Just as I had expected, Shirley coldly rejected Ben's offer to stay. "There's no need." Shirley's face was still filled with sadness.
She smiled self-deprecatingly at Ben. "You should go back to your work. You never had time to accompany me before, and there's even less need for it now." The word "before" was emphasized.
York and I weren't the only ones who understood what Shirley meant by "before".
The corners of Ben's mouth twitched as he nodded stiffly. "Alright, take good care of yourself."
After breakfast, Shirley went to the room that Mary used to stay in to pack Mary's belongings. I followed her, wanting to accompany her for a while more.
"Natalia, you've been with me for a day and a night. You should go back early today." Shirley took the initiative to hold my hand and patted it meaningfully.
I said, "Mom, I just want to spend more time with you."
Shirley smiled. "I know how you feel, but you have Benedict and work. You can't leave everything behind to accompany me. Besides, I'll be back after staying here for a while."
Since she had said so, I did not stay any longer. After hugging Shirley, I bid her farewell and left the Lee family in Sea City.
I returned to Enschester at noon. It was a weekday, and Quinn was obviously not at home.
"Mommy," Benedict called me excitedly and ran over with his short legs.
I picked up Benedict and played with his toys for a while. The maid knew that I wouldn't be going to the office today and specially prepared a sumptuous lunch.
After lunch, I coaxed Benedict to sleep and went back to my room to catch up on sleep. I didn't sleep at all last night and was extremely sleepy at this moment. Not long after, I fell asleep.
Just as I was about to fall asleep, I was woken up by the sudden ringtone of my phone. In a daze, I reached out to touch the phone on the bedside table. The caller ID was Raelynn.
I sat up with a start. Raelynn knew that I had gone to Sea City. Unless there was an emergency, she would not disturb me.
"Raelynn, what happened?" I asked directly.
"Ms. Hinton, the Dazzling Project is in trouble!" Raelynn's tone was exceptionally solemn. Her usual calmness seemed to have been sucked away. "Ms. Hinton, if you're still in Sea City, can you..."
"I'm already back," I interrupted, quickly regaining my composure despite my shock.
Then, I took the initiative to say, "Give me 15 minutes. I'll rush to the scene of the Dazzling Project. Take the relevant information and rush over. I'll see you there."
"Alright," Raelynn quickly agreed.
Fifteen minutes later, I arrived at the site of the Dazzling Project. The project site, which should have been lively, seemed especially deserted at this moment. I didn't know where the workers had gone.
Just as I was feeling puzzled, I saw Raelynn waiting downstairs.
"Ms. Hinton!" Raelynn rushed toward me.
I asked her, "Why don't I see any workers at the construction site?"
Raelynn explained to me anxiously, "Ms. Hinton, the construction site of the Dazzling Project has been forced to stop."
"Forced to stop work?" I looked at Raelynn in disbelief. "What's the reason? Wasn't everything fine before I left?"
Raelynn quickly replied, "Because the building materials that were supposed to arrive yesterday still haven't arrived today."
I found it strange and asked, "I had already signed the procurement contract for the building materials for the Dazzling Project. How come they haven't been delivered yet?"
"Ms. Hinton, are you sure?" Raelynn explained. "The building materials were not delivered yesterday. I checked the file contract immediately, but I couldn't find the contract you signed."
"How is this possible?" I didn't expect such an outcome.
Coincidentally, Jess had also arrived at the bleak construction site. When he found out about the situation, his face was also filled with worry.
"Can you find any other suppliers now?" Raelynn asked Jess for confirmation.
Jess frowned. He looked at me and said in a low voice, "The building materials ordered for the Dazzling Project are specific overseas products, with very high requirements for impact resistance, material, texture, density, strength-to-weight ratio, and so forth. If we have to reorder now, it means that the construction site would need to stop work for at least another half a month!"
