In the police station, Clarissa sat curled up in a chair in the waiting room, her thin frame huddled like a frightened kitten.
She was wearing only a thin white sweater. Even though the police station was well-heated, she still looked so cold and pitiful.
The police officer led us into the waiting room and said softly to her, "Miss Terell, your friends are here."
Clarissa jerked her head up, hearing that. When she saw Quinn, she scrambled to her feet and stumbled toward him.
"Quinn, I'm so scared!" Clarissa threw herself into Quinn's arms, her body trembling uncontrollably, her face filled with fear.
She said, "Mom's not here, Diana's not here, and even you are gone. For a moment, I thought I was going to die."
For that brief moment, Clarissa and Quinn looked every bit like a couple. I, standing aside, was like a stranger.
The officer looked at me curiously, as if trying to figure out the relationship among the three of us.
Seeing Clarissa acting all pitiful, like a helpless little bunny, I could not help but feel somewhat irritated. In my understanding and from Quinn's description, Clarissa was never the timid type.
For a moment, I could not tell if she was genuinely terrified or just putting on an act before me. Quinn gently patted her back and softly eased her away. He then took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders, enveloping her.
The next moment, he deliberately stepped back, carefully maintaining a distance from Clarissa, and said softly, "It's all over now."
Quinn's actions brought me a sense of relief. Snapping out of my thoughts, I turned to the officer beside me and asked, "Sir, my friend seems shaken up. Could you tell us what happened?"
"During Christmas, every household is gathered in reunion, and the people wandering the streets are a mixed crowd. Miss Terell was taking a walk by the river at night when she ran into a drunk man.
"Fortunately, one of our patrolling officers nearby heard her crying for help and arrived just in time to rescue her," the officer said.
The drunkard had been arrested. Although Clarissa had gone out without her phone, she could still recite Quinn's phone number from memory. The police had no choice and contacted Quinn.
Clarissa was barely above a whisper as she explained, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause you any trouble. I just suddenly missed my mom, and it hurts that I still can't be with her. I thus went out for a walk because I was feeling upset..."
Clarissa sounded fragile, and as she spoke of her pain, her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
I had to hand it to her. With just a single sentence, she stirred up an endless stream of memories of the past in Quinn.
Quinn's expression softened as he looked at her. He sighed gently and reassured her, "Just hold on a little longer. Julia will be with you soon."
Clarissa nodded pitifully, her eyes welling up as she turned to me and murmured in a soft, trembling voice, "I'm sorry, Natalia..."
At that moment, I finally confirmed that she was putting on an act with me. Undeniably, when it came to scheming, Clarissa was on a completely different level from Diana.
After a brief pause, I smiled gently at Clarissa and said, "No need to apologize. Quinn and I both care about you. It's getting late; let's send you home."
We then left the police station. By the roadside, Clarissa reached out to open the car door when she was suddenly startled and cried out.
"What's wrong?" Quinn asked with concern.
Clarissa quickly hid her hand behind her back, making sure Quinn could not see it. Avoiding his gaze, she murmured, "Nothing."
