I was stunned, overwhelmed by an unspeakable sense of grievance.
Quinn had reserved all his attention caring for the Terell family's mother and daughter, meticulously arranging everything for them, from securing medical treatment abroad initially to now helping them settle overseas for good.
To Quinn, only the Terell family's mother and daughter were his true family. As for me, I was merely his wife in name and Benedict's mother, nothing more.
"That's fine. Go ahead to arrange it; there's no need to tell me," I replied coolly, masking all emotions.
I tried to withdraw my hand, but he refused to let go. Instead, he tightened his grip. I looked up in confusion, meeting Quinn's profound gaze. In a low, steady voice, he murmured, "From now on, I won't see Clarissa and her mother again."
I wondered if he was making a promise to me. My eyes widened in shock. "Why...?" I asked, completely baffled.
I had thought, just as York had said, that Quinn would forever wander between Clarissa and me. "This is all I can do. I've repaid my debt of gratitude to Julia," Quinn said.
Then, staring at me with sincerity, he continued, "But more importantly, you, me, and Benedict, we're a perfect family now."
My heart lurched as if something struck me. I stared at him in a daze, and tears welled up in my eyes. A voice deep down kept warning me, "Don't be easily swayed by his words." But as I met Quinn's deep brown eyes, I helplessly fell for him.
I told myself that it was merely two more months. Once Julia was released, she would take Clarissa with her to settle down abroad.
After waiting a whole decade for Quinn, what was the big deal with another two months? After numerous rounds of self-reassurance, I chose to trust Quinn.
I got up and rested my head on Quinn's shoulder, watching Benedict, who was still engrossed in building a snowman nearby. With a smile, I said, "It's been years since I last made a snowman. Would you like to join me?"
"Sure," Quinn nodded and responded.
I tugged Quinn along to join Benedict. After admiring the puppy-shaped snowman Benedict had built, I decided to make a kitty right beside it. We kept at it until the early hours, and by then, everyone was utterly exhausted.
After washing up, I rested my head in Quinn's arms and soon fell asleep, feeling safe and content in his embrace.
That night, I dreamed I was trapped on an isolated island, with not a soul in sight. I screamed out for Quinn and Benedict desperately, but no one answered.
In the middle of the night, huddling in the woods, I heard footsteps approaching. The next moment, to my horror, I saw Clarissa's sinister face.
She was holding a lifeless Benedict in her arms, and her body gradually became transparent. "Benedict!" I screamed, opened my eyes, and realized I was lying in bed.
My scream startled Quinn awake. Instinctively, he pulled me into his arms, holding me tight. He turned on the bedside lamp and consoled me, "What's the matter? Did you have a nightmare?"
Still shaken by the nightmare, I wanted to speak, but my throat was parched. The words came out sounding hoarse and ragged as I said, "I dreamed Benedict was gone."
Recalling that nightmare, my temples throbbed painfully, and my head spun with dizziness. Quinn's brow furrowed as he reached out to feel my forehead.
"You're having a fever!" Quinn exclaimed, immediately jumping out of bed to grab the thermometer.
I wanted to get up, but my body was heavy, forcing me to stay in bed. I was thinking I must have caught a chill when building snowmen last night. I should have bundled up better.
When Quinn finally found the thermometer and took my temperature, his frown deepened with worry.
