"Right? They say men turn bad once they get rich, but Mr. Smith is so wealthy and still loves Mrs. Smith so deeply. I'm so envious!"
Hearing that made my skin crawl.
I had to admit, Ben crafted his public image flawlessly. His cunning forced me to stay on high alert.
He transferred Shirley to this hospital and even hired professional medical staff to look after her.
On one hand, to scare me. On the other hand, it was to maintain his image as a model husband.
But York was right about one thing. It seemed Ben wouldn't make a move on Shirley for now.
I relaxed a little and, after leaving the room, used my phone to contact York. "I'm here. Where are you?"
As soon as I spoke, the door to the next suite opened. It was York.
I hung up and called out, "York, are you okay?"
His cryptic words on the phone had me worried.
York gave a faint reply and looked at me deeply.
Behind him, someone suddenly stepped forward, smiling as he greeted me. "Natalia, you're here."
Hearing Ben's voice made my ears buzz, and my blood surged.
Anger overtook reason. Faced with his hypocritical smile, I lost control and stormed into the room, grabbing him by the collar.
"Ben!" I could no longer call him "Dad." Gritting my teeth, I said, "You're a monster. You'd go as far as to harm your wife!"
Behind me, York quietly shut the door.
Ben raised his eyebrows, gazing at me with veiled meaning. "Natalia, I don't understand what you're talking about. No one wants your mother to get hurt. As a family, shouldn't we be united and work together to wake her up?"
He was still pretending!
"You don't know what I'm talking about? You not only cheated with Bernie but also bribed Jenny to kidnap Mom. You think you can just do these things and leave no trace?" I listed his crimes one by one.
Ben's expression darkened, but his devilish smile never faded. "Natalia, I understand how worried you are about your mom. But if you make such accusations, you'd better have proof. Otherwise, I might have to send you for a psychiatric evaluation."
He was cunning. He worried I might record him, so he avoided admitting to anything.
I was left speechless, fuming inside, barely restraining myself from punching him.
Suddenly, my wrist tightened. York had grabbed it. His voice was low. "Don't make a scene. Come with me to see Mom."
I was stunned and looked at York in disbelief.
Not only was he not helping me, but he was stopping me from confronting Ben.
Without giving me a chance to argue, York forcibly dragged me out of the room. Behind us, Ben raised an eyebrow smugly and instructed, "York, think carefully about what Dad said. Have a good chat with your sister."
In the hallway, I yanked my hand away from York.
"York, I didn't expect you to sell out to Ben so quickly. What did he offer you?" I said coldly. I scoffed mockingly. "Like father, like son!"
York looked at me grimly, his face clouded. "Natalia, you don't have any evidence now, do you?"
His words struck like a blow. I thought of the evidence that had mysteriously vanished from my email.
"You knew?" I asked, shocked.
"Come with me. This isn't the place to talk," York said, tossing the words over his shoulder as he headed for the stairwell.
I snapped out of it and quickly followed him up to the rooftop garden. All around us was empty.
"You saw me send the folder to my email, right?" I asked, breaking the silence.
I wouldn't forget something so important.
York nodded and asked calmly, "Do you know why Dad dared to keep such critical files on the home computer?"
A chill ran down my spine. York continued, "That computer had password protection and a hacker monitoring system. The moment you entered the wrong password, he was alerted. Everything you did after that was watched by the hacker. You thought you sent the email, but it was intercepted."
So, even the system's notification of a successful send was fake.
I frowned. I'd underestimated Ben. I was in such a hurry, and I missed this detail.
Furious, I looked up at York. "Now that I've lost the evidence, you're switching sides to help Ben convince me? York, don't waste your breath. I will never let Ben get away with this!"
Shirley loved York deeply. I couldn't understand why York would side with a murderer like Ben.
He said plainly, "Dad promised me he won't hurt Mom again."
It sounded like a cruel joke. I let out a laugh. "York, I used to think you were smart. Turns out, your intelligence is inherited from Ben."
A man like York wouldn't truly believe Ben's promise. He was just giving himself an excuse to protect his own interests.
My heart turned cold. I didn't want to waste another word on him and turned to leave.
"Natalia." York suddenly spoke behind me. "I promised I'd bring her home. That's all I can commit to."
What kind of pathetic promise was that?
I didn't look back and headed straight for the presidential suite.
After staying with Shirley for a while and confirming she was stable, I drove home.
Outside the villa district, a car suddenly cut me off.
The driver's door opened, and Aiden got out, walking straight toward my vehicle.
I was surprised to see him. He knocked lightly on my window, signaling me to unlock it.
I hesitated, then unlocked the door. Aiden quickly got in on the passenger side.
"You came to see me?" I asked.
Recalling our last encounter, I still felt uneasy around him.
Aiden stared at me intently and said seriously, "Natalia, I have something important to tell you."
"What is it?" I asked, confused.
He said with a frown, "It's about the truth behind your grandmother Mary's heart attack. It might be connected to your mom's kidnapping."
My eyes widened in shock. "What do you know?"
Was Aiden implying that my grandmother's heart attack was also caused by Ben?
"Someone has been lying to you..." Aiden said. He was about to continue. Suddenly, his eyes shifted outside the window, his brows furrowing sharply.
I followed his gaze and saw Quinn standing silently outside the car.
His face was ice-cold, eyes dark as a bottomless abyss, staring at Aiden and me with displeasure.
