I froze, then remembered I'd messaged York on WhatsApp yesterday—I'd meant to tell him about my suspicions of June.
Just as Quinn returned, I was halfway through editing my message and, caught off guard, accidentally hit send without realizing it.
I instinctively checked my phone, only to realize that the message I'd sent him last night read: "Are you free now?"
York replied, "What is it?"
My head was pounding after arguing with Quinn. Back in my bedroom, I didn't bother checking WhatsApp.
Then York sent me two more "??" in a row.
"With June right there, of course I couldn't tell the truth."
I forced an awkward smile at York and said, "Just some work stuff I need to run by you—nothing urgent. Let's eat first, okay?"
York didn't press further.
Shirley ushered everyone to their seats before a lavish spread of dishes. In the past, June would have been chattering away throughout the meal.
But today, she was uncharacteristically quiet, clearly distracted as her gaze wandered aimlessly over the bowl in front of her.
"June, not enjoying the food today?" I asked with a teasing smile.
"What?!" June was so startled that her hand jerked and her fork nearly slipped from her fingers. She looked up at me, and for a split second, I caught a flash of sheer despair in her eyes.
I froze—that was a look I'd never seen on her face before.
"June, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"Startled by June's reaction, Shirley immediately turned to York. "York, do you know what's happening with her?"
June quickly composed herself, forcing a stiff smile. "Shirley, I'm fine," she said. "Sorry, I guess I just haven't been sleeping well these past few days, so I zoned out for a moment."
"Don't overwork yourself, dear. Work matters, but your health comes first," Shirley said earnestly. Then she turned to York and added, "York, as June's boyfriend, you should take better care of her on a daily basis."
"Mom, I will," York replied, narrowing his long, almond-shaped eyes with a gentle smile. Then he turned to June, his voice softening, "If you're really tired, I can take you home early to rest later."
June looked up, gazing blankly at York for a few moments. Then she managed a small smile and nodded. "Alright," she murmured.
Watching June's odd reaction, I sensed that something was off.
Since June wasn't feeling well, we thought it best not to keep her any longer. After dinner, York drove her home.
After they started dating, York had moved in with June.
Regarding Mary's passing, it seems I'll have to wait for another opportunity—maybe reach out to York at work on Monday.
That night, after tucking Benedict in, I was just about to head into the bathroom for a shower when there was a sudden knock at the door.
I quickly pulled on my robe. "Who's there?" I called out while opening the bedroom door.
Seeing York, I couldn't hide my surprise. "You're back?"
He was supposed to be with June at the moment.
"Didn't you have something to tell me?" York's expression turned serious as he got straight to the point. "Or are we doing this standing at the doorway?"
York has always been able to read people like an open book—there's really no hiding anything from him.
I paused briefly before stepping aside to let him in.
He strode into my bedroom, his long legs covering the distance effortlessly.
I gently closed the door. Before I could say a word, York said solemnly, "Don't worry about having no options. Mom and I are here for you—this will always be your home."
My heart skipped a beat. I stared at York, utterly confused. "York, what on earth are you talking about?"
"I know everything about the wrap party," York said, frowning with disdain. "Clarissa's scheme was so amateurish, yet Quinn still took the bait. Natalia, bringing Benedict back to the Smith family was absolutely the right move."
Aside from the film crew, attendees at the wrap party also included staff from Madden Group and Maple Media.
It wasn't hard for York to find out what had happened that day.
'What surprised me was that, after finding out, York didn't mock me like he usually would,' I thought.
It sounded like he genuinely regarded me as his real sister.
'Is that why, after dropping June off, he came all the way back just to see me?' I wondered.
A mix of gratitude and suspicion swirled in Natalia's heart. Instinctively, she frowned slightly and said calmly, "I'm an adult—I can handle my own affairs."
After saying that, I realized my tone might have been too harsh, so I quickly added, "Anyway, thanks for your concern, York."
York stood by the balcony, the night sky hanging low outside. His tall silhouette was reflected in the glass; his expression remained serious and focused, yet no matter how hard he tried to hide it, I could see the concern in his eyes as he looked at me.
For a fleeting moment, I suddenly understood why June had fallen so hard for him.
Like Quinn, York was a wealthy, good-looking heir. But while Quinn was always stone-faced, York had a certain genuineness that made him seem much more approachable.
June was an actress who had portrayed a wide range of characters.
Perhaps it was precisely this sense of authenticity in York that made June fall head over heels for him.
"About that WhatsApp message you sent me yesterday..." York suddenly spoke up.
I snapped out of my wandering thoughts and quickly clarified, "Oh, it's about something else."
"What is it?" York asked, as if relieved, letting out a quiet sigh as he settled into a chair on the balcony, waiting for my response.
I hesitated for a moment, then decided to relay Robert's exact words to him.
"Did you know June called Mary for two minutes on the day she passed away?" I said, meeting York's gaze directly.
York's dark eyes narrowed sharply in disbelief. "She never mentioned that to me," he said, his voice tinged with shock.
I pressed my lips together. No more words were needed—York clearly understood what I meant.
"We can't be completely certain yet," I said carefully, "but since June is your girlfriend, after all, I think you have the right to know."
I couldn't help but recall Robert's speculation. June never had any issues with Mary. Even if she was the one who told Mary about Ben's affair, I honestly don't think she meant any harm.
But Mary's passing has always been a lingering regret I can't let go of, and I simply can't bring myself to forgive or move on.
York fell silent for a long moment before asking in a low voice, "If it's confirmed, will you tell Mom?"
I nodded without hesitation. "If that's really the case, Mom deserves to know the truth. You and she still suspect that Quinn indirectly caused Mary's death, don't you?"
"Natalia, so Quinn will always be your only priority, is that it?"
York took a deep breath, his voice icy. "Fine, go ahead and tell Mom. Let her know the real culprit behind late Mary's fatal heart attack. Now that she's finally managed to move past Grandma's death, you want to drag her back into that abyss of pain and make her resent everyone around her all over again. Natalia, for Quinn, you're willing to sacrifice anything—even Mom's peace of mind!"
