My heart skipped a beat. Every time Quinn and Aiden met, something unpleasant always happened.
Especially after the last time, when Aiden publicly lied and accused Quinn of causing Grandma Mary's death.
"Aiden, go home. I'll meet you another time." I quickly sent him away to prevent the conflict from escalating.
Aiden didn't argue. He gave me a nod and said worriedly, "Natalia, the Smith family is dangerous. Be careful."
I froze for a second. That confirmed my earlier suspicions. Maybe the person Aiden wanted to expose was Ben.
Just as I thought that, Aiden had already opened the car door.
Snapping back to my senses, I also got out of my car. But before I could say anything to Quinn, he had already stormed past me and thrown a heavy punch right into Aiden's face.
Aiden didn't have time to dodge and took the hit straight on.
He staggered back several steps, barely managing to steady himself by grabbing his car door.
"Quinn! What are you doing?" I cried out in panic.
Quinn looked at Aiden with a cold expression and said in a chilling tone, "Aiden, I admire your courage. You're the first person to ever provoke me like this. It's time we settle our score."
He was furious. I could feel the temperature around us drop just standing next to him.
Maybe because he knew he was in the wrong, Aiden didn't fight back. He didn't even look angry about being hit.
Instead, he frowned and said, "My only regret is not stopping Natalia from marrying you."
"You?" Quinn sneered. "Aiden, aside from spreading lies and using dirty tricks, what else are you good at?"
Aiden paused as he was about to get into his car.
Quinn lunged again, ready to throw another punch.
I rushed up and grabbed him from behind, wrapping my arms tightly around him. "Aiden, go!" I yelled.
Aiden looked at me with a complicated expression, then finally got in his car and drove away.
Watching the taillights disappear, I sighed in relief and let go of Quinn.
"Don't you think you're childish?" I was furious. He was already an adult, yet he still resorted to violence.
"Childish?" Quinn looked down at me. His gaze was cold and unreadable. "Seems like I came at the wrong time."
I frowned. "Quinn, you talk about how slander is a dirty tactic, so what do you call what you just did?"
There was nothing going on between me and Aiden, yet he never trusted me.
"Have you ever trusted me?" I asked, my voice growing more irritated. "Then again, maybe it doesn't matter. Everyone has secrets. I don't owe you any explanation about me and Aiden, just like you've never told me anything about Clarissa."
At that moment, I blurted out the grievance in my heart.
Quinn, usually so composed, looked stunned for a moment.
"You've been investigating me?" he asked after a pause, narrowing his eyes.
I rolled my eyes. "Clarissa has been living in your family's vineyard. Do I even need to investigate?"
I didn't want to argue anymore. I got into the car and drove home.
At the villa, the nanny came out holding Benedict. He clung to me, calling "Mommy" in his soft voice, instantly easing my irritation.
"Daddy..." Benedict squealed happily, waving toward the gate. Quinn had followed me home.
Dinner felt uneasy. On one hand, Quinn's brooding face was right in front of me. On the other hand, Aiden's words kept echoing in my head.
I never imagined that the person who triggered Grandma Mary's heart attack might have been Ben.
Why would he be so cruel? How did he even do it?
Unfortunately, Aiden didn't finish what he wanted to say. I had to meet him again soon to get the full story.
Later that night, after I showered and returned to the bedroom, I found Quinn still awake.
He was sitting alone in a chair, no phone or tablet in sight. His gaze toward me looked a bit weary.
"Waiting for me?" I asked casually, glancing his way.
Even though I was in a bad mood, it felt wrong to completely ignore him since we shared the same space.
"Aren't you going to explain?" he asked suddenly. When I looked back at him, his voice lowered. "Or do you want me to explain instead?"
"Explain what?" I chuckled softly. "There's no need."
I knew enough about Clarissa.
I didn't care about the rest of their story, their past, or sweet moments. If he didn't love me, then whoever he loved didn't matter.
After I said that, Quinn's gaze darkened. He looked away and said nothing more.
Then he suddenly stood up and pulled me into a hug.
I froze instinctively, confused. "Quinn, what are you..."
He rested his chin on my head and sighed deeply. Then he murmured, "Natalia, what are you thinking?"
I felt his arms tighten around me, and the unfamiliar closeness made me a little uneasy.
As I moistened my dry lips, I heard him continue, "Are you still planning to leave me, like before?"
I was stunned. Why was he asking this? Was Aiden's appearance today stirring up his possessiveness again?
A sharp pain clenched in my chest. I gently pushed him away.
Avoiding his eyes, I shook my head and said, "I told you. I like how things are now. That was the truth. Quinn, what happened in the past is in the past. I don't need you to make up for it now. I agreed to remarry you without any plans to leave again. Unless you want it to end..."
Before I could finish, Quinn suddenly kissed me hard.
In the rush of breathless contact, I heard him murmur, "We won't end..."
He kissed me until I couldn't breathe, then lifted me in his arms and laid me on the bed.
I didn't even know how long it lasted. Only that it was well into the night before he finally let me rest.
Exhausted, I lay there barely able to keep my eyes open.
Quinn lay beside me, his arm draped around my waist. He kissed my ear gently.
My body still carried his scent. In that blurry moment, I felt strangely safe.
I didn't know whether it was Quinn himself giving me that feeling, or if I was just fooling myself.
He seemed like he couldn't live without me, or maybe he was just playing with me.
No matter what, I still couldn't read his heart.
