I couldn't help but worry—at this critical juncture, Shirley was under 24/7 media surveillance, with reporters tracking her every move.
She simply had neither the time nor the peace of mind to rest.
I kneeled down to Benedict's eye level and asked softly, "Do you miss Grandma, sweetheart?"
Benedict nodded. I smiled at him and said, "Be good at home, sweetheart. Mommy will go pick up Grandma so she can stay and stay with you for a few days, okay?"
"Yay!" Benedict cheered, jumping up and down with excitement.
Now that York was dating June, he rarely came home these days.
I couldn't rest easy leaving Shirley alone at the Smith family mansion, so I decided to drive over and bring her back myself.
Thirty minutes later, I sped into the Smith family's garage and, before the reporters could swarm in, rushed upstairs without pause.
Shirley was surprised to see me. "Natalia, why didn't you call ahead? With all those reporters outside right now—"
"Mom, that's exactly why I'm worried about leaving you alone with all those reporters outside," I cut in, making my intentions clear.
Hearing this, Shirley smiled and gently declined, "Natalia, don't worry about me. I'm perfectly fine on my own now. Do you remember what you told me the other day?"
"Huh?" I blinked, confused.
Shirley gently pulled me down to sit beside her on the couch, her gaze soft yet unwavering. She said firmly, "You're right, Natalia. I've done nothing wrong. For over twenty years, since the day I married Ben, I've never betrayed my family or my marriage. With a clear conscience, why should I hide from anyone?"
Shirley said with quiet defiance, "Those reporters camped outside just want to snap me at my lowest. Let them try! Let's see if they can really get a big scoop from me."
Shirley's optimism uplifted me. I finally let out a sigh of relief—she really wasn't just putting on a brave face.
"Benny misses you so much. Don't tell me you don't miss your grandson?" I teased with a playful smile.
"Of course I do! Once things settle down, bring Benedict over—I want to spend some real quality time with my grandson," Shirley said with a smile. Then she suddenly added, "York and June are coming home for dinner tonight. It's been so long since our whole family had a meal together."
Shirley sighed softly, then smiled and said, "Why don't you stay for dinner tonight?"
I agreed.
Thinking of York and June, I blurted out, "Their relationship really came out of the blue!"
Shirley smiled in agreement. "It was pretty sudden—I was just as surprised that York would reciprocate June's feelings. But at least it's a good thing; now I don't have to worry he'll end up a lifelong bachelor."
This was June's first visit as York's girlfriend for a family dinner. To show her sincerity, Shirley decided to cook personally.
That afternoon, I helped Shirley prepare dinner.
At exactly seven in the evening, York and June arrived home.
June, with her bubbly personality, was truly the life of the party. From the moment she walked through the door, she had Shirley grinning from ear to ear.
Completely unfiltered, June suddenly asked as we started dinner, "Where's Quinn?"
At June's words, Shirley's smile faltered for a split second.
Ben's case was still under trial. Unless he confessed to killing Mary, Quinn wouldn't be able to clear his name.
After a brief pause, I brushed it off and said, "Quinn's been swamped at the Madden Group lately."
June didn't mind at all. She nodded cheerfully, then grinned as she started serving food onto York's plate. "Come on, York, eat up! You're way too skinny!" she said.
York didn't acknowledge her, nor did he touch his food.
I suddenly felt a piercing gaze fixed on me. Looking up, my eyes locked with York's.
York's sharp gaze studied me intently before he said in a low, grave voice, "Maple Media is heading for rough waters ahead."
