The night was deep when Quinn halted before me.
I looked up, the silvery moonlight barely illuminating the contours of Quinn's face.
'He still looked like that handsome boy I first met,' I thought as I gazed quietly at Quinn, his features gradually coming into focus.
We stood there, locked in each other's gaze.
For a moment, I hesitated, unsure what to say. I finally said quietly, "You're back."
Quinn's eyes were as deep as an unfathomable abyss.
Without a word, Quinn averted his gaze. Then, abruptly, he shrugged off his overcoat and casually draped it over my shoulders. His voice was icy. "It's cold. Don't catch a chill."
I stiffened. The wool overcoat warmed my body, yet I shivered.
After a brief pause, I mustered up the courage and asked him, "How's Clarissa doing? If it's okay, I'd like to go with you to the hospital tomorrow to visit her."
'Judging by his reaction, Clarissa must be doing fine now,' I thought.
'Guilt gnawed at me. I knew I owed Quinn an apology,' I thought.
Just as I was about to speak, Quinn abruptly changed the subject, his tone detached. "I admit I didn't think things through before. Now that 'Starry River' has wrapped filming, there's no need for you and Clarissa to see each other again."
My heart wrenched painfully as I stared at Quinn in disbelief. "What exactly do you mean by that, Quinn?"
Quinn fixed his gaze on me, his voice low and steady. "Natalia, Clarissa has had a tragic past—she's been through enough as it is. She's never hurt anyone or done anything wrong. I hope you won't hold any unjustified resentment against her."
Every word he said struck like a dagger, pushing me over the edge.
My heart turned to ashes as my vision blurred. I bit down hard on my lip, refusing to let the tears fall. "Don't you dare cry in front of him, Natalia," I told myself.
"I'll never let him see me cry!" Natalia vowed fiercely.
"She's done nothing wrong, so in your eyes, it's all my fault?" Natalia sneered.
Quinn's brows furrowed, his face darkening dangerously.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop a few more degrees. Quinn interrogated me coldly, "You were the one who attacked her over Julia's imprisonment. You knew she had a heart condition, yet you still made her drink. Natalia, when did you become so hostile?"
The more Quinn spoke, the harsher his words became. My heart sank to the bottom, but instead of getting angry, I let out a bitter laugh. "I've never changed, Quinn. Or is this your first day knowing me?" I shot back. "You're absolutely right—I did all those things. And that's not all! I forced you to marry me, forced you to divorce me, and even forced you to have Benedict with me!"
My voice rose with each word as I pointed toward the door and lashed out at Quinn, "If you want to protect your precious little bunny, you'd better stick to her like glue. Otherwise, the next time I see her, I'll show you what real malice looks like!"
Blood rushed to my head, my ears ringing so loudly I could barely hear myself—I didn't even know what I was saying anymore.
Natalia's outburst clearly enraged Quinn, freezing the maids in mid-task as they tidied the living room.
Natalia flung Quinn's overcoat to the floor, stormed upstairs, and barricaded herself in the bedroom.
The next morning, when I woke up, the house was empty—Quinn was already gone.
'Out of sight, out of mind,' I thought. Without hesitation, I called the nanny and instructed, "Please help pack up Benedict's things."
Before Shirley left for Sea City, she had mentioned wanting to take Benedict to her place for a few days after she got back.
Now that Shirley was back in Enschester and I had no desire to see Quinn, it was the perfect excuse to take Benedict and stay at my mom's place for a while.
