"What did you just say?" Goosebumps sprang up all over my body.
Ben had arranged for Shirley to be transferred to another hospital. He was trying to get rid of her for good.
The second this terrifying thought struck me, I immediately hung up on Quinn and tried calling Ben.
He didn't answer. Unwilling to give up, I kept redialing as I bolted down the stairs in a panic, not even bothering to grab a coat.
The butler saw how shaken I looked and said with concern, "Miss Hinton, it's cold outside. You should wear a coat..."
But I ignored him. Wearing nothing but a thin sweater, I stumbled out the front door.
York's car was already warmed up and waiting in the yard. I yanked the door open.
"Natalia, what's going on?" York asked, frowning slightly when he saw me.
I didn't even stop to catch my breath. "Dad arranged for Mom to be transferred!"
At my words, York's expression darkened immediately. He took out his phone, clearly about to call Ben.
I stopped him. "Don't bother. He won't answer! We have to get to the hospital now and find out where Mom was taken!"
York said grimly, "It's too late. If Dad really plans to hurt Mom, he won't give us a chance to catch up."
"You mean we're just supposed to sit back and do nothing while Mom's in danger?" I shouted panickedly.
York met my gaze calmly. "I mean, Dad won't actually harm Mom."
I froze. Was I being naive, or was York just too trusting of Ben? I didn't understand what he meant.
If Ben didn't mean to hurt Shirley, why transfer her now, of all times?
A cold wind blew past, and I shivered violently.
York stepped out of the car, grabbed my arm, and dragged me back inside while speaking in a firm voice. "Most likely, he's trying to scare you. I think he already knows you suspect him."
This was Ben's way of throwing me off balance.
Within a minute, York had pulled me back into the warm house.
He instructed the butler to fetch me a coat, then poured a glass of warm water and handed it to me. He said flatly, "If you want to protect Mom, you need to take care of yourself first."
The warmth of the glass jolted me awake. He was right. I couldn't fall apart now.
I tilted my head back and drank the water in one go, the warmth driving out the cold from my body. Recomposed, I asked, "Then what do you suggest we do now?"
York said calmly, "I'll go to the hospital to find out where Mom is. You go to the police station and give Robert the evidence."
Splitting up was the safest approach. I couldn't help but admire York's clarity of thought in a crisis.
Half an hour later, I arrived at the Ashvale Town Police Station.
Robert was already waiting for me. He told me that as soon as he got off the phone, he had sent someone to investigate Callum.
If we were lucky, we would hear back later.
"Ms. Hinton, earlier on the phone, you said Jenny was lying. What exactly did you mean? Are you saying there's another culprit?" Robert asked, staring intently at me.
I nodded and opened my email on my phone. Then I froze. There were no unread emails.
But I clearly remembered sending myself that folder from Ben's computer before leaving.
I wondered if I was mistaken or if the email server was down.
I wiped the sweat off my forehead and kept refreshing.
"Ms. Hinton?" Robert said, growing impatient at my silence. "Where's the evidence?"
"I..." My mind went blank. I had no idea how to explain this.
I couldn't just say that Ben was the real culprit, not without proof.
As anxiety gripped me, someone knocked on the door. A young officer entered and whispered something into Robert's ear.
Robert's eyes widened in shock. He exclaimed, "Ms. Hinton, Callum Bowman is dead!"
I gasped. "How did he die?"
He quickly explained, "He owed money to loan sharks. They already cut off one of his hands. Last night, no one knows how, but he managed to escape and fled toward the river. He was cornered, had nowhere left to run... and drowned himself."
It was the same way his son, Andrew, died.
So that was the deal Ben and Bernie made with Jenny.
Robert looked at me, visibly eager. "Ms. Hinton, how did you know something would happen to Callum?"
He was desperate to see the evidence I claimed to have.
Everything lined up, and yet I had no proof that Ben was the one pulling the strings. I was furious with myself.
"Mr. Taylor, have you investigated Jenny's son? His name was Andrew Bowman. He drowned in a reservoir half a year ago while out playing with his father." I continued, "Jenny kidnapped my mom as part of a deal, to get revenge for her son."
"You mean, the loan sharks made that deal?" Robert looked confused.
I bit my lip and was about to tell him that Ben was the real culprit.
Then my phone rang. It was York.
I answered immediately, "York, did you find Mom?"
"Yeah, she's fine. I'll send you the location. Come here now," York said. He added cryptically, "Dad's here too. He asked me to tell you. He forgot to let us know about the transfer. That was his mistake. He'll apologize when you get here."
My heart clenched. That didn't sound like an apology. It sounded like a threat.
"Got it." I hung up.
Robert still had more questions, but I cut him off. "Mr. Taylor, I've told you everything I know. I came here because I don't believe Jenny acted alone. I hope the police will continue the investigation and find the real culprit."
"So... you don't actually know who the real culprit is?" Robert looked stunned.
"I have to go." I got up and left the police station without looking back.
Following the address York sent me, I navigated to a resort hotel on the outskirts of town.
When I reached the presidential suite, neither York nor Ben was in sight.
Standing by the door, I saw Shirley lying quietly on the bed, still connected to a breathing machine.
A group of nurses and doctors stood by her side.
Two nurses whispered to each other, "Mr. Smith really is a model husband! I heard this resort is where he first met Mrs. Smith. He's doing all this to help her regain her memory. How thoughtful."
