The car pulled into the driveway and stopped. As Quinn stepped out, he shot me a sharp look and demanded, "Since when did you get so close with York?"
In the dim yellow light, I couldn't quite see Quinn's face, but I could hear the sting in his gloomy voice—his words were laced with hostility.
I instantly realized—Quinn must have seen York's car leaving when he got back.
My heart felt as if it were being torn apart, blood boiling with rage as I fought to keep my anger in check. Fixing Quinn with a cold sneer, I spat, "Quinn, don't you feel any shame saying something like that?"
Quinn frowned in displeasure as he strode into the living room. "What's this about?" he said evenly. "Natalia, I don't want to fight. If you're upset about today, let me explain properly."
His attitude only made me angrier. I let out a cold snort and retorted, "Explain what? That you and Clarissa went to visit Julia, or are you just here to tell me to know my place and not disrupt your family reunion?"
Quinn stopped mid-step, turned with a look of utter bewilderment, and frowned at me. "Natalia," he demanded, "I honestly don't understand—what exactly has you so angry?"
"Because you weren't there!" I could no longer hold back and shouted angrily, my voice trembling with rage. "Because you weren't there, because you failed to fulfill your duty as a father, because you didn't protect Benedict in time!"
As the words left her lips, Quinn's face darkened instantly.
"What happened to Benedict?!" Quinn grabbed my arm urgently, demanding an answer.
I couldn't be bothered with him anymore. I shoved Quinn away sharply and said coldly, "Thankfully, York was here. Everything's fine now, so you can go ahead and carry on with your business."
I strode into the living room and went straight upstairs to Benedict's bedroom without looking back.
After everything that happened tonight, there's no way I can share a bed with Quinn.
Benedict stirred awake, mumbling sleepily, "Mommy..."
"Be a good boy, Benedict. Shall Mommy stay with you tonight?" I climbed into bed and gently pulled him into my arms.
Benedict shifted slightly in my arms, murmured a sleepy "mm-hmm," and drifted back to sleep.
Quinn stayed away that night, and I barely slept at all.
At the crack of dawn the next day, I was jolted awake by the commotion from outside the garden.
Benedict was still asleep. After getting up, I closed the door quietly behind me and told the nanny to let him sleep in.
"Ma'am, those troublemakers from yesterday are back again!" The nanny nodded teasingly, her voice bubbling with excitement. "They're making quite a scene outside right now—you've got to see this!"
I paused, thinking, 'Wait, is that guy in the floral shirt back again?'
But seeing that the nanny's expression held no trace of fear, I relaxed as well.
Outside the mansion's garden, a man and a woman were kneeling on the ground.
It was the same man in the gaudy floral shirt and the heavily made-up woman from yesterday.
When they saw me, terror twisted both their faces. The man in the floral shirt was the first to blurt out, his voice trembling, "Mrs. Madden! We were blind fools who didn't recognize your standing. We never should've offended you and sir Benedict. Please, have mercy—spare us this once!"
I frowned, still having no idea what was going on.
The moment he finished speaking, the man slapped the heavily made-up woman hard across the face.
The woman jolted, trembling as she raised her hand.
Gritting his teeth, the man barked at the woman, "Hurry up and hit me! What are you waiting for?"
Without hesitation, the woman swung hard and slapped the man across the face.
They began relentlessly slapping each other's faces, neither willing to stop.
