"I don't know. They haven't been talking much lately," York sighed, sounding helpless.
I guessed that Shirley hadn't had a chance to tell York about her thoughts on divorce yet.
York was staying at the Smith family house, caught between his parents. It had to be hard for him, too.
He rubbed his temples, and I couldn't help but glance at him with concern. "You don't look so good. Maybe you should take care of yourself a little more."
Before I could finish, my phone rang, cutting me off.
York frowned. "Who's calling?"
When I saw the number "911" on the screen, my heart skipped a beat. I didn't even care to answer York as I quickly hit "accept" and put the phone on speaker.
"Hello, this is Ashvale Town Police Department in Ardenport. Are you a family member of Shirley Smith?" The officer's voice came through clearly, filling the car with a heavy tension.
York slammed on the brakes the second he heard the words.
My heart leaped in my chest, and I heard him mutter, "Jenny's address is in Ardenport, Ashvale Town!"
Before I could respond, the officer continued, "Is Shirley missing?"
York's face went ashen in an instant.
I snapped back into focus and answered quickly, "I'm Shirley's daughter. My mom left this morning after receiving a call from Jenny, and she hasn't returned."
I briefly explained the details we'd uncovered so far.
"The suspect, Jenny, has been arrested. Please bring your identification and head to the Ashvale Town Police Department in Ardenport to assist with the investigation," the officer said, his voice grave.
York and I exchanged a glance. I quickly nodded.
After hanging up, I should've felt relieved, but instead, a cold sweat started to break out across my skin.
"Jenny's been arrested. Mom should be okay, right?" I said, more to myself than anyone else.
I should've asked more questions during the call. Now I had no idea where Shirley was or what was happening.
I was anxious and frantic, saying whatever came to mind at that moment.
York's face was grim, his brow furrowed in deep concentration.
"Don't worry," he said, his voice steady but taut. "The police won't give away too many details over the phone. They'll need to verify our IDs first before they can tell us anything more about the case."
I could see the anxiety written all over York's face, and I knew it was because of his worry for Shirley. I tried to reassure him.
"It's going to be okay," I said softly, hoping my words would offer him some comfort. "Mom's going to be fine."
The car's GPS announced that we were still about an hour and a half away from the Ashvale Town Police Station in Ardenport.
An hour and a half didn't sound like much on paper, but in that moment, it felt like an eternity.
We'd been driving all day, starting our search for Shirley in the morning. Now, with the sky turning darker by the minute, we were still on the road.
Time seemed to stretch endlessly, and that hour and a half felt like torture.
York hadn't said a word since we'd left. The car was unnervingly quiet, with only the occasional flash of an electric bike zipping past to break the silence.
York didn't seem to notice the bikes at all. His foot pressed harder on the accelerator, and he cut right through them without slowing down.
It made me nervous. I could feel my grip tightening on the seat.
"Hey, slow down. You're speeding. This is a rural road," I said, trying to keep my tone light. "If we crash, how are we going to get Mom back home?"
York didn't react at first. His face was hard as stone, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. After a beat, his voice came out hoarse. "I just want to take her home."
