I said calmly, "I saved you because you saved me. We are even now. You don't have to thank me."
Gemma smiled. "Ms. Hinton, I remember when we were on the island, you said I was kind. I'll say this back to you now. In my short twenty years of life, I've experienced darkness and bad things. You're the only good person I've met so far."
I recalled Gemma's life experience and couldn't help but sigh. Since I had pulled her out of the darkness, I wanted to do more for her.
I pondered for a moment and said to Gemma, "The promise I made to you back then still stands. If you want to move to another city and start anew, I can do whatever I can to help."
When Gemma heard that, she suddenly looked up, and I saw her eyes were red. In the next second, she suddenly got up and fell to her knees.
Gemma said in a trembling voice, "Ms. Hinton, thanks. If you don't mind, I hope to stay and work for you."
Stunned, I helped her get up and said happily, "Don't be silly. I don't need you to devote yourself to me. But I can lend you some money. You can do some business or find a job."
Gemma shook her head and said sincerely, "I don't need your money. I can be a servant in the Smith family. I want a chance to atone for my sins."
"I don't need you as a servant." I helped her back onto the bed.
The damp and dark basement wasn't a good place to stay. I thought about it and comforted her. "How about this? If you want to stay in Enschester, I'll find a new place for you. As for the rest, we'll talk about it after you recover."
Gemma nodded and thanked me profusely.
After coming out of the basement, I called Raelynn, asking her to find a single apartment for me. "I need a safe place for a girl to live alone."
Thinking of Forrest who was still on the loose, I felt a lingering fear and specially reminded Raelynn.
Raelynn was efficient and found a suitable room that night. I had the Smith family's chauffeur take Gemma to the apartment.
Late at night, I put Benedict to bed. After yawning, I went to the bathroom to take a shower.
When I came out, I realized I had received more than a dozen missed calls from Rose.
Shocked, I quickly called back. "Rose, what happened?"
"Aiden killed himself." Rose's voice was hoarse.
My heart jumped into my throat. "When did this happen? How's Aiden doing now?"
On the other end of the line, there was a faint sound of crying.
Rose said in a deep voice, "He's still being resuscitated."
After hanging up, I drove to the hospital in no time.
Outside the resuscitation room, the surgical lights were on. Rose's parents and Aiden's parents were both there.
I quickly walked forward. When Rose saw me, her eyes were filled with uncontrollable anger.
Before I could say anything, she suddenly raised her hand and slapped me hard. "Natalia, it's all your fault! You're the one who got Aiden into this. You're the one to blame!"
Tears streamed down her face as she spoke. Rose had always been a gentle and demure lady. I had never seen her so furious and was stunned for a moment.
My ears were ringing and my face was burning. Rose's mouth was opening and closing. She was saying something to me, but I couldn't hear a word.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Aiden's parents staring at me with extreme hatred. It was as if I had become an eternal sinner.
Bang! The lights in the resuscitation room went out. At the same time, the door was suddenly pushed open from the inside.
