Quinn hastily put on his coat and bolted out the door. Moments later, I heard the engine start in the courtyard below. With a smile, I gazed out the window as a wave of warmth washed over me.
Out of nowhere, George suddenly asked me, "Are you happy now?"
His voice snapped me out of my thoughts. At first, I could not understand why he asked me this.
After a long pause, I smiled faintly and countered, "Dr. Johnson, do you have a girlfriend?"
"No," he responded, looking at me meaningfully. "Quinn does care about you, but his affection for you can never compare to what he feels for Clarissa."
I was stunned for a moment as memories of the past came flooding back. Suddenly, everything made sense. I looked at Dr. Johnson and asked, "So this is why you sent Quinn away, so that you could say this to me?"
I had always respected George since the day we met. He was a brilliant doctor with a gentle personality. Even if we could not be friends, I never thought we would end up as enemies.
It was not until the day Clarissa had a heart attack, and I saw how tenderly George cared for her at the hospital, that I finally realized I had been far too naive.
When a man loved a woman, he was not only willing to risk his life for her, but he might even be willing to become a pawn in her game.
I sneered and said, "Or did Clarissa make you say all this to me?" Was this yet another of Clarissa's dirty little tricks?
George narrowed his eyes and said firmly, "Clarissa isn't the despicable person you're making her out to be. She's never used anyone.
"Even back then, she could have played on Quinn's guilt and married him to become Mrs. Madden, but she didn't. It's because she never has feelings for Quinn, which just proves how kind-hearted she truly is."
I knew about Quinn and Clarissa's past. From how he described her, it was clear that he felt both admiration and guilt for her. He genuinely wanted to take care of the mother and daughter. Unlike Diana, Clarissa was nearly perfect in Quinn's eyes.
George was not exaggerating. There was a time when Clarissa could have become Mrs. Madden. However, she gave up on that chance. According to George, it was because she never loved Quinn.
In that case, I truly could not understand Clarissa's motive for making things difficult for me ever since she came back.
Utterly perplexed, I frowned at George and asked, "So, what's your purpose in telling me all this?"
He glanced at me, then quickly looked away and murmured, "Nothing. I just feel sorry for you, that's all.
Clarissa doesn't love Quinn, but it doesn't mean he doesn't have feelings for her. Although you're his wife, he's always torn between you and Clarissa.
"I know you're a strong-willed woman, so I'm curious. How does it feel to sleep beside your husband every night, knowing his heart belongs to someone else?' George said with stiff sarcasm.
He was trying to drive a wedge between Quinn and me. Hearing that, I burst into laughter, which triggered a coughing fit.
George looked up in shock, his expression somewhere between displeasure and panic. "What are you laughing at? Everything I said was true!" he said. He was a good doctor, but unfortunately, not a good actor.
"The truth is, you really like Clarissa but don't dare to go after her," I said bluntly, staring straight into his eyes as I exposed him without mercy. "Dr. Johnson, I finally believe Clarissa didn't send you here."
