"I've already stationed bodyguards throughout this hotel—inside and out. You don't need to worry," Quinn murmured to me abruptly.
Immediately after, his slender fingers touched my temples and gently massaged them for me.
Hesitating for a few seconds, I didn't pull away.
I opened my eyes, meeting his concerned expression, and replied quietly, "Thank you. I appreciate your thoughtfulness."
I wasn't actually worried about Shirley's safety right now. As York said, Ben didn't dare to do anything to Shirley at this juncture. I was worried that I didn't have any evidence to bring Ben to justice.
How could he keep getting away with all the bad things he'd done?
I couldn't take it anymore!
Quinn noticed my ever-changing expression and asked, "What happened between you and York?"
I overreacted in the suite just now. No wonder he was surprised.
At the mention of York, I gritted my teeth in anger. "York betrayed Mom. He chose to become birds of a feather with Ben."
But Quinn did not say anything.
He pondered for a moment and said meaningfully, "A person like York actually found a female celebrity to be his girlfriend."
I paused—truthfully, that detail had struck me as odd, too.
Before Shirley's accident, York was avoiding June. How did they become boyfriend and girlfriend in the blink of an eye?
I couldn't care less about his psychological journey—I just pitied June, that lovesick fool, for treating York like some prized treasure.
In the back seat, Benedict, deep in sleep, stirred faintly at the sound of our voices, mumbling incoherently with his eyes still closed.
"Who cares? Let's bring Benedict home first." I stopped the conversation and started the car.
After lunch, Quinn rushed back to the group for a meeting.
Though his recent business trip abroad successfully resolved the material supply issues, the construction project now needed to accelerate its timeline.
That afternoon, I called Aiden, hoping to meet and finally hear what he hadn't finished telling me last time.
The phone rang for a long time, but Aiden never picked up.
I frowned, about to call again, when a housemaid approached me. "Madam, the gate security just called—a woman claiming to be your friend is asking to enter the neighborhood. They wanted to verify with you."
A friend?
My first thought was Raelynn—but if she were coming to see me at home, she would've called ahead.
I hurried down the stairs with the housemaid to the video call by the front door.
On the screen, I saw a face that I had never expected.
I almost blurted out, "Gemma!"
I would never have thought that she would dare to visit me after repaying kindness with ingratitude!
"Mrs. Madden, long time no see!" Gemma spotted me and flashed a grin before turning to the guard. "See? I told you Mrs. Madden and I are friends. Now, will you let me in?"
Seeing this, the security guard quickly apologized to her and let her enter the neighborhood.
The video call ended, and the screen went dark.
Suddenly catching my own reflection in the mirror, I stared wide-eyed, my face frozen in alarm.
Even the maid was shocked and asked me, "Madam, are you alright?"
I shook my head, forcing my thoughts back into focus. Gemma showing up unannounced like this—she definitely came prepared.
"Madam, should I prepare coffee and snacks for the guest?" The housemaid, sensing the tension, pressed cautiously.
"No need. You may go," I replied calmly.
With that, I strode to the front door and swung it open—just in time to see Gemma's figure approaching from a distance.
When she saw me, she quickened her pace and entered the garden.
"Mrs. Madden, how considerate of you to greet me at the door in person!" Gemma chirped with a grin.
My face darkened as I sneered, "Aren't you afraid I'll call the police and have you tossed straight back into a cell?"
"Terrified, actually—which is why I'm here to apologize properly," Gemma said, glancing around before lowering her voice. "Mrs. Madden, I brought a gift you'll like. You don't want to invite me in for a proper talk?"
A gift?
I saw that her hands were empty and wondered what she was up to.
I frowned, then turned and walked into the living room without another word.
Gemma followed closely behind. She didn't stand on ceremony and sat down on the sofa. She poured herself a glass of coffee.
"What exactly did you come to see me for?" I got straight to the point, not bothering to waste my breath on her.
"Mrs. Madden, still as impulsive as ever," Gemma feigned exasperation, flashing me a mocking grin. "Or have you forgotten? Last time you rushed in to save Aiden, you not only got yourself kidnapped but also got his hand crippled in the process."
Her words struck like knives. I snapped, "Gemma, did you come here today just to pick a fight?"
She drained the coffee from her cup in one go, then tapped her phone a few times before turning the screen toward me.
The moment the noise crackled through, my attention snapped toward it.
It was a surveillance video at the entrance of a road. In the video, a boy was squatting by the reservoir, trying to salvage his school bag from the water with a branch. At the same time, a man quietly approached behind him.
The next second, the man pushed the boy violently. With a splash, the boy fell into the reservoir.
The video stopped abruptly.
My eyes widened in shock—the scene in the video instantly reminded me of Andrew, who had drowned in the reservoir half a year ago!
Gemma promptly clarified, "The boy in the video is named Andrew—Jenny's son. As you can see, this footage proves his death wasn't an accident. It was premeditated murder."
"That man is Callum?" I asked subconsciously.
Could it be that Callum had personally killed Andrew?
Gemma shook her head. "No, his name is Alex White. He's a hooligan from Ashvale Town. At the same time, he's also a distant cousin of Bernie."
Andrew's drowning was no accident—it was a carefully orchestrated scheme by Bernie and Ben to manipulate Jenny into becoming their pawn.
They first tried to get Callum to owe usury money, then induced him to kidnap Andrew and extort Jenny.
In truth, they used Andrew's death to provoke Jenny, fueling her hatred for Callum, all to seal her deal with Bernie.
A sharp inhale steadied me. Once calm, I studied Gemma, suspicion flickering—was this video even real?
"Where did you get this surveillance footage?" I asked, my voice low and measured.
After the incident, the police had scoured all the surveillance around the reservoir and found nothing.
Gemma smirked. "How I got it doesn't matter. What you need to know is—once this video reaches the police, arresting Alex will force the truth out. Mrs. Madden, imagine if Jenny learned Bernie was the real killer behind her son's death. You think she'd retract her confession?"
I never expected Gemma to have dug so deep into the Smith family's affairs!
