Robert's expression grew increasingly grim.
"Mr. Taylor," I insisted firmly, "I'll take full responsibility for my own safety. I promise I'll follow your plan."
The plainclothes officer checked his watch and urged, "Mr. Taylor, we're running out of time. Please make a decision now."
Robert stared out the car window, his jaw clenched in hesitation. After a long pause, he finally gritted his teeth and gave his reluctant consent.
"Alright, Ms. Hinton," Robert said seriously, his voice low and urgent. "Your mission is to stall Leon and buy time for our backup. Under no circumstances are you to provoke the suspect. If you sense any danger, you must retreat immediately."
I nodded solemnly, then grabbed a lipstick from my handbag and hastily put on heavy makeup.
After all, showing up bare-faced for a job interview at an illegal brothel would definitely raise suspicion.
Three minutes later, with the comms earpiece Robert had given me hidden beneath my loose hair, I entered the hotel building alone.
According to the intel provided by the plainclothes officer, Leon should be in a room on the second floor at the moment.
As the elevator doors slid open on the second floor, I found myself facing the front desk. Behind it sat a man, scrolling through his phone with his head down.
When he saw me, he said offhandedly, "No rooms available." With that, he lowered his head again, absorbed in his phone.
It seemed my disguise still wasn't good enough, since his first impression was that I was just another guest checking in.
"Hello, I'm here for the job," I said in a low voice.
The man was visibly startled. This time, he put away his phone and scrutinized me carefully. "A job? Are we even hiring? Where did you see a job posting for this place?"
I adjusted my expression and said with a sweet laugh, "Come on, don't tease me. In our line of work, who advertises out in the open? My friend told me you pay well here and that it's safe. That's why I am here."
The man finally caught my drift. He stood up and circled me with an appraising look. "Well, well—wouldn't have guessed! With that face and classy vibe, you really don't seem like someone in this line of work!"
Trying not to arouse his suspicion, I managed a weak smile and said, "Honestly, I'm new to this business. Family troubles... I really need money."
Through the earpiece, Robert warned me urgently, "Leon is about to come out. Watch for his exit."
While keeping up the act, I discreetly scanned the hotel corridor for any sign of Leon.
As soon as I finished speaking, the man suddenly hooked a finger under my chin with a sleazy grin. He leered and said, "You're just my type. How about coming to my room for a... personal interview?"
When his fingers brushed against my skin, I instinctively flinched, a wave of nausea churning in my stomach.
I smiled as I brushed his hand away, forcing down my disgust and playing along. "You're not the boss. What good would your 'interview' do?"
The man remarked, "The boss is my uncle—think that counts?" As he spoke, he reached for my waist.
Through the earpiece, Robert was monitoring the situation in real time, repeatedly warning, "Ms. Hinton, stay alert. If things go south, abort immediately!"
Just then, the door at the far end of the corridor swung open from inside.
A burly man emerged and barked at the front desk guy, "I'm heading out. Just charge it to my membership card."
"Got it, Mr. Scott! Take care now!" the man said with exaggerated courtesy.
A chill ran through me as I realized the man was Leon.
