Adrian turned around, took a long stride, and quickly walked out of the hall.
Elara was carried into the passenger seat of his black McLaren. He even buckled her seatbelt for her.
"Why are you here?" she finally asked once they left the hall.
Adrian didn't answer.
After getting in the car, he no longer looked like the man from the party. His deep eyes stared straight ahead, cold and sharp enough to scare anyone.
He stepped on the gas. The roar of the engine was loud and restless, like a storm about to hit.
On Veritasiton Avenue, Adrian's McLaren shot forward like an arrow.
Elara thought he was taking her home. But soon she realized the car wasn't heading toward Glory Street. She turned and asked, "Where are you taking me?"
Adrian still said nothing. He pressed the gas even harder. The car sped up, and the anger on his face grew stronger.
Elara frowned. "I'm soaked. Take me home."
He stepped on the gas again. Caught off guard, Elara's thin body slammed into the seat.
She knew Adrian wasn't someone to mess with, so she stopped talking.
The car entered Veritasiton Hills, the most luxurious neighborhood in the city—Adrian's home.
Elara hadn't expected him to bring her here.
The McLaren drove into an underground garage filled with luxury cars and pulled into Adrian's private parking spot.
He had a lot of cars—more than a dozen lined up with matching plates. And this wasn't even his only place in Veritasiton.
Elara spotted Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bugattis, Koenigseggs, Paganis, and more. Only two of them were luxury business cars. The rest were all high-end racing models. He clearly loved speed.
Elara looked away. The car slid into an empty spot, and the door opened. Adrian unbuckled her seatbelt.
Just as she started to step out, before her foot touched the ground, Adrian scooped her up again.
The McLaren sat low, and Adrian was tall. When he lifted her, he used a bit too much force. Elara lost her balance and instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck to avoid falling.
He smelled faintly of a woodsy men's cologne. His white shirt was damp where she'd soaked it. The top button was undone, and her cold wrist was resting against his warm neck.
By late September, Veritasiton had already started to cool down. Elara, completely soaked, was freezing.
There had been heat in the car. But once they got out and into the elevator, the chill started to sink in.
Elara pressed her cold cheek against Adrian's burning chest. "It's so cold."
Adrian's face didn't show any emotion—like a leopard stripped of feeling, sharp and cold.
Seeing the warmth from the party was gone, Elara slowly let go of his neck. "Put me down. I can walk."
She struggled a bit, but Adrian didn't let go. He still didn't say a word.
After unlocking the metal double doors with his fingerprint, Adrian walked straight into the bedroom bathroom. He set Elara down on the white porcelain tub seat, adjusted the shower to a good temperature, and filled the tub with water.
"Clean yourself up," he said coldly, then walked out of the bathroom.
Elara heard the door close behind him. She stood up and took off her champagne-soaked knit dress.
She was so cold her whole body had turned pale. She sank into the hot water, and the warmth wrapped around her instantly.
She felt tired, resting back in the tub and staring up at the white light above her, lost in thought.
The warm water washed away the strong smell of champagne from her skin. She got up, washed her hair, and rinsed off completely.
There were no clean clothes, so she grabbed a bathrobe from the cabinet. Since it belonged to Adrian, it was way too big. The sleeves hung past her hands, and the hem almost touched her calves.
She tied the belt around her waist and grabbed a towel to dry her hair, then stepped out of the bathroom. She had only taken a few steps when she saw Adrian, freshly showered, walking into the bedroom from another room.
His wet hair was still dripping. He wore a white robe too, but it fit him a lot better.
"Can you have someone bring me a change of clothes?" Elara asked. After all, she still had to head back later, and there was no way she could go out dressed like this.
Adrian glanced at her, then left the bedroom. When he returned, he was holding a first aid kit.
He sat on the couch and spoke in the same cold tone. "Come here."
Earlier, Elara had taken off the bandages wrapped at the hotel while soaking in the tub. Now, her wounds had started bleeding again. So she walked over slowly and sat down on the couch.
When she saw Adrian reaching for the gauze, clearly about to dress her wounds, she quickly tried to grab it from him. "I can do it myself."
Adrian pushed her hand away and pressed the gauze, already soaked in medicine, to her neck.
Elara frowned and let out a sharp breath. The medicine stung.
Then he bandaged her wrist.
"Thanks," Elara said.
Adrian slowly packed up the first aid kit and set it aside. Then he picked up a cigarette from the table, lit it, and took a drag.
But he stayed silent.
Since she couldn't leave anyway, Elara decided to talk to him properly. She looked down and said, "Thanks for helping me today. I didn't think you'd show up. I owe you big."
Adrian let out a cold laugh and finally spoke. "So, how do you plan to pay me back?"
Elara really didn't know how. He didn't need money, and he didn't want her either.
In the end, she said, "Didn't you fire Zoe? I could return the pay Susan gave me and work for free as your assistant until she comes back."
After all, he was picky about his secretaries. It'd probably be hard to find someone new so soon. Doing this might solve a small problem for him. Elara thought it made sense.
But Adrian didn't match his words with his actions again. "Ms. Langton, just a few hours ago, I told you clearly at Hachester—if you went to Alex's engagement party, don't expect to come back to me."
Elara sighed. She figured he still wasn't satisfied with her and decided to let him be.
"Then I won't show up in front of you again. I'll stay out of your way," she said. "That should cover what you did for me today."
With that, Elara got up from the couch. "Adrian, where's my phone? I'll ask Ruby to pick me up."
Adrian didn't move. She searched around and found her phone in the pocket of his suit pants on the couch. She opened Ruby's WhatsApp and got ready to make a voice call.
But before she could dial, a strong force yanked her back. Caught off guard, Elara fell onto the couch.
Adrian came down over her, eyes full of anger. "That's how you thank me?"
