The glass was one-sided, and Jenny couldn't see us.
Robert introduced her to us. "She is Jenny Lambert. According to the procedure..."
Before he could finish his words, York suddenly opened the microphone on the table and snapped, "Jenny Lambert, where did you hide my mother?"
Then, Jenny suddenly raised her head. Her eyes revealed indescribable panic and guilt.
Her lips turned pale, and she trembled. She lowered her head in fear.
Jenny was too different from the kidnapper I imagined.
She looked just like one of those honest village women. It was hard for me to imagine such a woman as a criminal.
However, one could never judge a book by its cover.
"Mr. Smith, you're not following the procedure! You can't talk to the prisoner without permission!" Robert tried to stop York.
York cursed, "Fuck the process!"
I was too focused on Shirley's safety to care about anything else.
As Robert and York argued, I picked up the microphone and asked in a deep voice, "Jenny, I'm Shirley's daughter. You used to work at the Smith family, so you're considered an old friend of my mother's. You can tell me if you have any difficulties or requests, but please don't hurt my mother."
I kept my eyes glued to Jenny as I spoke.
Upon hearing my voice, her eyes began to shift, and the panic and embarrassment on her face deepened.
She still refused to speak from the beginning to the end.
I was about to ask more questions when Robert rushed over and snatched the microphone away.
"You guys are too much!" Robert shouted.
He called his colleagues over and chased York and me out of the police station. "I can understand your feelings as family members. Don't worry, we will continue to investigate and try to find the victim as soon as possible," said Robert.
The cop's promise didn't sound any safer to me.
"We can't just count on the police. Have you heard anything new from the people you sent out before?" I asked York uneasily as we got into the car.
York shook his head and frowned. "I've ordered everyone to search."
York and I didn't have any clues, so it was a bad idea to search outside like headless chickens.
York drove me back to the Smith family. I went into Shirley's bedroom and searched for some clue that would connect her with Jenny.
"Miss, did Jenny kidnap Madam?" The butler found me and looked surprised. "Madam was so good to her back then. Why would she do such a thing?"
I looked up and hurriedly asked, "Why do you say that? Did something happen between Jenny and my mother back then?"
The butler recalled, "I worked with Jenny before. In my opinion, she was honest and hardworking. She had always had a good reputation in the Smith family. Before she resigned and left the Smith family two years ago, I remember her saying that she wanted to go back home and take care of her son wholeheartedly because her son was in a key middle school.
After all, she divorced her husband early on. His husband worked outside and never came back home to see his son. I think Jenny might feel she owed her son.
"After Madam found out, she was happy for Jenny. Madam even specially gave her an additional year's salary when she was handling the resignation procedures." The butler looked surprised after saying that. "I can't figure out why Jenny has a reason to harm Madam."
'I can't figure it out either,' I thought.
After hearing the butler's words, I couldn't help but recall the look in Jenny's eyes in the interrogation room.
Now that I thought about it, it was as if Jenny had been forced to kidnap Shirley.
Puzzled, I asked the butler, "Can you find Jenny's home address?"
I had a bold idea. 'If I can find Jenny's son, perhaps I could get Jenny to speak up and tell me where Shirley is.'
"I'll go through the files now!" said the butler, who told me the Smith family's domestic helpers were registered when they started working.
After the butler left, York went upstairs to look for me. "I just contacted Dad. He's going back to the country immediately."
"Okay," I replied coldly. Even if Ben flew back now, it would still take more than ten hours.
I didn't expect him to be of any help at all. If I wanted to find Shirley as soon as possible, it would still be up to me and York.
I relayed what I heard from the butler to York and analyzed, "Jenny kidnapped Mom by tricking her. Is there a possibility that she committed the crime alone and didn't have any other accomplices? After Mom woke up and called for help, Jenny had no choice but to move Mom again before the police arrived."
York looked at me deeply and said, "Jenny is a thin middle-aged woman. If she were alone, she definitely couldn't move Mom too far away in a short time."
I nodded. "So, it's very likely that Mom is still hiding in a hidden place near the village house."
"I'll bring people to the vicinity of the village house and do a thorough search." York took out his phone and immediately contacted his assistant to meet him.
Without further ado, York drove away without stopping.
Soon, the butler sent me Jenny's registration information for employees.
I found the address of her hometown. It was in a county at the intersection of Enschester and Sea City.
Through the data investigation, I learned Jenny's son was called Andrew Bowman. He was 14 years old this year.
I drove to the county at dawn.
There was only one key high school in the county. I asked the guard and quickly met the dean of the high school.
I used the excuse that I was a relative of Jenny's, who asked me to send something to Andrew.
The dean's expression changed.
Another teacher at the nearby table said in surprise, "Andrew Bowman? The child from Grade 2, Class 3? Didn't he drown half a year ago?"
My scalp went numb as I turned to look at the teacher. "You mean Andrew has passed away?"
"That's right. That boy is quite smart. His grades have been excellent. What a pity." The teacher said regretfully and indignantly, "I think he went out to play with his father on the weekend and lost his footing and fell into the reservoir. His father is something. He knew his son can't swim, but he still brought him to the reservoir to have fun!"
I was shocked and blurted out, "Aren't Andrew's parents divorced?"
"I'm not too sure about that," the teacher said.
As soon as I finished my words, the dean mercilessly exposed me. "What exactly are you doing here? I'll call the police if you don't tell me the truth!"
I came back to my senses and didn't dare stay any longer. I quickly slipped out of the school.
At that moment, I received a call from York. "Natalia, Mom has been found! We're at the hospital now. Come over quickly!"
I cried tears of joy. I didn't have time to ask further and immediately drove back to Enschester.
In the hospital, I looked at Shirley lying in the hospital bed with a ventilator on her head and her eyes closed. Tears came to my eyes.
