Some time back, Benedict had spotted a puppy in our neighborhood. Ever since then, he had never stopped thinking about it and had been begging me repeatedly to let him have a puppy.
"Mr. Madden sure knows how to win people over," I said exasperatedly, rolling my eyes.
Just then, Shirley's gentle laughter drifted down the stairs. She had just woken from her nap and happened to catch the whole scene.
"Mom, did we wake you up?" I asked.
Shirley shook her head and hurried downstairs. She gave Benedict's cheek an affectionate pinch, then smiled at me and said, "Benedict is missing home. I've been playing with him so much lately. I need a good rest."
"Mom..." I knew what she meant. She was trying to persuade me to go home with Quinn. Mom gave me a meaningful look, signaling me to stay silent. I got the message and let her handle it.
Then she turned to Quinn and asked with a meaningful look, "Quinn, is Benedict important to you?"
Without hesitation, Quinn nodded, his voice deep as he replied, "Benedict is a priceless treasure to me."
"Natalia is also my priceless treasure," Shirley said with a gentle smile. "Now that I'm entrusting her to you, Quinn, you have two treasures to protect. Please cherish them both."
My heart suddenly jolted, and a wave of soreness rushed to my nose. I stared at Shirley without blinking.
After a brief pause, Quinn strode to my side, grasped my hand, and, his deep voice softening, said, "Honey, let's go home."
It was the first time Quinn had ever taken the initiative to call me "honey." A slight tremor ran through me as I felt the warmth of his palm against mine.
He gazed deeply at me, his star-lit eyes holding a hypnotic charm. It was impossible to resist. Before I even realized what I was doing, I found myself getting into his car with Benedict in my arms.
As the car left the Smith family's garage, Benedict suddenly exclaimed excitedly, pointing out the window like he'd just discovered a whole new world, "Mommy, look!"
I followed the direction of his finger and only then realized that it was snowing. "It's the first snow of the winter," I said, a bit excited as I watched the flakes swirling down.
It had been two years since it last snowed in Enchester. The white snowflakes mingled with the glow of the red streetlights, and suddenly, it felt as if Christmas was just around the corner.
It was Benedict's first time seeing snow, and he was overjoyed. I patiently explained what snow was to him and even pulled up some online photos to show him.
Benedict pointed at the snowman in the picture and exclaimed excitedly, "Mommy! Daddy! I want this!"
"You want to build a snowman?" Quinn's lips curved into a smile as he readily agreed, "Sure! We'll make one in the yard when we get home!"
On the way home, the snowfall grew increasingly heavier. By the time we reached home, a thick layer of snow had blanketed the villa's yard.
Bundled up from head to toe, Benedict began building a snowman with Quinn by his side. Before long, the father and son had built a snow puppy.
Quinn patted Benedict on the shoulder, signaling the nanny to continue playing with him. He then strode over to where I sat, watching them quietly from a distance.
"Are you feeling cold?" Quinn gently took my hand, cradling it in his warm palm to check my temperature.
I shook my head, though truthfully, I wanted to talk to him. However, I had always been strong-willed by nature. Even after all this time, I still could not forgo what had been weighing on my heart.
I pursed my lips, lowered my eyes, and said calmly, "If you're feeling cold, you can go inside the house."
"Julia will be released from prison after Christmas," Quinn said abruptly. "When that happens, I plan to send her and her daughter to settle abroad."
