In a moment of desperation, I subconsciously wanted to turn off the screen.
But it was too late. York quickly walked to the computer and saw the words on it.
"You want to unlock Dad's computer password?" York's expression suddenly darkened. He speculated for no reason. "Did Quinn ask you to do it?"
I sucked in a breath of cold air. It seemed that he was quite prejudiced against Quinn.
At this moment, York mistook me for a corporate spy trying to steal information.
For a moment, I wasn't sure whether I should correct his misunderstanding.
After all, it was better than me telling him that I was here to investigate evidence of Ben for attempting to murder Shirley.
I frowned, looking at him with displeasure, biting my lip. "I just needed to use Dad's computer for something urgent."
York snorted, pulling out his phone and pressing a few buttons before putting it to his ear. "If you want to use Dad's computer, then let me call and ask for the password."
"No!" I panicked and snatched his phone away.
I tried to hang up, only to realize the phone was still locked. York had done this just to provoke me.
"Natalia, I should give you a mirror so you can see what you look like when you're lying." York grabbed his phone back, staring at me with a complicated expression as he asked, "Still not ready to tell the truth?"
"York," I called him seriously. At that point, I had no choice left.
Taking a deep breath, I walked over and closed the study door. Turning around, I asked in a low voice, "If I told you that the one behind Mom's suffering isn't just Jenny, but there's also a mastermind, would you believe me?"
"So, you're saying the mastermind is Dad?" York said indifferently, sitting down in the computer chair and staring at me with unreadable eyes.
I was stunned for a second, then nodded, trying to figure out how to explain. "Whether you believe it or not..."
"Is there any evidence on the computer that could convince me?" York interrupted, his gaze fixed on the screen.
I didn't expect such a calm reaction from him.
After a pause, I decided to be honest. I told him everything I overheard in the study that day, and all the information Quinn had discovered.
York's expression darkened. He did not interrupt me again, as if he were thinking about something.
When I finished, I asked, "York, you said you'd protect Mom and make those who hurt her pay. If that person is Dad, what would you do?"
York didn't answer. He straightened up in the chair and started typing on the keyboard.
"Which passwords did you just try?" he asked me without looking up.
Only then did I realize he was helping me crack the password.
I quickly told him the passwords I had attempted, mumbling, "I tried Dad's birthday, but it didn't work. Could it be Bernie's birthday? But I don't know when that is."
Hearing this, York typed in a string of numbers.
A moment later, the computer said the password was incorrect.
"It's not her birthday," York said. Immediately after, I saw him type in Shirley's birthday on the keyboard. The result was still wrong.
The evidence was right in front of us, yet just out of reach. And we had to stay alert in case Ben returned at any moment.
This kind of anxiety made me restless. I said, "Looks like birthdays aren't the right direction..."
A scumbag like Ben would never truly love any woman, let alone use a woman's birthday as a password.
At the same time, I heard a ding. The computer was unlocked.
"You got it!" I exclaimed with joy, rushing over to move the mouse, clicking through folders to look for evidence, and casually asked, "So, what was the password?"
York didn't answer. I turned to glance at him instinctively and noticed a complex look in his eyes.
It was as if he couldn't believe it, with a tinge of anger. Staring at the screen, his voice drifted as he said, "Their wedding anniversary."
It was like a bullet hit me in the heart. I froze completely.
I couldn't believe that Ben's computer password was his wedding anniversary with Shirley.
Did he love Shirley? If he loved her, how could he have tried to kill her...
"Maybe it was set a long time ago," I said solemnly, pulling myself back together.
Maybe long ago, Ben really did love Shirley.
Now wasn't the time to get caught up in that. With the computer unlocked, I quickly searched through the folders.
After a few minutes, I finally found a hidden folder on the hard drive.
Inside was a photo of a man with his left hand severed. It had to be Callum. There was also a document showing he had borrowed 30 thousand dollars from a financial institution under Maple Media and failed to repay it.
There were also Jenny's personal files, information about the drowning case involving Andrew, and a list of phone numbers.
These matched almost perfectly with the materials Quinn had gathered.
Faced with this evidence, York could no longer deny my claims.
"Maybe we can use this list of numbers to find out where Callum is now." I guessed, though I also recalled something Ben had said earlier and couldn't help worrying whether Callum was even still alive.
York silently jotted down the numbers, clearly intending to send someone to investigate.
My phone suddenly rang. It was Robert.
When I picked up, Robert said, "Ms. Hinton, Jenny has confessed everything regarding your mother's kidnapping."
A chill ran down my spine. I blurted out, "Who did she name?"
Robert said, "She took full responsibility. According to her confession, she held a grudge after a past argument with your mother while working for the Smith family, and she acted out of revenge."
"She's lying!" I almost shouted. If Jenny confessed now out of the blue, that probably meant Callum was already dead. I shouted into the phone, "Mr. Taylor, listen to me. Find a man named Callum Bowman immediately. He's Jenny's ex-husband. Something might've happened to him already!"
Though Robert didn't quite understand what I meant, he knew it was a matter of life and death, and agreed to start the search right away.
I also promised him I'd bring the evidence to the police station as soon as possible.
After hanging up, I quickly emailed the files to myself and told York to start the car.
My phone rang again. I thought Robert had something more to say and picked up without checking the caller ID. "Mr. Taylor, I'm on my way right..."
As I turned off the computer, I grabbed my jacket and headed out the door.
"Natalia, your mother is in danger!" Quinn's deep voice came from the phone. "My man at the hospital just called. Ben filed for her transfer ten minutes ago."
