Instinctively, I thought she was going to hurt me. But to my shock, she suddenly lifted her long skirt and plunged the blade straight into her calf.
"What are you doing?" I cried out in terror. Bright red blood gushed out instantly, and Clarissa gave me a ghostly smile, then let out a piercing scream.
As I gazed at the old scar on Clarissa's calf, Quinn's story about how they first met suddenly flashed through my mind. That scar formed when Clarissa saved Quinn's life back then.
"What's going on? Open the door!" Quinn rushed over upon hearing the scream. Realizing the door was locked from inside, he clenched his fist and pounded heavily on the door.
I stood frozen by the door for a few seconds, then unlocked it.
"Clarissa!" Quinn instantly spotted Clarissa lying on the floor, blood gushing from her leg.
"Quinn..." I tried to explain, but he fixed his gaze on Clarissa. Quinn strode toward her. I pursed my lips, knowing Clarissa would pull her self-harm stunt to frame me.
"Quinn, my whole family has been nothing but a burden to you. I shouldn't even exist. I should never have come back to haunt your life like this..." Clarissa broke down, crying and clutching her hair in agony.
"Diana hurt Natalia in the past. It's my mother's and my fault for not raising her right. I know Natalia will never forgive us. Maybe my death is the only way to atone for this." Clarissa's voice grew increasingly hysterical.
I finally understood Wayne's fondness for her. It was such a waste that she did not enter the entertainment industry. She could easily win the Best Actress award.
"Why did you say that? I've never thought that way. You and Julia mean the world to me!" Quinn tried to comfort Clarissa as he scooped her up in his arms. Then, after giving me a deep look, he commanded in a low voice, "Drive us to the hospital!"
Clarissa was willing to stake her life against me, but I could not bring myself to risk what I had with Quinn. I thus could only play the obedient driver.
On the way to the hospital, Quinn sat in the back seat, cradling Clarissa in his arms. She had lost so much blood that she was on the verge of passing out.
I could hear Quinn calling Clarissa's name over and over, each stabbing through my heart like a knife.
At the hospital, the doctor bandaged her wound. Though she had lost a significant amount of blood, fortunately, the knife did not strike any major artery.
With Clarissa out of danger, Quinn finally heaved a sigh of relief. Clarissa was unconscious on the hospital bed and Quinn finally turned his attention to me.
"Natalia, what exactly happened after you two went into the bedroom?" Quinn frowned, his voice restrained as he asked. Then, as if trying to mask his concern, he added, "Did Clarissa say something inappropriate to you?"
I pursed my lips, staring at him in a daze, the warmth that initially filled my heart slowly faded.
After a long silence, I asked Quinn, "What if I told you this was all just an act she put on, would you believe me?"
He froze, his brows knitting and relaxing. Then, in the gentlest voice he could muster, he said, "I'll ask myself when she wakes up, and I'll get to the bottom of it."
My heart felt hollow, and I suddenly realized how pointless my question was. Whether Quinn believed me or not no longer mattered. His first reaction had revealed just how much Clarissa meant to him.
The doctor came in to explain the precautions, and Quinn listened attentively. I stared at his handsome profile as I slowly backed out of the hospital room, step by step.
