After Elijah had signed the confession, he left Enschester and disappeared without a trace.
I still could not get over how Elijah had tried to kill me. I never wanted to see anyone from the Hinton family again for the rest of my life.
My expression darkened at the sight of Skylar. Hearing that Elijah was ill, I froze.
At that moment, Shirley asked softly, "What's wrong with your father?"
"Stomach cancer, and he has to perform a total gastrectomy. I heard there's a renowned surgeon in Enschester, so I sold off all our family assets and brought him back," Skylar said.
As she said that, she glanced at me with a sigh. "While Dad was in critical condition and unconscious, he kept calling your name. He said he made many mistakes in his life, but the one he regretted most was hurting you."
I frowned at her, surprised by what she said, but I felt no sympathy. The terrifying scene of how Elijah once schemed against me still lingered in my mind.
"I see. Well, I wish your father a successful surgery then," I said casually, holding Shirley's arms and walking away. "Mom, let's check out some other shops."
"Natalia!" Skylar suddenly called out loud behind me.
I stopped and turned back, with impatience written on my face. "What is it now, Ms. Hinton?" I asked.
Skylar looked embarrassed, biting her lip before she finally spoke. "If you can, could I ask you to visit Dad at the hospital before his surgery? It might be your last chance to see him in this life."
Hearing her words, I shivered involuntarily. I scoffed coldly and said without hesitation, "The moment he raised that knife against me was the last time I'd see him in this life."
Elijah had already severed all ties with me by raising that knife. Skylar fell silent. Shirley took my hand and led me away from the scene.
She took me to a café and, after ordering two drinks, asked thoughtfully, "Natalia, judging from how Skylar dressed up, I don't think she was lying. Do you want me to contact the hospital to arrange medical assistance?"
I shook my head. Shirley, my mother, could sense the turmoil in my heart. Although I deeply hated the Hinton family, I could not help but feel a pang of sadness when I heard that Elijah did not have much time left.
Taking a sip of water, I looked up at Shirley and asked, "Mom, do you think I'm heartless?"
As I finished speaking, Shirley's warm hands gently but firmly cupped my face, drawing my gaze to meet hers.
Her gentle gaze filled me with strength. "My daughter is the kindest person in the world. As long as she doesn't regret it, I'll support every decision she makes," she said.
"Natalia, what's in the past should stay in the past. We may never be able to forgive many things in life, but we can learn to let go of them.
"This is your life; why let unhappy memories take up space in your mind?" Shirley's words struck me like a wake-up call.
I smiled and said, "Mom, I understand. I'll let go of the unhappy memories, and I don't regret my decision.
"The Hinton family has nothing to do with me anymore. I've already repaid what I owed them. So you really don't have to worry. Let's just enjoy our shopping spree this afternoon."
Shirley and I shopped until evening. With many shopping bags, Shirley and I drove back to the Smith residence.
Outside the Smith residence, two reporters stopped our car. As the window rolled down, a microphone was thrust toward Shirley.
The reporters excitedly asked, "Mrs. Smith, the trial for Mr. Smith's alleged kidnapping and attempted harm is the day after tomorrow. Will you testify against your husband in court?
"And regarding the shift in your relationship from love to hatred, do you have any details or stories you can share with us in advance?"
