"Don't just serve me food." Shirley also picked up some okra for Ben with the serving fork. She lowered her eyes and ate, not looking at Ben anymore.
Ben was already very happy to receive her response. He nodded repeatedly and ate the cold okra.
At the dining table, it was inevitable to chat a little. Ben asked about York's and my work and even gave us some pointers.
"It's rare for us to gather together for a meal. Don't always talk about work," Shirley said. "If it weren't for the fact that Quinn is busy with work, he would have come tonight."
When York heard this, he took the initiative to say, "I bumped into Quinn today."
I was a little surprised. I looked at York curiously and asked, "Where did you meet him?"
York replied, "I wasn't busy with work this morning, so I went to the care home to see Grandma. Just as I was about to leave the care home, I bumped into Quinn."
After saying that, he looked at me curiously. "Natalia, you shouldn't be so surprised that he went to the care home, right? I thought he was also going to visit Grandma. Didn't he tell you?"
If Quinn was going to visit Grandma, he would definitely tell me.
Before I could respond, Shirley voiced out her guess, "The care home where your grandmother lives is very famous in the industry. Perhaps the client of Quinn also lives there. Perhaps he's going to visit him."
"That's possible." York nodded with a half-smile.
After the meal, Ben wanted to bring Benedict to see the gifts prepared in the toy room.
As an uncle, York also doted on Benedict. He revealed a rare gentle smile and held Benedict's hand as they walked over.
Benedict was very excited about the room filled with toys and could not stop giggling.
"Mom, Dad and York are playing with Benedict. Why don't I accompany you for a walk in the garden?" I suggested.
Shirley agreed. "I'll show you the rosemary I planted. It's especially beautiful."
I took Shirley's hand and walked toward the garden.
There were not many flowers outdoors, but they were well cultivated. There were also many green flowers in the glass greenhouse. They were all more delicate. The rosemary planted by Shirley was beside the wooden corridor in front of the glass greenhouse.
Flower vines grew around the long corridor. They were lush and filled with flowers of all colors. It was very lively.
"Mom, these flowers are so beautiful. Won't you feel better when you see the flowers you personally cultivated bloom?" I carefully probed Shirley.
"Natalia, I know what you want to ask." Shirley held my hand and gently patted the back of my hand. "I've already talked to your father. Now that things have come to this, he's admitted his mistake and chose to return to our family. We have to live our life."
She sighed silently and forced a smile at me. "Don't worry. I am not as fragile as you think."
"Bernie has already resigned for a period of time. Mom, you should know that, right?" I asked Shirley.
Shirley nodded. "Yes, I know."
I asked, "Mom, have you forgiven Dad?"
Shirley stopped in her tracks and stopped beside the pillar in the corridor. Coincidentally, some withered petals fell down, and Shirley reached out to catch them in her palm.
"Natalia, your father and I are already middle-aged. We've lived together for half our lives and had you and York. There's no need to talk about forgiveness." Shirley looked at the wilting petals sadly.
She added, "Your father dealt with it like this and even apologized to me. He's already showing me enough respect. I can't possibly get a divorce because of this."
When I heard what Shirley said, my heart ached for her.
