I grabbed York's collar and asked him with widened eyes, "What happened to Mom?"
'How could this be? Didn't York say on the phone that he had found Shirley?' I thought.
I had tacitly agreed that she was safe and sound when I was in the car. I had even thought, 'When I came to the hospital later and saw Shirley, I would throw myself into her arms and hug her tightly!'
Shirley's appearance deeply hurt me.
Two streams of tears streamed down my face. My hands, which were holding onto York's collar, trembled uncontrollably.
"Natalia, Mom will wake up." York's expression was heavy.
He stood ramrod straight. After saying that, he paused, raised his head stiffly, and patted me lightly on the shoulder.
"How did this happen? What did Mom go through?" I couldn't stop crying and asked him in a choked voice.
Perhaps it was because I was crying too hard, York couldn't help but sigh.
He put his arm around my shoulders, and I cried until I lost all my strength. My body fell into his arms weakly, and I heard him explain in a muffled voice, "You're right. Jenny didn't have any other accomplices. After Mom cried for help, she was drugged by Jenny again. Then, Jenny dragged Mom into a dry and abandoned well outside the village and sealed the well with bricks."
I was terrified and thought, 'If York had gone any later, we might have lost our mother forever.'
I didn't dare to continue thinking about it.
Fortunately, Shirley was still alive.
I wiped away my tears and stood up straight. I looked at Shirley's sleeping face and asked York, "What did the doctor say?"
"Mom has been locked up in the abandoned well for too long. Her brain is severely deprived of oxygen. The doctor tried his best to save her life. It depends on when she will wake up," York told me in a low voice.
I pursed my lips and asked, "Have you informed the police?"
"Jenny still won't say anything." York frowned. It was obvious that he was not satisfied with that result. He addede hatefully, "That damn woman, I won't let her have an easy time!"
I couldn't figure it out. Shirley was good to Jenny. Why would she return kindness with ingratitude?
Outside the ward, hurried footsteps could be heard.
The next second, Ben rushed in anxiously.
He was wearing a suit. He cried out when he saw Shirley lying on the hospital bed.
"Honey, what's wrong? Wake up, honey!" Ben leaned against the bed and held Shirley's hand tightly. He called out to her sincerely, "It's all my fault. If I didn't go on a business trip, nothing would have happened to you..."
Ben's tears streamed down his face. He cried for a good half hour, looking like a good husband.
I saw the dark circles under his eyes. For a moment, I could feel his feelings for Shirley.
He did have an affair with Bernie, but he did love Shirley.
I didn't quite understand Ben's twisted thinking.
"Dad, we'll take care of Mom. You haven't slept for more than ten hours, right? Go home and rest." York helped Ben up.
I echoed, "You drive Dad home. I'll stay here and take care of Mom."
Ben nodded and said goodbye to Shirley hoarsely. He told her that he would go home and wash up before coming back to accompany her.
I was in a low mood. I stayed by Shirley's side and suddenly missed Quinn, who was overseas on a business trip.
If he had been beside me, I might not have felt so helpless.
As soon as the thought appeared, I laughed at myself. 'Natalia Hinton, what are you thinking? Even if Quinn is in the country, he probably wouldn't have the time to accompany you.'
