At that moment, reason told me I couldn't stay there any longer. I was afraid I'd lose control in front of everyone.
Without waiting for anyone to react, I walked over and picked Benedict up, turning away as I said, "Quinn, I'm not feeling well. I'm going to rest in the room."
"Mommy, I still want to play with Miss Terell..." Benedict protested, clearly upset as I abruptly carried him off.
I shot him a stern look and said in a low voice, "Don't be naughty!"
I had never raised my voice at Benedict before.
Startled by my sudden outburst, the boy fell silent in fear.
Just as I was about to head upstairs, Clarissa called out, "Mrs. Madden, please wait a moment."
I paused and turned to her. With an embarrassed expression, she said apologetically, "Actually, I came specifically to see you. I know it's a bit forward of me to come here like this."
"Miss Terell, you came for me?" I asked, surprised.
Clarissa glanced at Benedict, and the babysitter immediately caught the hint, stepping forward to lead him back to his room.
The house staff quietly dispersed to tend to their duties, leaving us alone in the living room.
A bad feeling crept into my chest. Diana had already been difficult enough to deal with, and her sister didn't look any easier.
"Miss Terell, if you have something to say, please go ahead," I said.
Clarissa suddenly stood up and bowed deeply to me with solemn formality. "Mrs. Madden, I'm fully aware of all the trouble Diana caused after she returned to the country. As her elder sister, I sincerely apologize to you on her behalf."
I hadn't expected that move at all.
Quinn stood off to the side, watching us quietly without saying a word.
I didn't buy a word of Clarissa's polite speech, but if I didn't say something now, I'd just come off as petty.
So I said coolly, "What your sister did has nothing to do with you. Besides, I've put the past behind me, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't bring it up again, Miss Terell."
"Mrs. Madden, thank you." Clarissa smiled with visible relief. Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she continued, "There's one more thing I need to clarify on Quinn's behalf."
"Explain on my behalf?" Quinn asked reflexively upon hearing his name.
Clarissa nodded gently. "Mrs. Madden, please don't misunderstand. Quinn and I are simply close friends. There's never been anything inappropriate between us. Dr. Johnson mentioned that you followed Quinn's car to the winery that day but didn't come inside. I'd hate to be the cause of any rift between you two."
Clarissa's voice carried a plaintive note as she finished speaking, her eyes lowering demurely.
My blood ran cold. So this was her real game—coming under the guise of apologizing for her sister, only to ambush me like this.
"When did you go to the winery?" Quinn demanded abruptly, catching me off guard.
I whipped my head around, meeting his unreadable gaze.
A chill ran down my spine. I gave a hollow laugh, having no intention of submitting to Quinn's interrogation.
I shot Clarissa a cold look and said, "Miss Terell, are you done? If so, I'll leave you two to catch up."
Without waiting for a reply, I walked briskly upstairs.
Behind me, the living room fell silent. Once I reached the bedroom and shut the door, I felt utterly repulsed as if I had swallowed something vile.
I didn't know what else Clarissa said to Quinn, and I couldn't be bothered. After taking a moment to calm myself, I suddenly realized my back was already damp with sweat.
I slipped into the bathroom and sank into the tub, letting the warm water wash over me.
The warm water gradually eased my frayed nerves when the bathroom door swung open from the outside suddenly.
