Elara was about to step aside and hide, but Adrian had already opened the door.
She only relaxed when she heard Victor's voice.
Victor's jaw dropped when he saw Elara in a bathrobe. He thought, 'Wait, isn't Adrian the guy who can't even touch women? How did he get Elara already? I haven't even won Ruby over yet.'
That thought made him even more annoyed. He threw the bag of food at Adrian. "Don't call me for this kind of stuff again. This is the last time."
With that, he turned and stormed off.
Victor had thought Adrian had been mistreated by Elara and wanted company. He had left Ruby at home and rushed over here, only to find Adrian and Elara cozy together. Meanwhile, no matter what he did, things with Ruby still hadn't moved forward.
He decided to check on Ruby again. Maybe she was still awake.
Adrian shut the door, took out the warm food from the bag, and laid it on the dining table. Then he opened a bottle of Lafite from '82.
A few minutes later, Elara came out of the bedroom. Adrian noticed she had helped herself to one of his white shirts.
That was all she had on. The way she wore it, oversized and just barely covering her, sent a wave of heat through him. Adrian told himself she was doing it on purpose. She had to be. No one looked like that by accident.
"Let's eat," he said, keeping his voice cool despite the fire rising in his chest.
"Oh." Elara hadn't expected him to actually ask Victor to bring food.
She was starving. So for now, she dropped the idea of leaving and sat down at the table. Adrian poured her a glass of wine. She figured being spoiled by Adrian once in a while wasn't the worst thing.
There were five dishes and one soup.
Elara glanced at the label on the food bag. [No. 9 Restaurant].
She'd never eaten from there before, but the food tasted great. Just as expected—rich guys like Adrian would never settle for anything less than the best.
After one glass of wine, her body felt warm. Adrian silently cleaned up the table, and Elara watched him out of the corner of her eye, saying nothing.
After they finished eating, Elara checked the dryer. It still had over an hour left, but she didn't feel like waiting anymore. She decided to just take a cab home wearing Adrian's white shirt.
As she pulled her damp clothes from the machine, she said, "Thanks for the food, Adrian. It's already past two. I should head back. This shirt's last year's style, right? You probably haven't worn it in a while. Want me to pay you for it?"
After all, she'd been Adrian's assistant before—she knew he never wore anything outdated. Even if most shirts looked the same, Adrian had money to burn and always chased the newest thing.
Adrian glanced at her long legs sticking out from under the shirt, then grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her into the bedroom—then into the walk-in closet.
Elara thought he was up to something and twisted her body to escape. "Adrian, let's not... let's not have that kind of relationship again. It's just not right."
But Adrian simply reached into the closet, pulled out a bag, and handed it to her.
"What kind of relationship? What's not right about it?" he said, raising an eyebrow.
Elara peeked inside the bag. It was women's clothing. She hesitated, then took the bag and looked through it. There was a white dress and a thick coat.
Realizing she'd misunderstood, she felt a little awkward. "Is this... for me?"
Adrian didn't answer. He just stepped out of the closet, giving her space to change.
Inside the bag, Elara even found underwear and a bra. She put everything on—it all fit perfectly.
Once she was dressed, she walked out to find Adrian sitting on the sofa, smoking. She looked at him and asked, "Everything fits me exactly. Did you buy these just for me?"
Adrian tapped the ash from his cigarette, twirling a car key in his other hand. "You really gotta stop thinking the world revolves around you."
"Oh? Then why would you just happen to have this outfit in your closet?" she asked.
"It came free when I ordered a custom suit," Adrian said.
Elara raised an eyebrow. "Didn't know tailored suits came with bonus outfits now."
Adrian stood up and tossed her the car key. "Drive my car home. Tomorrow morning, 9 a.m. sharp—I want a cup of your coffee waiting on my desk."
Elara stared at the keys in her hand. "What does that mean?"
Adrian took off his robe right in front of her. "Exactly what it sounds like."
Elara cursed under her breath and quickly shut her eyes. "Are you serious right now? I'm still here—can you not?"
"What's the big deal? It's not like you haven't seen me naked before," he said.
Adrian knew she was into his body. He stepped closer and pried open her eyelid with a finger. "Didn't you used to sneak touches? And now you're shy?"
Elara never let Adrian touch her, not anywhere. But she herself would always "accidentally" brush his abs, lean against his chest, sometimes even nibble at his throat. Adrian thought she was the most two-faced woman he'd ever met.
"Shut up," Elara muttered.
Adrian chuckled low. "Just don't be late tomorrow, all right?"
Elara peeked out, looking only at his face. "So... you're letting me be your assistant again? Susan won't lose her job?"
"You owe me big time," Adrian said. "You won't let me kiss you, won't let me touch you. If I don't squeeze you a little in the office, how's that fair?"
Elara let out a breath of relief. "Fine. Squeeze all you want at work."
As long as he didn't make her pay with her body—everything else was fine.
"This car key—what is it for?" Elara asked.
"It comes with the job," Adrian said as he climbed into bed and finally pulled the blanket over himself.
Elara waved her hand. "No need. Julian already lent me a car."
Adrian picked up his phone, scrolling through messages and replying to a few while saying, "If my personal assistant has to borrow a car from someone else, it makes me look bad."
"It's not like that. I can buy my own car," Elara said.
"You can?" Adrian sounded skeptical.
Elara looked at the Bugatti key in her hand and gave an awkward smile. "Of course, I meant a normal car. Who drives a multi-million-dollar car to work as a secretary?"
Even Susan's Panamera only cost just over 300 thousand dollars.
Adrian raised a brow. "That's the Bugatti I picked up last week. You sure you don't want it?"
If it was a recent purchase, knowing how much Adrian loved his cars, it definitely wasn't an old model.
Elara asked in a small voice, "Is it a Divo?"
"Mm-hmm." Adrian nodded.
Elara was stunned. She never thought Adrian would hand over a nearly 300-million-dollar car so easily.
Now she really had to say no. She started speaking so fast she almost stumbled over her words. "No way. That car is worth more than my life. Adrian, your car is better off with you."
"Don't like it? What about the LaFerrari I bought last month?" Adrian asked.
"No," Elara sighed inwardly. "I'll just buy a little commuter car. Your cars are too much."
"Still not happy? Then I'll take you to pick out a new one sometime," he added.
Elara felt her scalp tingle. "No, that's not what I meant. I mean, I'll buy something cheap on my own."
"I know a few dealership owners," Adrian said. "We'll go sometime. It's settled."
Elara didn't know what else to say. She knew Adrian never listened to reason—and now he was also her boss. So she just nodded.
In the end, Elara drove the Bugatti home.
The nearly 300-million-dollar supercar pulled into the underground garage of Flowery Apartments, standing out sharply next to the other cars worth just a few million.
Elara's heart was racing. She wondered if Adrian was setting her up. If she scratched that car, even repainting it might cost her everything she had.
She got out carefully and had just locked the door when her phone buzzed with a new message.
Adrian: [Bring your ID tomorrow. I mentioned before in Hachester that I have another house in Veritasiton Hills. We'll do the transfer paperwork tomorrow.]
