I immediately expressed my longing for Shirley over the phone.
"Alright, I miss Benedict too. Then come over early and have afternoon tea with me. You can go back after dinner."
Thus, that afternoon, I drove Benedict and the caregiver back to the Smith family.
Unexpectedly, York was at home at this time. He took the initiative to greet me and even asked the caregiver to bring Benedict in to take a look at the small gift he had prepared.
After the caregiver brought Benedict in, I chatted with York for a while. I said, "I thought you'd be working at the office."
York smiled, "I went to Sea City to pick up Mom. Of course, I'm at home."
"That's true. In this family, the only person Mom can trust is you." I glanced at York with a faint smile.
York was definitely not a kind person. Ben had lost Shirley's trust. It was also because Quinn was suspected to be related to Mary's death that Shirley was more or less distant from me.
York understood what I meant. He frowned and warned me, "Mom doesn't know the details of the Dazzling Project yet. She doesn't care about the outside world in Sea City. She prays for Grandma, plants flowers, and raises fish every day. You'd better not bother her with the Madden family's affairs. Do you understand?"
He thought that I had ulterior motives for coming back this time.
I retorted, "Then you're overthinking. I only returned to the Smith family to visit my beloved mother."
"That better be the case," York took the initiative to say. "Dad has been busy with business recently and often works overtime. He won't be back at night. Stay with Mom more."
"You don't have to teach me that!" I brushed past York and couldn't be bothered to talk to him.
As a mother, I could empathize with Shirley's emotional changes. The death of Mary was a huge blow to Shirley. Moreover, Mary had been angered to death by Ben's affair.
I didn't know if Ben's so-called working overtime was true or not. I guessed that he didn't dare to face Shirley.
Fortunately, I had brought Benedict with me. When Shirley was having coffee in the afternoon, she chatted and laughed with Benedict. She even took the initiative to feed Benedict chestnut cake.
It was rare for me to see Shirley smile, and I felt a lot more relaxed.
Benedict was too excited in the afternoon. He was so sleepy that he fell asleep at dinner.
I asked the caregiver to take care of Benedict, so Shirley and I were the only ones left at the dinner table.
"York went to Sea City to pick me up early and delayed some work. He has to go back to Maple Media to work overtime tonight. It's just the two of us tonight," Shirley said to me with a smile.
I nodded and served Shirley her favorite dishes. "Mom, it's good that they're not around. We can talk heart to heart. You've lost a lot of weight recently. Eat more."
"Alright, you eat too," replied Shirley.
This meal was very quiet. Shirley was silent most of the time. I only felt exceptionally sad in my heart.
After the meal, Shirley asked me how Benedict was doing. "It's Benedict's second birthday in a few days, right? I will help you organize it and celebrate Benedict's birthday. When your grandmother was around, she loved Benedict the most." Shirley fell silent again after saying this.
I quickly replied, "Benedict is still young. There's no need to pay so much attention to his birthday. I'll bring Benedict back, and we can just have a family meal together."
"Yes, that's fine too." Shirley did not insist.
