It was dawn when I drove back to the Smith family residence. Shirley was still awake, waiting anxiously for me in the living room, looking worried sick.
"Natalia, why did it take you so long? You didn't even answer your phone! Where's Quinn? Why didn't he come back with you?" Shirley asked, rising to greet me, her eyes searching the doorway.
I smiled faintly, composing myself. Before stepping in, I had already prepared my excuse. "Alex suddenly wasn't well, so I asked Quinn to stay and look after him. My phone died. Sorry for worrying you, Mom," I said.
I had to lie to Shirley so she would not worry. "Just as I thought, you went to see Alex," Shirley said, heaving a sigh of relief and patting my shoulder.
"Alright, you must be exhausted after a long day. Go back to your room and get some rest." I nodded with a smile.
After washing up and returning to my room, I lay in bed, but could not sleep. Whenever I closed my eyes, I could see Quinn's anxious expression as he held Clarissa in his arms.
Feeling restless and unsettled, I got up and drank some water, but the heaviness in my chest remained. In a daze, I went downstairs to the garden for some fresh air.
It was already late at night, with a bright moon hanging high in the sky, and all around was silent. I sat on the garden swing chair, and my thoughts began to drift again.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over me, and the next thing I knew, a warm blanket gently draped over my shoulders.
"Quinn...?" I froze. My first thought was that Quinn had returned. Before I could finish speaking, I jerked my head up, only to realize it was York.
York was wearing gray velvet pajamas, a brown blanket also draped over his shoulders. His long legs leaned casually against the apple tree as he cradled a glass of water in his hands.
"Care for some?" York handed the glass to me and asked.
Why was York still awake at this hour? Composing myself, I shook my head and said, "No, thank you."
He withdrew his hand, took a sip of the water, and raised an eyebrow at me. "Can't sleep either? How about we talk for a while?"
I was distracted, but it felt nice to have someone around on a lonely night. I nodded and said casually, "Mm, what do we talk about?"
York gazed at me intently, his expression growing much more serious as he softly asked, "Natalia, have you ever thought that you might fall in love with someone else?"
I never expected him to bring up such a topic. Dazed and caught off guard, I asked warily, "What do you mean?"
He sighed, his expression unreadable as he said, "I know you love Quinn. You're willing to give everything to him, even spend your whole life on him. But deep down, you know it's no longer just between the two of you.
"You know better than I do how much Clarissa means to him. Do you really believe Quinn can completely cut ties with her? You know what kind of person he is.
"Julia has done so much for him, and even if the mother and daughter leave Enschester, you can't guarantee they'll never be in contact again. Both Julia and Clarissa are in poor health. If something happens, do you think Quinn will turn his back on them?
"Natalia, Quinn's entanglement with the mother and daughter is never-ending. Even if he wants to treat you well and wants to be with you, can you tolerate their constant interference?
