanced out the window, and realized they were in front of the Housing Authority.
"Huh? Aren't we going back to the office?" she asked.
Adrian unbuckled his seatbelt, then leaned over to unbuckle hers. "No rush. Let's take care of what I promised you first."
Seeing the Housing Authority, Elara already knew what he was up to.
"It's National Day. No one here is at work today," she said.
Adrian smiled, gently pulled her close, and kissed her on the cheek. "Elara, I'm Adrian. It'll get it done."
Adrian was about to get out of the car when Elara stopped him. "I was just kidding. I don't want your house," said Elara quickly.
"It's too late to back out now," Adrian said with a grin.
He opened the passenger door, but Elara refused to get out.
Adrian had to drag her out of the car and slung her over his shoulder.
He placed his thick arm beneath her skirt to keep her covered.
Adrian carried Elara into the hall and set her down. Then he grabbed her hand and led her toward the counter.
Elara leaned back and tried to pull him. Elara asked, "Are you sure about this?
"Are you really going to transfer that house in Veritasiton Hills, worth hundreds of millions, to me?"
Elara thought, 'We weren't even together, and he is giving it to me?
'Is there a plot?
'No way.
'Who would try to trick someone into receiving a house worth hundreds of millions?'
Adrian kept a firm grip on her and said, "Didn't I say yes back in Hachester?"
"Wait, aren't you afraid I'll just take the house and leave?" Elara teased.
Adrian narrowed his eyes and warned, "Don't you dare."
Elara tried to frighten him. "Why wouldn't I dare?" said Elara.
"Go ahead, but if you're going to leave, take me with you," he shot back.
Elara thought, 'Is he serious? He's still joking around at a time like this?'
"I'm talking about the house," Elara said.
"So am I. If you want to take my house, that's fine, but you have to take me with you. And if you try to dump me, I'll do everything possible to bring you back," Adrian said.
Elara was speechless.
Adrian yanked her bag off her shoulder, took out her ID from the hidden pocket, and handed it to the clerk at the counter.
Then he opened up a folder he'd prepared in advance, pulling out his own ID and a stack of other documents.
The clerk grabbed the documents, input some information into the computer, and stamped all the materials.
Adrian asked Elara to sign. Still in a daze, Elara mechanically scribbled her name down, not even bothering to look at what she was signing.
Adrian paid the tax fee on his phone, then transferred 1.5 million dollars into Elara's account. "Go ahead and operate on your phone," Adrian said to Elara.
Elara stared at her phone in shock, seeing the 1.5 million dollars appear out of nowhere.
"Never mind. I'll do it myself," Adrian said.
The price of the house was very high, so they needed to pay a big tax bill. At the last step, Adrian handed the phone to Elara.
"Password," he said.
Elara took the phone, entered her password, and paid the tax fee.
Soon, a payment notification popped up on her phone.
[At 15:58:18 on October 2nd, $1.2 billion was debited from your account. Available balance: ...]
Elara's eyes widened in shock. She thought, 'The user tax is enough to buy me a new house.'
Then, a freshly printed, red deed to the house was handed to her.
Still in a daze, Elara walked out of the Housing Authority with the deed in her arms.
Amused, Adrian watched her and stopped.
"Miss Langton, when are you moving to the house below mine?" he asked with a grin.

Josie got up slowly, a smile spreading across her face. "I heard you were here, so I came to say hi," said Josie.
