                    My eyes widened in shock.
The "she" in Ben referred to Shirley.
Shirley was kidnapped. Could it be that Ben and Bernie had planned it?
After learning the truth, I couldn't help but tremble. I covered my mouth with my hand to prevent myself from screaming.
Ben didn't notice me. He focused on comforting Bernie on the other end of the phone. "Well, you can relax. Jenny won't talk. She'll take all the blame when she gets what she wants."
Ben's voice was calm and steady.
I couldn't see his expression through the cabinet door, but I could imagine his devilish appearance.
On the other end of the phone, Bernie said something else. Ben was silent for a moment before saying hypocritically, "Bernie, it is not the time to fool around now! I promised to marry you, but we have to wait until we successfully get the Lee family shares, right?
"How could I lie to you? You've been the one who contacted Jenny. You asked her to kill Shirley. She missed. You can't blame me, right?
"Alright, I won't talk to you anymore. Remember, don't contact me first from now on! Be good and wait for my call, okay?" Ben coaxed Bernie gently.
Then, he hung up.
Ben sneered and turned on his computer. His hands were typing something on the keyboard.
I listened to the crackling. My head was still spinning.
Before today, I could never have imagined that my father would collude with his mistress to kill my mother.
She was his wife who had given birth to his children and helped him!
Ben was simply a beast!
Downstairs, York seemed to have returned. The maid greeted him respectfully, "Good afternoon, sir."
When Ben heard the noise, he immediately turned off the computer and stepped out of the study.
I heard his footsteps going down the stairs and scrambled out of the bookcase.
"Dad, you're home, too?" York asked in surprise in the living room.
Ben said flawlessly, "Yes. I came back to get something. Then, I'll go to the hospital to accompany your mother."
The maid added, "Sir, Mr. York and Miss are back today. The Smith family hasn't been so lively in a long time. I hope Madam can recover as soon as possible."
Upon hearing that, Ben raised his voice and asked, "When did Miss come back?"
The maid said in surprise, "Sir, didn't you see Miss upstairs? Miss went to the study to look for Madam's aromatherapy just now."
Ben blurted out, "What did you say?"
My heart skipped a beat, and cold sweat broke out on my back.
Before Ben became suspicious, I had an idea and ran back to the master bedroom. I shouted downstairs, "Penny, didn't you say that the aromatherapy was in the cabinet in the master bedroom? Why didn't I find it?"
I shouted as I made my way downstairs.
I bumped into Ben's gloomy and stiff face and pretended to be surprised. "Dad, when did you come back?"
"Natalia, were you on the second floor just then?" Ben stared at me and asked thoughtfully.
I nodded, dumbfounded. "That's right. I've been looking for aromatherapy in the master bedroom, but I couldn't find it."
"Miss, you heard wrong. I told you that the aromatherapy was in the cabinet in the study," the maid explained. "I'll go get it for you now."
I slapped my forehead and joked, "Well, my head seems to be overloaded recently."
York stood beside Ben. He narrowed his eyes and sized me up. No one knew what he was thinking.
I didn't have the time to care about him. I turned to ask Ben, "By the way, Dad, did you want to tell me something just now?"
"It's nothing." Ben's expression softened. He looked at me and smiled. "It's been hard on you to take care of your mother recently. You have to take care of your health."
"Yes, I understand." I smiled and avoided Ben's gaze.
It wasn't that I felt guilty, but I was afraid that if we continued to look at him, I couldn't hide the anger in my eyes.
After knowing Ben was the real murderer who kidnapped Shirley, I felt a chill in my heart and wanted to strangle him to death.
Ben said nothing else and returned to the bedroom to wash up and change.
York asked me, "Are you going to the hospital now?"
I nodded uneasily.
"I'll go with you." He expressed that he also wanted to go to the hospital to see Shirley.
In the car, I looked at the shrinking villa through the rearview mirror. I recalled what I had heard in the study and subconsciously bit my lip.
York sensitively captured this detail.
"You seem to hate Dad," York suddenly spoke inexplicably.
It was unknown if he was asking me or drawing a conclusion.
I was stunned. After Shirley was kidnapped, I saw York's performance. He was dependent on Shirley.
However, I couldn't predict how he would react if he found out that the real culprit was Ben.
Whose side would he be on?
It seemed that no matter what choice he made, it would be a cruel thing.
York was different from me. He grew up with Ben and Shirley. His feelings for Ben were much deeper than mine. Could York have tipped him off to protect Ben?
With that in mind, I didn't dare tell him the truth immediately.
"York, do you think Dad loves Mom?" I didn't answer his question and turned to look at him.
York looked straight ahead and focused on driving. A mocking smile appeared on his face when he heard that. "What's there to be conflicted about? In my opinion, love is a thing that can make a person great, but it can also destroy a group of people. Natalia, the smart people are different from you. They won't force others to love."
He was indirectly calling me stupid.
I wasn't in the mood to argue. I turned to look out the window and didn't say another word.
At night, I couldn't sleep anyway, so I sent the caregiver to rest and stayed in the ward with Shirley for a while.
It was late at night, and the hospital was exceptionally quiet.
I sat by the hospital bed, held Shirley's hand, and told her the truth.
I didn't know if she could hear me or not. At the end of my speech, my voice began to crack, and I choked out, "Mom, can you wake up? I don't know what I should do now. I miss you so much..."
"Shirley will wake up." A voice suddenly sounded behind me.
A shadow loomed over my head. I looked up in shock and saw Quinn's handsome and familiar face.
He stared at me and suddenly took a step forward to hug me.
Quinn's large hand caressed the back of my head. My entire face was buried in his abdomen. His low voice entered my ears from above. "I'm sorry that I couldn't rush back to be with you immediately."
My heart skipped a beat. I smelled the familiar mint fragrance on his body as if an emotional switch had been pressed.
All the grievances, fear, and helplessness in my heart surged out continuously. I started wailing.
He kept stroking my long hair, letting my tears soak his shirt. He said calmly, "Don't cry. I'm here."
