Although Quinn and I were married, we managed our work separately. He left the house earlier than I did this morning. I assumed he must have gotten busy with some work and had yet to arrive.
Looking around, I asked Raelynn, "Is the entire film crew here?"
With less than half an hour to go before the press conference commenced, knowing how crucial this event was for Maple Media's future, I earnestly prayed that nothing would go wrong.
Raelynn said, "I think everyone should be here now. I just had my assistant cross-check the list, but it's strange about Miss Vance. I heard she had arrived early this morning, yet we couldn't reach her till now."
My heart skipped a beat. June had just broken up with York, and I could not imagine her condition now.
Raelynn's phone rang. Her assistant was calling to inform her that Quinn had arrived and asked her to meet him at the entrance.
After Raelynn left, I thought it over and was about to call York to give him a heads-up that we still could not reach June. Before I could connect with York, I caught a glimpse of somebody from the corner of my eye.
A tall woman, bundled up in a black puffer jacket, swiftly slipped out of the corner and headed straight for the dressing room. I recognized her; it was June. My instinct told me that her outfit was weird.
As soon as I hung up, I immediately went after June, wanting to make sure she was alright.
Just as I was about to knock on the dressing room door, York's voice drifted out from inside, "What are you doing here?" York's tone was icy to the bone, his voice completely devoid of warmth.
I froze; only then did I realize the door was slightly ajar. Then, June's voice, choked with tears, sounded, "I don't understand. Why are you doing this, York? You've always been so kind-hearted."
York sneered and said, "I gave you a chance to be with me. You were the one who chose to walk away."
"York, I did this because..."
June had wanted to say something, but York cut her off coldly, "Save your explanations. You only need to know this. You betrayed me, and I would never forgive betrayers."
I stood outside the door listening to them and was confused. Their argument still seemed to be about Mary. It looked like Juna was trying to win back York, but he was cold and unyielding.
"Enough. The press conference is starting soon. Let's see if you can act like the award-winning actress you're supposed to be," York said with sarcasm.
Just then, my phone rang, and the voices inside the room instantly fell silent. Startled, I quickly clamped my hand over the phone and hurried away.
It was Quinn who called. "Where are you?" Quinn asked gently.
"I'm at the press conference. What's up?" I asked.
"Come to the refreshment area," Quinn said. As I was unsure what Quinn wanted, I hurried over anyway.
In the refreshment area, Quinn was sitting at the bar, waving me over. He pointed at the food on the bar counter and said, "Eat this."
When I looked closer, it was an exquisitely crafted white cake, paired with a glass of fresh juice.
I froze for a second before asking, "What's this?"
"Pastry, with some nourishing traditional medicine added. I had them specially prepared just for you," Quinn said proudly.
I was speechless. I had only heard of afternoon tea, not morning tea. Moreover, I was not that weak that I needed round-the-clock nourishment.
Seeing me not moving, Quinn took matters into his own hands and asked, "Do you want me to feed you?"
"I'll do it myself," I said, picking up the glass of juice and downing it in one gulp. Just then, I caught sight of Clarissa approaching us out of the corner of my eye.
