I wonder if Ben had found out about Leon's arrest.
If that was true, then he was unbelievably informative. I had barely stepped out of the police station, and he had already sent people to abduct me.
"He secretly installed a wiretapping app on your phone long ago," Shirley said, and everything suddenly clicked. She went on, "And he's had people tailing you this whole time."
I was thunderstruck. From the moment Gemma gave me the video, to me going to the police station—it had all been under Ben's surveillance.
So, in a fit of rage, Ben gave the guy tailing me a kill order—to eliminate me immediately.
"Mom," I asked, still shaken, "how did you find out about all this?"
Shirley said, "The guy tailing you is Arthur. Though he works for Ben, York once did him a big favor, so he's on our side now."
So, in the end, it was York who saved me, after all.
Thinking about how I had misunderstood him before, I felt a pang of guilt.
"York really should've just told me," I muttered. But deep down, I didn't blame him. I gathered he probably had his own reasons.
I was relieved that he didn't betray Mom and me for his personal gain.
Letting out a sigh of relief, I smiled and asked, "Mom, what's our next move?"
"I didn't expect you to get that crucial piece of evidence so suddenly," Shirley said, frowning thoughtfully. "But even with it, the most we can do is get Leon to confess about Bernie. Ben has always been extremely cautious. If I'm right, he's probably never shown his face to any of them."
She was right. That matched what I had overheard in the study.
The plan to have Jenny kidnap Shirley was carried out through one-on-one communication between Bernie and Jenny.
"Unless Bernie comes forward and points the finger at him, Ben will never be brought to justice," Shirley said, her expression growing graver. "But I just got word that he's preparing to smuggle Bernie out of the country."
My heart was racing with anxiety. If Bernie managed to flee the country, it would be nearly impossible to pin this on Ben.
"Should I call Robert to have someone watch Bernie?" I had a sudden idea and reached for my phone, only to find it wasn't there. "Mom, where's my phone?"
Shirley reminded me, "Don't you remember? Your phone has been bugged."
She told me that she had buried my phone in the middle of nowhere to avoid alarming Ben.
"With this, Ben will think I've already been 'taken care of' and won't suspect Arthur's loyalty," Shirley explained.
"Natalia, York says he's got a way to make Bernie testify against Ben," Shirley said, her voice tinged with concern yet firm. "Though he won't tell me the details, I trust him."
At this point, there was nothing else I could do but trust York, too.
A soft knock came at the door. Shirley glanced back at the door, then turned to me and said gently, "Natalia, I need to go back to the suite to avoid arousing suspicion. You'll have to stay here until York's plan succeeds. Once it's safe, I'll come and keep you company."
I nodded, trying to reassure her that I'd be fine.
Shirley stood up, draped a cloak over her shoulders, and turned to leave.
As she was about to walk out, I suddenly called out, "Mom..."
"What is it?" Shirley turned back to ask me.
I bit my lip. "Can I borrow your phone? I just want to let someone know I'm okay."
After leaving the police station, I had told Quinn I'd be home in an hour.
It had been way longer than that, and he would probably be worried since he couldn't reach me. And if I didn't come home tonight, Benedict might not be able to sleep.
The moment I started to care about someone, my rationality began to slip. Even knowing the risk, I couldn't help wanting to reach out.
Shirley looked at me tenderly, her voice gentle but serious as she asked, "Natalia, do you really trust Quinn that much?"
I choked up, completely at a loss for words.
The truth behind Mary's sudden heart attack remained unknown, and in Shirley's mind, Quinn was still highly suspicious.
I opened my mouth, wanting to defend him, but I had no proof, and my words would carry no weight.
I thought maybe once Ben was arrested, everything would come to light.
I forced a helpless smile and said, "I'm just worried about Benedict, that's all."
I urged her gently, "Mom, you should go now. Be careful, okay?"
Shirley nodded and left the room.
After the day's ordeal, I was exhausted. I washed up and collapsed onto the bed, but no matter how I tossed and turned, I couldn't fall asleep.
Ever since Quinn and I remarried, he came home every day without fail, except when traveling for work.
Without realizing it, I had grown used to sharing a bed with him and the faint scent of mint on his body that lulled me to sleep.
I couldn't help but wonder if Quinn was asleep, and when he woke in the middle of the night and didn't see me there, would he feel something missing?
After all, the only value I seemed to hold for him… was that he had grown used to me.
The next morning, Shirley woke me up.
Her face lit up with excitement as she said, "Natalia, Bernie turned herself in at the police station early this morning!"
My sleepiness vanished instantly—never in my wildest dreams did I think Bernie would actually turn herself in.
"I never thought York's plan would actually work," Shirley said, eyes red with emotion, though I couldn't tell if it was from joy or decades of suppressed frustration from her marriage.
York moved faster than I could've imagined. I couldn't wait to find out how he had pulled it off.
After my persistent questioning, Shirley finally revealed to me. "After Leon was arrested, he confessed the full details of how Bernie ordered him to murder Andrew. When Jenny learned the truth, she broke down and admitted to her dealings with Bernie. Fearing exposure, Ben chartered a private jet in the dead of night to smuggle Bernie out of the country.
"Ben didn't dare show up himself, so he sent his most trusted man, Arthur, to drive Bernie to the airport. But Arthur followed York's instructions and took Bernie to a deserted area instead. When Bernie realized something was wrong, Arthur pretended that Ben wanted her dead. Then, deliberately leaving a loophole, Arthur gave Bernie the chance to call the police."
Hearing all this, I was stunned by how flawlessly York had orchestrated the entire setup. I couldn't help but admire him.
Just then, Shirley's phone rang. She picked it up and said, "Got it."
After hanging up, she turned to me and said, "That was York. The police just took Ben from Maple Media. He's also announced publicly that I've regained consciousness. The police will be here soon to take our statements."
This also meant I could finally leave the hidden room.
I accompanied Shirley back to her suite. Moments later, several police officers arrived.
Along with them came someone I never expected to see.
Quinn looked at me, his face drawn and weary, his striking eyes rimmed with red. He must have been worried sick about me.
