I came back to my senses, pursed my lips, and said to York, "I want to give up on the lawsuit against Gemma."
York was stunned. He narrowed his eyes as he looked at me meaningfully, "Are you pitying a criminal who hurt you? Natalia, are you crazy?"
I frowned and said in a low voice, "She saved my life on the uninhabited island."
If Gemma hadn't arrived in time, I would have been bitten to death by that poisonous snake. I wanted to help her.
"I have to return the favor I owe her." I stared at York and expressed my stance, "My mind is very clear now. I'm ready to give up on the lawsuit against Gemma."
"Even if you give up, the police have the right to prosecute her." York's expression was calm. "This is beyond your ability."
"So, I need you to help me," I told him solemnly.
York raised his eyebrows at that. "What makes you think I'll help you?"
"If you don't help me, I'll tell Mom and Dad that you have threatened me previously." I frowned. This was my last resort. I'd give York a taste of his own medicine.
I pretended to be calm and threatened him, "Even if I don't have any evidence, Dad and Mom will be wary of you after hearing about it.
"I remember you saying the Smith family's investigation methods are impressive. Your motives and the things you want to do might be exposed."
York's expression didn't change the entire time. His bright eyes were still smiling.
As if he was watching a good show, York patiently waited for me to finish threatening him. Then, he laughed, "You're already spoiled, aren't you?"
I was stunned, not understanding what he meant. Did I only dare to threaten him because Shirley doted on me?
"Okay, I'll help you," York said helplessly. He glanced at me and smiled. "I hope you won't regret it."
The next day, I was allowed to leave the hospital and return to the Smith family.
This was the first time Benedict had left the sanatorium. Perhaps it was because of the blood ties, but he had a natural sense of kinship with the Smith family.
According to Shirley, Benedict had been close to her since the first day he was brought back.
"After Benedict comes back, I don't have to worry about your mother being bored anymore." Ben looked at Shirley lovingly and smiled.
Shirley did not like to gather with the rich ladies in Enschester. Ben was afraid she would be bored alone at home when he was at work.
I teased, "Mom, if you continue to hug Benedict all the time, Dad will be jealous."
As soon as I finished speaking, I took Benedict into my arms and rubbed my nose against his face affectionately, enjoying the long-lost happiness.
The days in the Smith family were quiet and peaceful.
One day, I was sunbathing in the garden with Benedict when York found me.
"I've bailed Gemma out. After she found out you saved her, she said she wanted to see you." York gave me an address. It was the place where Gemma was staying.
That afternoon, I drove to meet Gemma.
When I arrived, I realized the home York had mentioned was a basement that was less than 108 square feet. Other than a tattered bed, there was no other furniture in the room.
Gemma's hair was disheveled. She seemed to have aged ten years after recovering from a serious illness. Her haggard face made people sigh.
"Ms. Hinton, thanks for coming to see me." Gemma coughed twice and said to me sincerely.
