The next morning, I dug out my long-forgotten business suit and strode confidently into Maple Media to start my new position.
York assigned me to oversee the film and television project between Maple Media and the Madden Group.
I'd previously overseen this project at Madden Group, so I already had some experience.
After reviewing the project documents, I saw that everything was progressing smoothly, and the project had already entered the principal photography phase.
The follow-up work was pretty straightforward—I just needed to drop by the set from time to time.
That afternoon, I headed to the film set for my first site visit—only to run into Raelynn there.
Raelynn spotted me and rushed over, her face lighting up with excitement. "Natalia! What brings you here?" she gasped.
After I told Raelynn about joining Maple Media, she clasped my hands, her eyes sparkling with excitement, and exclaimed, "That's wonderful! Now we can meet up for meals under the guise of work every now and then!"
"How's it going at Madden Group?" I asked with a smile.
I hadn't been in touch with her for a while since leaving the Madden Group.
"After you left, I was worried they'd parachute in some boss who'd be tough to deal with. But to my surprise, Mr. Madden actually put me in charge of the Starlight project—I'm pretty much my own boss now!" Raelynn bubbled over with excitement, then went on to share all the latest Madden Group gossip and bits of her daily life, just like old friends catching up.
We caught up like long-lost friends outside the film set, talking for over an hour without realizing how time flew.
"By the way, Natalia," Raelynn suddenly said, "Jess and I ran into Skylar last weekend while we were out shopping."
I'd almost forgotten about Skylar, this so-called "sister" of mine, if Raelynn hadn't suddenly mentioned her.
After Elijah signed the confession, he vanished without a trace. I thought he and his family had left Enschester long ago.
At Raelynn's mention of Skylar, a sudden unease gripped me for no apparent reason.
"Was she alone?" I asked instinctively.
Raelynn shook her head, frowning. "She was with some strange guy who gave off really bad vibes. At the time, I thought he looked familiar, but I just couldn't place where I'd seen him before. Natalia, it reminded me of how your family tried to set you up before. Just be extra careful these days, okay?"
Raelynn suspected that Skylar's sudden appearance was premeditated.
"I'm not sure either," I chuckled. "But relax, we live in a society with proper law and order."
As the words hung in the air, my phone rang—Robert's name flashing on the screen.
With the workday ending, I said goodbye to Raelynn and headed back to my car while answering the call.
"Hello, Mr. Taylor?"
"Hello, Ms. Hinton. This is Robert Taylor," he said in his usual serious, methodical tone over the phone. "There's new progress in Ben's case. As the whistleblower, I'm obligated to inform you."
My heart leapt, and I quickly asked, "Has he confessed?"
"Ben confessed without reservation to kidnapping your mother and to his involvement in Andrew's murder. However, he vehemently denies your earlier claim that he harmed your grandmother. Our investigation confirms Ben wasn't at Brandt Care Home on the day your grandmother suffered her heart attack," Robert said.
Ben still refused to admit he killed Mary.
But if it wasn't him, then who else could it be? Now that Aiden was like this, there was no one left to provide solid proof.
I was convinced that Ben was the murderer. But Robert said, "Ms. Hinton, Ben has passed our polygraph test. And based on my years of interrogation experience, since he's already confessed to other murders, there's no reason he'd specifically conceal what happened to your grandmother."
"But I'm absolutely certain Grandma heart attack was no accident!" I cried out in anguish.
Robert said solemnly, "Therefore, I've ordered a thorough suspect screening. I'll contact you as soon as we have any new findings."
