I quickly dialed York again.
Shirley wasn't just anyone—she was the only daughter of the powerful Lee family and the wife of the man who ran Maple Media.
If word got out that she was missing, the media would swarm, and we couldn't afford that kind of attention.
But I knew I had to tell York before making any moves.
The phone rang, and before I could speak, someone on the other end urgently told York, "Mr. Smith, I've got something!"
It was one of York's assistants.
"What did you find?" I asked, my heart racing.
York, still in the dark, replied in a low voice, "Come home now. We'll talk in person."
After hanging up the phone, I sped back to the Smith family home, practically running through the door as soon as I arrived.
"York, has Mom come back yet?" I asked, rushing in without even taking a second to catch my breath.
York and his assistant were sitting in the living room, a laptop open on the coffee table, with a pile of printed phone records. The one that stood out the most was the one marked in bright highlighter.
"Natalia, sit down," York said, waving me over. "My assistant's found something."
I pushed down the growing anxiety in my chest and sank into the seat beside him.
He handed me the phone record with the highlighted number and pointed at it. "Based on the time Mom left, we can confirm that she was called out by this number."
I immediately dialed the 11-digit number into my phone, but the call wouldn't go through. The phone was off.
York shot me a look. "Don't bother. It's not picking up. But according to the data, this number belongs to someone named Jenny Lambert."
"Jenny Lambert?" The name sounded completely foreign to me. I didn't recognize it at all.
I looked at York, confused. "Do you know her?"
Before York could respond, the housekeeper spoke up from the corner. "Young master, Jenny used to be a housekeeper for the Smith family. You might remember her."
A housekeeper from the Smith family?
I was taken aback, struggling to process the information. I turned to York, my eyes wide.
York furrowed his brow as if the memory was just starting to come back. "I remember now. She worked for us for about five or six years."
"That's right," the housekeeper confirmed. "But Jenny suddenly quit two years ago, for reasons I don't know."
She pulled out her phone and showed us Jenny's old landline number from her hometown. "I'm not sure if this will help, but here's the number."
York nodded, then switched the phone to speaker mode before dialing the landline.
I stared at the screen, my stomach knotting. After a few rings, an error message flashed on the screen—a number no longer in service. I couldn't hold back anymore. I shot York a frustrated look. "No, we can't just sit around waiting like this."
The lead we had was a dead end, and my worry for Shirley was only growing.
After hanging up, York stood up and said, "We've tracked down Jenny's address in Enschester. I'm going to head there with a team to check it out."
I immediately nodded in agreement.
"Alright, I'll go with you," I said, making up my mind on the spot.
York and I left the Smith family home, giving instructions to the housekeepers not to mention Shirley's disappearance to anyone just yet.
"How long until Dad lands?" I asked, trying to break the tense silence.
York was adjusting his seatbelt when I asked. He frowned slightly. "With over ten hours of flight time, he won't be landing until tomorrow."
"Why would he have to travel now? Mom didn't say anything about a trip when I talked to her last night."
