York's words stunned me momentarily. "I've never thought it this way..." I instinctively retorted.
York smiled, utterly disappointed, stood up, and headed for the door. "I'll find a way to uncover the truth you want. Natalia. Just think how good Mom has been to you, and who the real culprit behind Grandma's death is," he said.
The bedroom door swung open and closed, and in the blink of an eye, York was gone.
I stood frozen for a moment, then sank heavily onto the bed. York's voice kept echoing in my mind, filling me with both grievance and guilt.
I knew Shirley had been treating me well, and precisely because of that, I wanted to do everything I could to care for her so that she could spend the rest of her life happy and at peace.
However, York's words woke me up. The one who told Grandma the truth was not the one responsible for her death. The real culprit was Ben, and he had already received the punishment he deserved.
All my conflicting thoughts would be a burden for both Shirley and me. Perhaps York was right. The lingering guilt in my heart was just about clearing Quinn's name.
My phone rang, and the ringing jolted me out of my thoughts. Looking down, I saw Quinn's name flashing on the screen. I hesitated briefly before I answered the call.
"I'm available tomorrow," Quinn said in his deep, magnetic voice. "I can come pick you and Benedict up."
He must have heard from the housekeeper after returning home that I had come back to the Smith family. That was why he called to test the waters with me.
With a heavy heart and no intention of arguing with him, I replied calmly, "My mom misses Benedict. We plan to stay for a few more days."
On the other end of the line, Quinn fell silent for a moment before asking, "How long do you plan to stay? Just let me know, and I'll clear my schedule to come pick you and Benedict up."
"No need," I replied. I had wanted to tell him to focus on taking care of Clarissa. However, words stuck in my throat, and I said, "It's getting late now. You should get some rest, too." I then hung up on him.
The following day, I went to the mall with Shirley and took the opportunity to do Christmas Shopping. As Christmas was approaching, festive decorations filled the streets. Shirley held a red scarf, measuring it against my neck.
The sales assistant praised enthusiastically, "Madam, this young lady has a flawless complexion. Red really brings out her glow and makes her look even more radiant."
Shirley smiled, wrapping the scarf around my neck, and asked, "Do you like this color? If you do, I'll get it for you as a Christmas gift."
I looked at myself in the mirror. My gray coat and black dress did look a bit too plain. This red scarf was just the vibrant touch I needed. I must say Shirley really had great taste.
I smiled and said gently, "Yes, I love it. Thank you, Mom."
"Natalia," a voice suddenly sounded from behind me.
I turned around and was stunned to see a face I never expected. It was Skylar. Her long black hair looked dry and unkempt, and she wore a wine-red overcoat with quite a few lint balls.
"Skylar? What are you doing here?" I blurted out.
After saying that, I instinctively furrowed my brows, remembering what Raelynn had told me about running into Skylar Hinton on the street.
"Seeing how happy you are, Dad can probably rest easy now," Skylar said, looking at me meaningfully for a moment. She then suddenly sighed and explained, "Don't be nervous. I came back to Enschester this time to bring Dad for medical treatment."
