The next moment, Ben stiffly turned around to face Shirley and me face-to-face. I had no idea what he was about to say, and instinctively furrowed my brows, ready to protect Shirley at any moment.
I gazed quietly at Ben. Our eyes met, and he froze for a moment before shifting his gaze to Shirley.
Ben locked his gaze on Shirley, his eyes softening with tenderness in the past. In a low, solemn voice, he said, "Shirley, I'm sorry." Shirley pressed her lips and remained silent.
Ben then turned to me and said, "Natalia, I've failed you as a father. From now on, take good care of your mother. You're the only one she loves the most in this world."
A wave of disgust washed over me. I looked at Ben and said coldly, "Save your concern. From now on, we'll never face any danger."
"Ben, you bastard! You lied to me! You said you'd stopped loving Shirley long ago!" Bernie suddenly shrieked hysterically. "It's all your fault! You've ruined my life!"
Bernie let out a heart-wrenching howl, thrashing wildly as she tried to lunge at Ben. The police held her back and led the group of convicts away. What awaited them was long imprisonment and regret.
I supported Shirley as we left the courthouse, her steps heavy and her face deathly pale.
I was worried about her. "Mom, are you okay?" I asked.
She lowered her gaze and did not say a word. Then, tears welled up and rolled down her cheeks.
Shirley began to cry, and I was startled. I quickly took out a tissue to wipe her tears. "Mom, everything will pass. You told me that we should forget unhappy memories!"
Just as I finished speaking, she suddenly laughed through her tears and said with a bitter smile, "He said the person I love the most in this world is you, but I did love him.
"He was just too consumed by his inferiority to believe it. How ridiculous; he actually thought he couldn't compare to a dead man!"
"Mom..."I was stunned. Was this Shirley's heartfelt confession? She had once loved Ben, but Ben's love for her was filled with insecurity as he could not bring himself to believe in her love.
Perhaps deep down in Ben, Shirley had married him because her first love abandoned her, and she had no choice.
This deeply rooted belief led him to view his love as unworthy while he harbored deep feelings for Shirley. Ultimately, this emotional turmoil drove Ben to betray Shirley and their family
"Mom, who's the dead person you were talking about just now?" I came back to my senses and asked, my voice laced with confusion.
Shirley wiped away her tears, composed herself, and said softly to me, "He was my first love that I told you about. He died in a car accident in the second year of our marriage."
An SUV pulled up by the curb. As promised, York had come to pick us up and take us home.
"Mom, what's the matter?" York instinctively asked when he noticed the tear stains on Shirley's face.
I shot York a warning glance, telling him not to press further. Then I quickly changed the subject. "Mom's been up since early this morning, and she's exhausted. Let's head home so she can get some rest," I said.
York started the car, and soon we were back at the Smith family residence.
In the garage, just as I was about to get out of the car to walk Shirley upstairs, York called out to me, "Natalia, Maple Media has a last-minute meeting. I need you to come with me."
I froze for a moment. Shirley patted my hand and said gently, "Go ahead, don't worry about me. I'll be fine after some rest."
I could only nod as Shirley entered the elevator. Then I turned to York, frowned, and asked, "What meeting does Maple Media have at such a critical moment? Mom's upset, and you made up this excuse to keep me here. What on earth is so important?"
